That was pure mastery! I discovered both these guys no more than maybe 2 years ago and they remain 2 of my favorite sax players in the world. Their tones are so similar it's so cool. The entire end section had to be one of the coolest things ever! Not to overshadow the rest of it, but you know what I'm saying.

I really love this Standards-with-Friends series, Ben, a great introduction to a lot of (for me 😬) not so known yet brilliant musicians.

That's funny how they seem to represent both a different direction: Melissa sounds like she's turned toward the low keys, with a very deep and smooth sound, thick, while Ben's sound is more on the opposite side, bright, less fat, high.

to everyone saying Bens overall tone is more powerful... I couldnt disagree more Melissas dynamics appear softer yes but her lines are just as deliberate, her flurries are more honest, and I feel like her swagg is more artsy than Ben forreal forreal U R still amazing Ben luv u xoxo

Kev Smith also she’s farther away from the mic.. not sure if that actually makes a difference or not tho but

I mean dynamics don't really determine whether a tone is "powerful" more or less its about the core of it.

They seem to have heard Joe Henderson's version, especially Melissa breaking out the trills on the melody just like Joe. Cool performance, congrats.

I can see why multiple tenors or other wind instruments usually play jazz with a rhythm section. Extremely talented players, but the piece seemed to lack a rhythmic foundation in places. At the beginning, I felt that I would have enjoyed the 2 solos if they had been played separately.

It seems to be a relatively new thing for wind players to play duet without use of any rhythm section. Give it a few more listens from a few different players - you might start to dig it a little more ;)

I'm a big fan of both. But this kind of seems like they just got together and started playing, knowing the song without really knowing what they were going to do or discussing it. I guess there's a lot lost without a bass or piano or drummer. Kneebody is wicked, Melissa's Trio is great. I didn't like this. They could have talked it over and practiced it a few times before recording it. It sounds like 2 of the great tenor players in the world spending less than half an hour putting out a youtube video.

I think respectfully maybe you totally missed the point of this series. This is a jam, man, and a standard. Precisely just knowing the tune and play. They don't need to pre-set any arrangements cause, i can assure you, when they are playing they are listening every note, rhythm and little nuance the ohter is playing, and respond accordingly, with the only goal of create beuty and have fun. it is impromptu colective improvisation. A lot of times is precisely in this kind of "casual" "relaxed" enviroment when the magic arises. Of course, if also the listener knows the tune in advance so he can plays it "in his head", this helps a lot. Cheers
