Even with a carefully designed aircraft taking on tons of water whilst skimming the surface takes a certain nerve and steadiness of hand. Plus you have to watch out for boats jet skis bird s and other aircraft.😬😎 Then theres the problems of fighting a fire in hills and mountains. For big aircraft they get thrown around a lot at displays you can see them take off and then climb out almost vertically. 😳 having swoop dumped their water load. 😎

a very tense situation - you need to keep the plane in a position where water is pouring into it. Imagine that you are holding an empty barrel while riding a bicycle and pouring water into it while moving, you fend off all possible forces that act on you.

Absolutely. Especially when one considers that when the water is being loaded, it has to be distributed so that there is no appreciable pitch change caused by a change in center of gravity. Quite an achievement.

@@thomasschafer7268 I have just read a comment about center of gravity change because of a rapid load. So the pilots have to be trained accordingly. I didn't know until today. So, there are huge efforts taken by the pilot behind "not landing just taking water" thing

There's a video of a tour flight on a Super Widgeon where the pilot notes a few times that there's no warnings for too low over terrain or wheels up while approaching.

This beriev also has more range. More suited for russian territory. Small European countries prefer the smaller Canadairs . But politics also affect the decisions.

Canadair has more maneuver ability and you need a plane that flies at low speed so it can cam less than 30 miters above the ground when beriev can make a drop at 50 meters. That's why canadair is the best way to put out a fire

I think the US have special Jumbos for that purpose. Big fires demand huge planes, not toys…

The US has actually ordered 4 of these with an option of 6 more. The company that ordered them is Seaplane Global Air Services, which is a firefighting company.

@Azar Huseynli Personally I think this is a gold mine for Russia. I was shocked to find out only 17 of these were built in total. There was also the issue with the Ukraine conflict as they were supplying the engines for these. For this reason, the aircraft halted production for years, but now the issue has been resolved and manufacturing has continued, which is great news. The second issue is Russia's lack of Marketing skills, although this is changing fast. The third issue is ofcourse politics. The Canadair CL 415 is also a great aircraft but it is not a competitor to the BE200, they are complimentary to each other. Be200 faster and higher pay load, meanwhile CL415 more manuverable for those tight angles and locations. Both are beautiful and serve a great purpose.

Another point is that even over land, they're likely to find a water spot to make a recoverable emergency landing. In the event of a "ditching" on land, a seaplane is going to be far more forgiving and survivable than a land plane that needs a runway or else it fragments when the wheels collapse. See the '50s Chase / Stroukoff YC-134E. Upgraded C-123 with boundary layer control for STOL and strengthened sealed hull & tip floats & a set of semi retractable "pantobase" skis that substituted for a step or landing gear. It operated with skis from unimproved ground, snow/ice, water, swamp/mud, sand. A plane could reliably set down controllably on any reasonably flat spot of any type, and the people aboard could walk away or shelter inside, just about anywhere on the planet. It would cost payload, compared to a land plane that needs a runway, but it'd be designed to keep its people alive, instead of just cramming more people in. See also the Burnelli lifting fuselage, as in the CBY-3. A Burnelli twin crashed due to mechanical errors on a test flight. It hit the ground at 120kts, 30° nose down, 110° roll. The wings and tail turned to confetti and the engines broke off as it cartwheeled along. The lifting fuselage body came to rest upright, and when they broke the door open and got to them, the 2 crew walked away.
