During my freshman year at UC Berkeley, I set out to create the most ridiculously automated dorm room in the school ever. Three months and several hundred dollars later, BRAD has been completed!
Derek is an engineer and entrepreneur. He was named in Business Insider’s 9 Most Poachable College Students in Tech, and has been featured in TIME, Forbes, CNN, The Guardian and TechCrunch. Derek studied Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UC Berkeley. He knows how stupid writing a third-person bio of himself can be.

Imagine you think a guy is really cute and smart and he takes you back to his room and shows you all his cool gadgets and then all of the sudden he shouts “Brad, romantic mode” and then you hear the deafening mechanical screech of his blinds closing as he stares at you waiting for your reaction

Nothing puts a lady at ease like a gentleman telling a robot 'romantic mode', causing the lights to turn off, a giant disco ball to start flashing, and The Lion King soundtrack to start playing. "Um, excuse me, I just remembered I have an important exam in the morning..."

while this seems pretty standard today, three years ago home automation was in its infancy, furthermore it seems everything used is quite price sensitive as would be for a student. dope stuff.

Fine.. he's not rich, but he's very well off. He's graduated from Berkeley with some sort of engineer related degree. He's definitely at the VERY minimum making 6 figures, but most likely this guy is making around mid 6 figures.. Sorry, but that's a lot of money. Also he's won many awards for innovation and other things. I'm pretty damn sure that he's gotten offers from many large tech companies.

davidhg117 I guess it depends on where you're from and how you go about it when you're in school. I'm not an engineer unfortunately..compared to my cousin that graduated from Berkeley with a CS degree. I got mine in business. Took a lot longer and had to work a lot harder to find a job and even then I don't even make half the amount he makes -__-..

Dude thanks, CAL is a great school. I chose GA Tech over it due to personal reasons, but yea he obviously doesn't know how the things that happen at these schools. Even us geek's have to have fun now and then when we arnt preparing to make solid money

Incredible!!! My daughter hung a "clamp" study lamp to the exposed water pipe in her dorm at UNC Chapel Hill & earned her first violation. LOL. I'm very impressed to have witnessed a college student with more initiative than to just play online games & PS3. You're my new hero!

Your amtrak story led me here. I used a Pabst PBR neon light in my dorm window for party mode...it also served well for romantic mode and sleep mode.

John Muir did many of these same things in 1860. The difference is that he carved everything himself, including every part of the clocks that powered his "alarm clock bed" and his desk, which turned the pages of his books for him, and switched to a different book every half hour.

I LOVE this.... And for the people who's personal lives suck (inside and out) and have to be jerks... Aka madras crabs... You know? The ones that pull each other back down into the bucket, eliminating the need for a lid, because the moment one makes a break to rise up and out of the plastic holding container... Another one climbs on top of it and they both fall back into the bucket! To those individuals, I am declaring that I personally would be willing to make sure "alone" would never be a setting option!
