Bermuda Grass vs Zoysia: UP CLOSE & In The WRONG Climate

Bermudagrass and Zoysiagrass are two common warm season grass types that are very tolerant of hot weather and drought. Both have deep root systems and spread horizontally by both rhizomes and stolons but despite these similarities these two grass types are very different.
I live in solidly cool season grass territory. It's probably safe to say that these two grass pots are the only Zoysia or Bermuda grasses growing within a couple hundred miles of me due to our colder climate.
Warm season grasses aren't always grown from seed either but even still I managed to grow these grasses just for the purpose of learning, experimenting, and teaching.
I hope you appreciate the effort and I hope you learn something in this video.
For those that are curious the seeds I bought were picked up on Amazon. I bought based on package size; I wanted to buy the smallest packages possible and I ended up with Arden 15 Hybrid Bermuda and Empire Zoysia.

Very detailed guide to both of this grasses. I always thought that if I move back to South, i would go with bermuda but that zoysia is looking really tempting.

I have a patch of Zoysia in my front yard in Michigan. It was there when I moved in. Mostly yellow in the spring time coming out of winter but once summer hits, it does great and outshines the rest of the yard by being so heat and drought tolerant.

I have 22,000 ft of Bermuda that I sprigged, plugged over the last 4 years and now I just not liking it anymore. You got me motivated to do zoysia now. Great video and comparison!

Thanks a lot Randy, as I've said in a couple other comments I'd be all into the Zoysia too if I loved in a warmer climate. Nice sized yard btw, id love to have just a couple thousand more sqft but I wouldn't give up my mountainside view to get it, lol

We have Zoysia Zeon. The variety is not grown from seed thus, you can not reseed this variety. Zeon has a very narrow blade unlike the Zoysia the narrator is demonstrating. Zeon has a blade more like a pine needle but is wonderfully soft. The blades do stand. In my opinion it is the “bees knees”. 8 weeks ago,19th November, My wife and I scalped it to the ground then covered it with .5 inch Sydney washed sand. Today, the lawns have recovered 65-70%. That part of the lawn, nearest the house is lagging behind at about 40%. I have cut it at 1.5 inches. My goal is 0.75 inch.

We have what they told us is Empire Zoysia and it looks different than that. So now it makes me wonder what we actually have. What we have has runners and it constantly puts off seed heads, also doesn’t thatch or feel plush. We hate it. May have the entire yard responded with zoysia zenith.

Really when it comes to foot traffic, resistance to fungal diseases, growth rate and self-healing properties, no other grass (warm- and cool-season) comes as nearly close to most varieties of Bermudagrass. But truth be told Bermuda does so in a relatively short period of the year (on average 4 months or so) from the northern edge of USDA's zone 8 to colder places in the transition zone.

Out of my 45 mowing accounts back in OK I only had one Zoysia yard. Was SO nice to walk on and looked really good when mowed. Us poor guys all had Bermuda:) Probably scalped and bagged it a thousand times. You’d end up with 15 or 20 bags to haul off sometimes and the dust coming off of it would be in every hole in your head:)

If I lived in a Zoysia climate I feel like I would want it! I mow frequently but with Bermuda its a must, with zoysia it just looks tidy, I like it a lot so far.

@@TurfMechanic Seemed most people sodded it if they did it. Of course you really only sod Bermuda down there as well. Never heard of people growing either from seed much for an average sized yard. I thought about sodding Zoysia in a small part of my front yard that wasn’t shaded but didn’t seem worth the trouble since 80% of my front was shaded and I loved my tttf. Ideally I should have put it in the sunny back yard around the pool but it was a small space and my Bermuda was pretty thick and healthy anyway.

That's not Zoysia. Probably centipede, but I don't have centipede here to check that. The seller sent you the wrong seeds. definitely not Zoysia. You can even see in the video the vernation is folded..

Aw man.. you said you planted that “empire zoysia” by seed. I got so happy. I’ve been trying to find empire seed for years. As far as I know they only sell plugs and sod. Your Amazon link is for Emerald zoysia, not empire. If anyone knows where to find EMPIRE seed please let me know!

It’s a hybrid with basically non viable seeds. I don’t believe you will ever find it. Why this title confused me. I knew as soon as I saw the pot. Blades are too thin In my opinion

Which type of Zoysia is this? I bought two 8.5lb bags of Pennington Smart Seeds Bermuda for my Southern CA (zone 9b) with ongoing drought but changed my mind and I'm looking for a different warm-season grass and I'm seriously considering Zoysia. Any advice?

What are you thoughts on the RTF fescues? Granted they're slow but for us Northern lawn people MN here they seem to be a good alternative to clumping grasses.

I'm fond of the idea but I haven't seen them in action. My gut tells me they "could" be great but the thing is fescue seeds so easily that if I were paying for a premium seed I'd probably go with a fescue that had the attributes I cared most about (drought, heat, lots of rain, disease resistant, etc) then I'd continue spot seeding as needed. The rhizomatic spread (the way I understand it) is very slow, not fast enough for me to pay for it. My mind could be changed on this however as I learn more about it.

@@TurfMechanic I decided to go with Barenbrug Turf Star RPR perennial ryegrass. I plan on growing some as well in a planter like you did to watch how it progresses. I have a grow light setup. Should be fun!

Don't let that bermuda enter your lawn. It will take over and you will never be able to get rid of it.

@@TurfMechanic we need an update on this video, that Bermuda should be a monster by now. I still have hope that you throw them on top of your backyard hill and see if Darwin has a point.

@@michaelsteele5495 I kept it out on the patio in its pot until around mid October when it had gone fully dormant already. Since then I keep it inside in the south facing window and it's coming alive again, sunlight duration is low though so I haven't had to trim it since Sept. If I can keep it going until Feb then maybe sun duration will be long enough for it to start growing hard again. I've got some ideas of what to do with it but not 100% sure yet.

Do you have any plans to review the toro super recycler flex force since I know you use the recycler flex force and plus their super recycler is gas but they have a cordless one or the Ego Xp since it has more power then the last gen one or the greenworks 60v since it’s newer then the 80v or the 40v ryobi hp mower?

Currently I don't although I would like to. To be honest the return on investment in money and time to do those comparisons just isn't there. Nobody sends me the mowers for free so I have to buy them, I spent 4 grand last year on mowers and although it gave me a lot of good info it just hasn't seemed worth it...also only one year later and almost all of the mowers have new models out. Too hard to stay on top of it all. I will tell you though I want the Toro Recycler 60v commercial, the one with no personal pace - for the past 15 months I've tried my hardest to learn to like the personal pace system and I just don't like it at all. 😐

I would love to and plan on doing just that. Probably won't have anything to show for it for months though, maybe late October if I'm quick about it but maybe Nov or even next spring.

@@mattv5281 yeah, but it also naturally spans the Midwest up through to the northern plains so it should have decent cold tolerance too, I also understand it is very drought tolerant so I want to grow it and some new fescue in super deep pots or planters- couple feet deep if possible to see how roots dig down and the grass takes irregular low water.

I bought the smallest packet I could find, picked it up on Amazon, just an eighth of a pound, just enough to run some experiments in pots and possibly raised beds next year. I put the link in the description, not the best reviews but the grass looks great imo.

If you live along the I-5 corridor in Oregon or Washington - Oregon especially id say it's possible and I'd definitely try it. I live in Klamath Falls Oregon, east in the higher elevations and because of that I don't think it would work well here. If you tried it in the warmer lower elevations I would think it would do fine but your winter dormancy would start earlier than Perennial rye which is grown up here a lot and your spring Greenup would be later too. It's also going to perform better in the drier parts of the pnw, anywhere from Roseburg Oregon down to Ashland Oregon could probably pull it off just fine. I'm not as strong with my Washington or geography but there are probably some micro-climates in Washington, Idaho, and Northern Cali/Nevada that could pull it off too. PR does great with nearly daily water from pnw rains/drizzle, not sure how much Zoysia would tolerate that but it might since it can hold up to daily rain in Florida just fine. 🤔

I know this video is old, but I live in what you call a “micro climate” right where you are talking about. The tri cities. Bermuda CANT die here. Our temps and climate are super similar to Arizona or southern Utah or California. The house I bought in 2016 had really let their lawn go and wild Bermuda had invaded to the point that more than 70% of the lawn was compromised of it. I tried (minimally) to fight since then. This year I decided to finally go the other way and I EMBRACED it and instead I did my entire lawn care this year with the idea of catering to the Bermuda. And guess what? Greenest best lawn on the block. Been mowing it at 1.5 all season. No weeds. I know it’s “common” Bermuda but it looks phenomenal at least compared to every other lawn in the area that is trying to compete with weeds and multiple types. Will my neighbors get an extra month or so of green? Eh probably but they have dumped water on their lawn all summer long to keep it alive and I water once and week and it’s green and green can be. I’m half tempted to renovate and order some hybrid Bermuda which has higher cold tolerance and have even more green.
