DJBelbe, so TRUE!!! We bought Twinkle (a silver dapple Paso Fino x Sheltland on April 3, 2012. The kids are longeing her now and my son is riding her to get her broken in. She comes running to the gate when we come out to train. She is jealous when the other ponies are in the round pen with the kids. She loves attention. If horses know you care about them and enjoy spending time with them, they love their work.

They seek safety, companionship and praise. And the horses we have today have been bred for centuries to work hard and regularly in their respective disciplines. This is not to say that every horse out of a dressage line likes dressage. But if you take a confident horse out of work, you'll notice that they get bored. So I'm pretty sure that there are a couple of people out there who do it a good job. Only because it's not necessary doesn't automatically make it wrong.

@ktyfiend Danish Knabstrups: 15.2-16 hands (there can be ponies-sized ones) Appaloosas: 13-15 hands Appaloosas come from America and Danish Knabstrups from Denmark. Appaloosa bloodlines can be found sometimes, because a bit back 3 Appaloosa Stallions were brought to Denmark and bred with a lot of Knabstrup mares.

they look very much like leopard appaloosas but you can see the difference in the arch of the neck length of the legs and thickness of the head (or at least i can.) appaloosas tend to be stocky horses with thick necks yet light heads where as the knabstrup is leggy and easily poised with a only fair neck with a soft arch and a well built head.

@SirenaXVI This kind of work is very difficult physically and mentally for the horses. So indeed doing it for hours does bear its strain on them, I just hope they are treated well on the side as well.

i think you missed part of the video he does not MAKE his horses preform. he asks them after explaining to them, in a way they understand, what he wants. i do not deny he is a master at training horses but he understands his horse and tries to be one with it, not to control it.

In the US, the pencil neck is favored. It is considered "correct" and all the riders with a horse of any breed that has a good stout neck with a high crest must hang heads in shame (kidding!). I like a high crest, good muscle through to the back and shoulders like these Knabstruppers. I think it helps a horse balance, especially when they engage the rear to the degree the horses in these videos engage. I have still so much to learn and life is so short. I want that motion studies DVD soon.

AJ, the first horse is doing pirouettes at the canter. Because it is so collected, and also incorporates a turn, the three-beat gait gets changed so as to allow the movement. His canter out of the collected motions looks very even and balanced.

Horses naturally seek guiding in order to be safe from preditors. If you give him this guidance and treat him in a way that he can understand and is willing to follow, I don't see an ultimate con against the practice of riding as such. Plus, if you are capable through reading, investigation and experience to shape him through your riding in a way that enables him to carry you without either mental or physical damage, it is enjoyable for the horse, too.

@14imke 1)Haha 2)I believe what he is doing is considered 'classical' dressage as opposed to 'modern' dressage but I could be wrong(if anyone can clarify please do).Regardless of the difference this man demonstrates what I could only call ''respectful dominance'' and uses the bit as a mere accent to weight aids.It appears that his mounts are comfortable with him and anky could learn some things from him.

chewing actually means submissions/comfort. You always want your horse quietly chewing. It means they are keeping their mouth gentle and open to aid and guidance and listening to the handler. If you ever challenge a horse for space, like in their stall, and they give in... they will move away and start lightly chewing. Sort of showing your respect.

@bomberdils I'm sorry but horses can't really be free anymore even if we wanted them to. Mankind has taken land there is not enough space for horses to be left to their own devices and constantly breed. You don't really see behind the scenes how much the horses are pampered and made a fuss of and they love it! Horses have been ridden since the beggining of time, it was a mode of transport. now it is a passion/hobby for people like me.

@Bigstallion099 I also ride bareback on a plain leather halter and think dressage quite useful. If for nothing else, my stallion gets bored extremely easy if i don't come up with new things to teach him all the time and dressage aids (because he already knows the movements as you say) are as good as any other. Plus, him having become so light and flexible also comes extremely handy in traffic on narrow trails or to avoid accidents in dangerous ones. etc. a super responsive horse is always handy.

This is collection :D

it´s a knabstrupper originally it was a spanish breed but now it´s a color the difference to a appaloosa lay in the DNA and you actually can see it appaloosas have smaller spots somtimes with painted parts and knabstrupper have bigger and evenly spreaded spots and the biggest opposite knabstrupper only have spots nothing else.

If you really want to communicate with your horse as you say, start giving him a normal bite. It´s actually far more difficult for the rider, but such an expert rider like you.. won´t have problems with it... or?
@StephanieHill12 жыл бұрын
@DayUnfamiliar the four-beat-canter is loss of rhythm, if unintended and apparant in the stiff horse, not working through the body. If the four-beat-canter is the result of high collection, it is natural, because hindquarters that take more weight, obviously spend longer on the ground than the forehand, which gets lighter in collection. A four-beat-canter on the forehand with low shoulders and whithers, in turn, is a mistake and result of incorrect riding.

@80RDC not really, we haven't bred wilderness out of the horses, it's our lack of understanding for their needs that makes them weak and appear as though they would not survive in the wild. However, there IS NO wild anymore. every land is owned and horses left to breed unchecked then have to be gathered and often put down wich is horrid. it'd be much wiser to simply change the way we keep them to mimic their needs more closely. (track system paddocks, etc.)

I sure hope that was a typo, because Le pitet does not mean little in French and that would be unfortunate if that is her official name. Pitet isn't even a word, and by putting 'le' in front of it, you are essentially calling her 'the little'. Petite is the word you are looking for.

Dear Kathyt140... I have already stood corrected on this matter several times, including by someone I know personally, a horsewoman I know and trust. I just don't think my lack of knowledge should invite character assassination from a stranger. I have spent my life standing in opposition to ALL abuse, owned and rehabilitated many abused animals including two horses who I brought back to trusting human contact. Wish I could take back my statement here, but there's no way I can see to do that.

@bomberdils It seems a little pragmatic but if it wasn't for riding, the horse would have been extinct long time ago because it simply isn't necessary any longer. For me, riding is a matter of responsibility and obviously, none of use are unfailable. I just wonder why you rule out the point of connection and friendship between horse and man. Obviously, many riders seem to rule it out, too but that is rather a matter of attitude than the practice of riding itself.

that's a very harsh bit that he is yanking on
@ericafane92379 жыл бұрын
ANY bit can be harsh, the harshness of a bit depends on the harshness of the hands using it. Just because those are leverage bits with shanks does not mean that they are causing the horses extreme discomfort. A well trained horse even with what seems like a "harsh bit", works off very little pressure. Some all you need is barely touch a rein to get a response. Many of the bits that look harsh to an uneducated bystander are actually very mild when used properly by an educated rider with soft hands. A snaffle in the hands of someone who does not know how it works in a horse's mouth can cause serious injury to the animal. Which is why it's important to know exactly what the action of any bit you use is. Brent is barely in those horses mouths, their mouths are not gaping open to avoid bit pressure and many times you can see the reins go slack. There is no yanking or cranking going on in this video.
@fortheloveofhorses59569 жыл бұрын
***** Its long shanked but he's not yanking on it. Personally I like that he's not using a double bridle. Not saying they are bad, but a lot of riders seem to forget how to ride without one.
@DJBelbe8 жыл бұрын
+kitty meowmeow number one, there's no "yanking" going on. Simply because he trains his horses to high level on a cavesson before ever introducing a bit, so the horse is already light and balanced before he gets anything in his mouth: no need for yanking. Second, when riding long reined or with a contact that is no more than the "rein';s weight on your hands" (Anja Beran), long shank is kinder than short shank. Simple phisics dictates that a long shank has to rotate much further before there is any action on the curb chain than a short shank; as a result, the horse gets plenty of time to react before the bit exerts any pressure. Short shanks will simply punish the horse at every small rein action. They don't allow for cue aids. that said, if you do ride with constant contact then yes, that would be a very harsh bit. I actually would like to see curbs forbidden from being used at all for constant contact. Even the mini shanked ones hurt like hell on heavy hands. People just don't notice cos the horse soon grows numb and can ignore it.
@StephanieHill12 жыл бұрын
I get where you're coming from but Branderup is the wrong address for your arguments. He does outspokenly NOT show his horses on shows and competitions because he considers this industry corrupt and horse-unfriendly. His system is based on logical steps that the horse can understand and a lot of praise. When I was a kid, I didn't wanna go to school but some teachers made learning a nice thing. The same way, it depends on the person whether the horse enjoys being ridden or not.

Fisher Queen I spent my summers in college working as an assistant trainer and farm manager at a dressage farm, our third level lesson horse was completely blind, had no affect on her gaits, neither did her age, as she was 22. As to "broken legs"...if the breaks were something so easily shrugged off as splints, slab fractures or even broken sesamoids, they shouldn't affect the horses gait, I work with thoroughbred broodmares now, more than a few of them have suffered such injuries. I have an 18 year old currently with legs that bow horribly, a combination of being born windswept and a pasture accident that fractured her cannon bone, sesamoid and hock. She is worse to turn out than our two year olds, spinning and leaping when let loose and her canter is still a completely recognizable three beat gait.
@JC_horsetraining9 жыл бұрын
aj gensel no, ignorant people like YOU give dressage a bad name. Bent is one of the masters that all dressage riders should be studying. Like Sarah said "the first horse is doing pirouettes at the canter. Because it is so collected, and also incorporates a turn, the three-beat gait gets changed so as to allow the movement. His canter out of the collected motions looks very even and balanced.". Please do not go around bashing a way of riding that is centuries old and that you obviously know nothing about
@DJBelbe12 жыл бұрын
what freedom? there's barely any room left! and horses find absolutely no interest in being dumped in a field with a few buds. Offer them the choice to go exploring the trails with you or to jump or to do gymkhana or race their buddies (wichever the horse happens to enjoy) and see if they won't come runing to the gate the moment they see you holding the halter. If you learn to make the "riding" experience as fun to them as it is to you, they will preffer it to the pitiful "freedom" we can offer.

A bit like this with hands like feathers is much better than someone uneducated using a snaffle bit. I’ve seen countless examples of horses tongues being ruined and even cut in half with the use of the snaffle. This horse is in shape and given obvious attention to his health.
