tested this for 2 weeks and it is def. best dlp pj ive ever tried but still cannot beat good old 5050(or 6050), so back it went. call me spoiled but after spending almost a decade with fully powered/motorised lens (5030-5040-6040 and current 5050) where i dont have to touch projector at all for shifting-zooming or focusing, its hard to go back to manual lens like on this pj. But main reason for going back to 5050 after testing this,is still picture quality and inky blacks that even $10k Sony couldnt match

I know with my JVC the 2.4 gamma in a dark room is great for that detail and contrast.The blurays and 4k discs have little difference depending on your source.I am still using my dvda1ud for standard blurays with some nice projector settings dialled in, and the results are fantastic.The 2.4 gamma tended to dull the picture a little BUT my whites were not blown out and my 4k results were more realistic especially in darker rooms. Outside shots were not too bright and had plenty of detail.

Awaiting the 3550 arrival today. Should be way better than any fixed UST lens unit or any LED or LCD projector. Acquired mine Renewed/Refurbished/B-Stock …hoping it is set with factory calibration, as it was new and updated firmware.

Hey boys, what did you think of the black levels of the w5700, as well as the noise from the dynamic iris? I'm just about set on one now, but really do trust your honest Aussie opinions! 👍👍

Very good question. The black are great after calibration and can be enhanced using a good ALR screen. The best is to set the iris to medium if pumping effect or too much noise.

Some of the biggest problems with this unit are the lack of flexibility to install, black levels and no power zoom. I am sure it will be as sharp as a tack.

Hi. Thats interesting. We had these concerns but found the only lack to be power zoom. But we are anamorphic lens fans so thats not an issue for us. We hate throwing away pixels with power zoom. Black levels were surprisingly good. Side by side with a JVC it really surprised us.

Thanks for great technical review. Can you confirm that black levels and overall contrast on this projector are mutch better then on Epson 7100? I can't install UB5050 due to its enormous size, so I chose between these two. Thanks.

Gosh it was a long time ago that we did that review. I would suggest checking the specs on line in case there have been any model changes. I must admit I haven't heard reports of anyone who bought these suffering headaches but I guess some people are more prone to them than others.

What were the settings? And was it on cinema mode or d.cinema mode?
@HomeTheatreEngineering
@HomeTheatreEngineering 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ramon. As this was a REC 709 and also "out of the box" cal it was set to "Cinema" which is optimised for REC709. We don't publish settings as every room and screen is different so they are not valid for other users. This is especially applicable to projectors.

I'm considering upgrading to the BenQ W5700 soon and I was wondering what's the best screen material to get for this projector!!
@HomeTheatreEngineering
@HomeTheatreEngineering 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the delay. Its more about screen size don't go above about 110" screen. Then you will end up with a great image. we are fans of acoustically transparent screens but this will work well on any good quality screen with nominal gain of 1 or 1.2

Hi, recently I bought this projector. Please tell me how to calibrate this projector for colorgrading purpose. I want to calibrate for DCI-P3 output.
@HomeTheatreEngineering
@HomeTheatreEngineering 4 жыл бұрын
sudhir reddy Hi I am sorry but explaining how to perform a full studio grade calibration is outside of the scope of a KZfaq response. it’s not something that can be taught in a one line social media response., Also it’s unusual to be honest to colour grade in DCI-P3, most of the studios I have calibrated are still operating at REC709. Finally it would also be unusual to grade on a low light output projector especially in a color space generally though by no means exclusively related to HDR. I suggest you get a professional calibrator to assist you and for grading I would recommend something like a Flanders Scientific Monitor.
@ArcticPathway
@ArcticPathway 2 жыл бұрын
@@HomeTheatreEngineering DCI P3 required 48nit calibration and is not necessarily always HDR. This projector more than meets the needs of grading DCI P3. The biggest question is, does your calibration software talk directly to the project or are you using some sort of LUT box?
@ArcticPathway
@ArcticPathway 2 жыл бұрын
Flanders Scientific is great but display technology is coming a long way that those monitors will be absolute in the next 4 years. MiniLED is already applying pressure on the HDR front with Displays in the sub 5k market meeting and exceeding some of the offerings from those “high end” monitors. MicroLED will shut that door completely.
@HomeTheatreEngineering
@HomeTheatreEngineering 2 жыл бұрын
@@ArcticPathway Actually no this projector does not. While it’s a nice projector the primary and secondary luminance do not reach DCI-P3. Also while it does a great job with REC709 and by comparison with other cheap projectors a “nice job” of HDR I certainly wouldn’t grade on it. Also I haven’t done the math but you would need a very small screen to reach your 48 nits or even the 32 nits of Dolby cinema. Finally no it has no LUT capability so yes a LUT box would be required. I agree that the monitor situation for grading is fluid and that emerging technologies are changing the landscape but that has been going on a while. Do not fall into the trap of thinking because a manufacturer says “we achieve 100% of DCI” that in fact they can. They are referring to 2D CIE and are ignoring primary and secondary luminance - see my video on colour space. So I would absolutely disagree that you can grade HDR on this projector and I challenge anyone to produce an HDR profile (cube etc) of this projector that meets full DCI P3.

How do u justify hdr performance on this projector with just 1800 lumens. Looks like there is no head room to push hdr brightness.
@HomeTheatreEngineering

Really easily. What size and type of screen are you using? On a large screen then, no way on a sensible screen the performance is stunning

Im using a Sony vw520 with lumagen pro, will this projector be considered an upgrade?
@HomeTheatreEngineering

That would depend on the size of your screen, ambient light etc. But it could be. This is not a projector for large screens if you want at least decent HDR.

@@HomeTheatreEngineering thanks for the prompt reply! My screen is 125" 21:9 and I use the zoom method to get the black bars out. I'm happy overall with the image brightness and HDR but I'm looking for more sharpness and contrast. I'm just worried cause this projector price point is way less than the sony, so maybe there are other things I'm taking for granted, maybe like reality creation.

@@joseluispelaezlopez7862 My apologies it was 2am for me when I answered that. I was rushing a bit and thought you were asking about x12000H. On the W5700 the intakes are along the left side and the exhaust is toward the front on the RHS. The vents at the front are just decorative. On the X12000H the front vents are exhausts :-)

@@HomeTheatreEngineeringI have always thought that it is not good to prioritize aesthetics before functionality. The design of the ventilation in the W5700 is mediocre and poorly studied, unnecessarily increasing the noise and the width of the projector case. Disappointing. The JVC NZ3 with laser system and similar design seems to have done better.

In honesty we only care about quality of image which is the job of the projector. Reliability, support. Many of our projectors are hidden anyway and most people face the screen and not the projector. Function over form is our priority..image quality is everything for us.

@HomeTheatreEngineering

Hi Rami I do believe the 5550 is more refined. But I think the honest answer is to go to a retailer and compare the two side by side to work out where to spend your $s. As yet we have not had a chance to compare the 2. Hope this helps.. a bit.
