The dangerous world of the Stuntman in the Silent era, where instant death was a reality, and falls were paid at so many dollars a foot. Those interviewed include stunt experts Harvey Parry, Yakima Canutt, and Paul Malvern, and directors Al Rogell, and Allan Dwan who remembers directing the very athletic Douglas Fairbanks.
Silent films are often remembered for slapstick gags and dangerous stunts. Stuntmen took anonymous credit for very little pay and could not reveal their involvement. Stuntmen Yakima Canutt, Harvey Parry, Bob Rose and Paul Melvern tell hair-raising stories and reveal secrets behind many famous stunts.

Over a half-century ago when I was in high school, I saw Harold Lloyd and Gaylord Carter perform at our school assembly. This movie with the great clock scene was one Mr. Lloyd discussed and showed a clip of. It was such a thrill to see him in person. This was just before he passed away.

I love this series that cover every aspect of early film making. Having these "unknowns" archived is invaluable. Thank you for posting this series!

Harvey Parry worked into his 80's. You can see him dive in and out of a couple windows when Taggart and his men attack Rockridge in Blazing Saddles. He stands up, and you can see his face before he runs off.

Of the 13 episodes in this series, this is by far my favorite. The thrill, happiness, and tragedy of silent film stuntmen is perfectly captured and detailed in this episode. Fantastic!

You could see that same stunt by Yakima Canutt in Raiders of the Lost Ark with a car instead of a horse!

Priceless Masterpiece is more thanJust a word for it! Suicidal {If you don't have any Bloody Idea about what you are doing, or, to do it right- in which case you should just leave it to the Professionals, anyway) as well But, they knew the risks that they were taking, Most of them Survived & lived to tell the tale, But one as is seen in this Episode, Did not, & his story is well Documented, here.

Harvey Parry may have stunted for HL on "Feet First" the sound version of the climb but multiple printed reports say Bill Strother, who played opposite Harold in "Safety Last", as the human fly who was chased by the cop (forcing Harold to climb instead) did all the long camera shots on the building. Not Parry in that film. Also Parry dismissively says Lloyd's hand injury resulted from a mere "firecracker" when in fact a real bomb which was thought to be a prop exploded in Harold's hand blowing away 2 fingers and much of the the palm of his right hand, and temporarily blinding him. In another part of this fine documentary Parry expresses deep admiration for Buster Keaton but silence for Harold Lloyd. Draw your own conclusions.
