A precise, acoustically clear performance of a piece of work which too often dissolves into a schmaltzfest. Nicely judged, beautifully performed! Kudos to conductor and performers.

Wonderful! Probably only Berlioz, with his mastery of orchestration, and flair for the dramatic, could have pulled this off without descending into bathos and schmaltz. O the bombast! O the Tragedy! O Mortal, attend! And he loves every moment of the pain. If you haven't already, try his 'Grande Messe Des Morts' -AKA 'Berlioz' Requiem'. In particular, the 'Dies Irae' and 'Tuba Mirum' sections. Cast of thousands, choir and orchestra! My favorite performance, available on You Tube, is by Charles Munch and the Boston symphony.

you're right but one must not forget that Berlioz Requiem has very soft and very quiet and peaceful pieces, specially a cappella; Hector has not only composed noisy stuff, he's THE post Révolution Romantic, he appreciated a lot poets

Trop rapide...pas assez tragique, pas assez dramatique.L'esprit français de l'époque romantique et post napoléonienne n'apparait pas.Dommage, cela aurait pu être beau.

+david wright , absolutely, this music is composer for ancient instruments,before the "revolution" of Adolphe Sax and his new cooper wind instruments, and Berlioz call for help the Bavarian horn players (then of passage in Paris), and all musicians reached 200 people during the ceremony, and 1800 the 24 july1846 at the great racecourse of Paris for a public concert. Berlioz Managed his music solemnly and with moderation.
