Beretta's First Frame Safety Double Action: The 92 GTS "Twin Sear"

At Beretta Range Day at SHOT Show 2024, @Hoplopfheil checked out the new Beretta 92XI GTS "Twin Safety," which adds double action capability back to the 92XI pistol. The frame mounted safety lever previously limited the 92XI to single action only configuration, but Beretta's new design splits the sear in two, and allows the best of both worlds; the crisp single action trigger of the 92XI, with a decocker to allow safe carry in double action mode.

Just for reference, the Model 92 started life with a frame mounted safety. It was sold to many country's militaries with a frame mounted safety and grip mounted magazine release.. It was introduced in 1976 as a DA/SA double stack with a frame mounted safety and a grip mounted magazine release. The safety was moved to the slide in 1983 in response to many police agency requests and the gun was called the Model 92S. The Model 92SB was introduced to compete in the trials for the new US service handgun. The "SB" model moved the magazine release to the base of the trigger guard (1911 style). Some final modifications resulted in the "Final" version to be submitted for the US trials and that model was called the 92SB-F. When adopted as the M9, Beretta changed the name of the civilian version to the "Model 92F" When the military desired a change to prevent cracked slides from being ejected into the shooter's face, it resulted in the military Model M9A1 and the civilian version was called the Model 92FS. The RETURN of the frame mounted safety (which was always the way the Taurus Model 92 was offered) is to meet a demand for that feature, mostly buy competition shooters. It's not "new"...it's old.
@neutronalchemist3241
@neutronalchemist3241 6 ай бұрын
Just a correction. The modification of the slide and hammer's hub that prevent a cracked slide to be ejected from the gun was retroactively implemented on the M9. The M9A1, adopted by USMC, introduced the picatinny rail, and all the modifications that, in the years, Beretta made to the civilian model (improved locking block, different sights...) but could not implement on the Army M9, because they would have been out of the original specs.

UNFORTUNATELY, the frame mounted decocker is NOT a safety…
@garyK.45ACP
@garyK.45ACP Ай бұрын
@@user-qv1kt8ug4t Why is that unfortunate? There is no need (or desire) for a manual safety on DA semi auto. All of the DA/SA and DAO hammer fired semi-autos I carry have NO safety, they have ONLY a decocker. DAO hammer fired (which I prefer) have no decocker either. The hammer is ALWAYS "un-cocked" and every shot is DA. DA hammer fired handguns need no safety. The long, heavy DA trigger IS the safety.
@user-qv1kt8ug4t
@user-qv1kt8ug4t Ай бұрын
@@garyK.45ACP I do agree, but the ability to carry cocked and locked is an appeal for many who do not trust the trigger alone.

@@user-qv1kt8ug4t You mean to say there are people who don't trust a DA trigger pull for safety? Do you know any of these people? Have you ever actually met one of these people? Do they look for DA revolvers with a manual safety? It makes no sense and would seem to indicate a mental deficiency.

@neutronalchemist3241
@neutronalchemist3241 6 ай бұрын
@@paleoph6168 Beretta used frame mounted safety on the first 92, and then on all the SAO models. The slide mounted was introduced with, and FOR the decocker, because frame mounted decockers decock only to the half cock, while the slide mounted one, rotating the firing pin out of the way of the hammer, can decock all the way, and that was considered safer for a service weapon.

I can't believe Beretta gave the GTS an oversized decocker and extended mag release but didn't give it an oversized disassembly lever like the Squalo has. Why do companies do this? So frustrating. One of the biggest problems with the 92 has always been that you can't get good purchase with your support thumb. The Squalo disassembly lever solves that problem acting as a "gas pedal."

0:54 Does the Taurus PT92 series also use this "twin sear" setup? Taurus inherited Beretta's original design of frame-mounted safety, meaning no decocker. But later they added a third stop on the safety lever so the PT92 could have decocking capability. I never heard Taurus brag about something called "twin sear" so, just wondering :)
@neutronalchemist3241
@neutronalchemist3241 6 ай бұрын
Yes. The Taurus PT92 simply copied, and put on the 92 series, the safety/decocker Beretta introduced on the 80 series. It decocks to half/cock. Almost all the frame mounted decockers decock to half cock (SIG, HK...). There is only one exception I'm aware of. The Bernardelli P018 / P-One. The P018 however doesn't slam the hammer on the firing pin, relying only on the block to not make the gun go off. It would be mental. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hc6Ugqed1JvSf4U.html As you can see, the decocker decocks to ALMOST full down, not enough to hit the firing pin, and then, when the lever is released, the hammer is placed in full rest. The last movement is so slow to not be dangerous for the firing pin block, and to not be powerful enough to make the primer go off even if, for some reason, the firing pin block doesn't work.

The fact that no one appreciates the quality of Beretta handguns still blows my mind. I've literally had people tell me about a Glock feels just as good as a Beretta 92 series and I couldn't help but literally laugh out loud. It's like comparing a Honda Civic to a Lamborghini. Never in my life have I ever felt a more quality firearm than a Beretta 92 series. I've touched expensive 2011's and I wasn't impressed but I'll admit the CZ Shadow series are a close 2nd in terms of quality and feel, IMO. I wouldn't be angry if you put the Shadows above the 92's on your list though. Don't compare mass production quality guns with these precisely built metal framed guns though. That's offensive to me.

Do the barrels break at 20k rounds like the 92x?

Probably not an issue since most people won't come close to 25% of that.

The guy that had the 92X PERFORMANCE that was breaking barrels is a grandmaster competition shooter who under-sprung his guns. Don’t mess with the factory springs and you won’t have that problem. Of course you probably won’t shoot 1,000 rounds through a pistol never mind 20k rounds so it’s irrelevant
