Berlin Flak Towers

On the night of the 25th of August 1940, British bombers attacked the city of Berlin for the first time. The targeting of Berlin was thought impossible. Hermann Goering promised Hitler his Luftwaffe would protect the German skies and if a single bomb fell on Berlin, he would change his name “Maier”.
In response Hitler order the creation of the Berlin Flak towers. A total of six Flak Towers were to be constructed but as the war dragged on and resources were needed elsewhere only three Flak Towers were constructed in Berlin. A grand total of eight Flak Towers would be built through the Reich, 3 in Berlin, 2 in Hamburg and 3 in Vienna.

As the 150th and 101st Soviet rifle divisions advanced across the Spree River, they faced fire from the Flak Tower located within the Berlin Zoo, the "Zoo Tower." Typically pointing towards the sky, the anti-aircraft guns, including four 12.8 cm "Flak 40" anti-aircraft guns, (together capable of firing 96 rounds per minute,) and a 20mm and two 37 mm anti-aircraft guns on each corner of the Tower as well, were all suddenly pointed down at the ground. But, the Zoo Tower, and its Berlin counterparts, the Humboldthain and Friedrichshain Towers, (all formidable defenses in and of themselves, and a death trap in combination with each other,) were hardly the only such surface level anti-aircraft defenses of that magnitude in the, "Motherland," at the time. Two more were constructed to protect the vital port of Hamburg, and three more in Vienna, Austria. Forming another defensive triangle to protect the city's center, like in Berlin. Because they were all built so well, almost all of them are still standing to this day, and the Towers in Berlin are arguably the least impressive to visit and explore, besides their interiors being either inaccessible completely or just largely off-limits to the public. (Except for Humboldthain lol of course. That place is still quite impressive, to say the least. 😇👍) I'm just sayin' 🤜 💥 🤛) #ConstructiveCriticism #DontShootTheMessenger 👍

I hate Nazis but need to say, Hitler never wanted to bomb London. It was the English that provoked Hitler into civilian targets. It saved the RAF, they were at their breaking point but Hitlers anger took over and the RAF had time to recover. Those guys were the Greatest
