Portland, Oregon is home to a hidden gem: The Benson Hotel. Created by Simon Benson to help put the city he loved on the map, this hotel was certainly a game changer, in more ways than one.
SPECIAL THANKS to the Hilton staff of the Benson Hotel for being so kind, courteous, and knowledgeable about their beloved hotel. They allowed my friend and me to film the beautiful lobby and shared a printout of historic information on the hotel and of Simon Benson, which helped significantly in the research of this video. THANK YOU BENSON HOTEL!

Yes this video is a re-upload. I added new pictures, new information, and enhanced the narration, also fixing errors with the original version. Enjoy!

Yes, the Benson.....elegance like a grand ocean liner. In a way a small version of the Plaza in NYC or the Drake in Chicago. I first stayed at the Benson in 1974 with my parents as they were coming up to plan their grand home in the Portland area. My room was a "Pilot room" normally used by air crews laying over. it was very small but cozy. My parents had a corner suite. And 10 years later my wife who was pregnant with our first son, and I (and chihuahua), stayed for 5 days when we were waiting on our furniture moving up from Laguna Beach. At that time it was operated by Westin. Lovely place. The Benson Grille was a great dining venue; and high tea was served in the lobby. Also at that time there was a Trader Vic's restaurant on site as well. (Western International Hotels, which became Westin) had quite a few Trader Vic's restaurants in their hotels

This is where we moved when we left Souther California in 1979. This was a nice surprise. The Benson and the Benson Bubblers are so iconic. We’ve stayed at The Benson once several years ago, we won a room on their social media. It was amazing! My husband works for the school district and does a lot of work on Benson High School. His grandfather also went to school there but didn’t graduate because of the war, but later in his 80’s my husband was able to get him his diploma from Benson!!

Great video, Alex! I now know the importance to the people back in the day for the water fountains, and historic places that Simon Benson either built, or donated. Very informing!

Wow! Great video! We just stayed at the Benson last month! The pictures don’t do it justice- it’s incredibly grand and beautiful. Each night I got a glass of wine at the bar and sat in the lobby soaking in the ambiance. We explored the stairwell where they have a photographic museum of the hotel’s history. A must see. Too bad downtown is so over run with homeless right now- did not feel very safe

He used much of the timber flosting techniques and equipment as back here.but with differences. Timbe floating were used here in some places until early 00s, and much better than the trucking the timber.

Those fountains do not have enough water pressure
@AlextheHistorian
@AlextheHistorian Жыл бұрын
They were running at low pressure that day because it was early in the morning, and this was filmed during the strict Covid restrictions, so there were no people on the streets using the fountains. So instead of wasting water, they lowered the pressure in the morning and evening hours.

@@AlextheHistorianI was living on the streets of Portland during COVID and a lot of the bubblers were completely off. As I have found in the 10 years I've been in Portland the bubbler in front of the Benson is the only one that is almost always on. As an implant from Florida, Thank You for the historical information about my new hometown. It has amazed me some of the history of Portland that I have learned since I have been here. Some of which I can't believe they don't teach in schools around the country. Thank You and best wishes

Ah I wondered if it was a reupload as the subtitles don't match in places. That's a very beautiful building and I'm sure very iconic to the city, but buying potable water infrastructure for the people is something really special. Beyond living comfortably money won't buy happiness, and this man did the moral thing with at least a good chunk of his money and bought happiness for other people. Very few rich people do that. What would you do with that kind of money?

Wait the subtitles don't match? I put those subtitles in this morning.
@SAOS451316

@@AlextheHistorian They match the general timing and meaning but not always word for word. I especially noticed this in the outro but I'll watch it again and note the instances. I do appreciate proper subtitles even if they aren't perfect. Most people don't bother with accessibility.

The outro was intentional. Some of my videos contain secret messages in the outro

Okay I rewatched it and I must have just misheard some things you said the first time because I only found one error apart from the outro -which must be from the old version- which you just explained while I was typing. Where you said he renamed the hotel to the Benson Hotel the subtitles read "and named it" while you say "naming it". It's really not a big deal in this case but I always notice it. The worst offender I've seen is Netflix, where nothing matches and everything is abridged or restated, not to mention the dreaded "(Speaking Foreign Language)" lol. Thank you again for them. I know transcription is a lot of work.

Well the way I do it is I write a script for the video, then I record narration. Sometimes I misread what I wrote. Then before I publish the video, I copy and paste the script into my subtitles, that way if I get something wrong, like stating Queen Mary was built with 1 million rivets, when she was actually built with 10 million, then at least the subtitles will have the correct information. And then of course, my outros contain secret messages for my audience who reads them.

This video is about the visionary Simon Benson, who lived over a century ago. It has nothing to do with current events, and I'm not sure why you would attribute it as such.
