Corsets are pretty comfortable as long as they fit. 90% of fit is knowing just where you want them laced to, to hold up the boobs but let everything else get on with the job.

It doesn't matter if he capitalizes it or not at least he's using words you toddler. If English isn't your main language, then dont try correct someone unless it's not something that varies and you know for sure that they're wrong. Something like... spelling YOU as U. Even a non native English speaker should know that. You use 'big words' like 'deliberate' but yet you cant be bothered to spell YOU. If your going to show something off it doesn't look as great with a failure behind it. Too bad your mom couldn't show off any of your siblings. Now, if you are going to take personal offence to this, you do that. This isn't personal, merely me getting all of my other anger out from today in one ball of energy directed at you to get you to spell YOU. It never occured to me that the Costume Industry didn't have a guild to represent them. This definitely has to change. These crafts-people and artists need protection in times like these. I hope that happens soon!

Also popped over post Morgan vlog, was so exited to see what all the amazing artisans have put together, some of the brief glimpses of costumes made me purrrrr. If they did tours of their workshops (payed obviously) when back up and running I would love to visit to understand the process a theatrical garment goes through as they were describing. What a master class that would be.

It's horrifyingly sad that artisans such as these incredibly talented people are left to fend for themselves in times like these. That said, this is a fantastic initiative and I will get that pattern for sure! Looks gorgeous and I will try to adapt it into a full-length winter coat!

But thinking about making one for next winter so it must be long. I had intended to follow the seams and then draw a straight line straight down. So at the moment it does not look so stupid, should just choose fabric, have too much.

I think it reflects a general political consensus that the arts are not important - either socially or economically - in the UK we had a political campaign which suggested a ballerina who cannot work due to covid should just retrain in cybernetics (really actually true!).

A couple of thoughts. First - this is amazing. Second - I firmly believe this will be a valuable historical look back in years to come at one of the many stories of how we were affected by this pandemic. I came for the costuming...I did not expect to be floored by the interviews. You are truly an advocate for some folks that I admit I've always taken for granted. Very well done. And you are coming into your own as a filmmaker - this is a masterpiece. Thank you for giving voice to this industry, and the people who bring these visions to life. Oh, and Third - that jacket is awesome :) It inspires me to tackle a project or two that I've been putting off. Home run...well done all the way around!

Bernadette, you hit the tone with the video so beautifully! The way you switch between the interviews, your "reconstruction" process, the sponsorship and the b-roll footage of the workshops is absolutely magnificent. The flow of the video is so professional; how you balance light humor with the heartbreaking existential threat of the interviewees. Simply amazing. You should be immensely proud of yourself; I know I am! I'm sure this video will have a huge impact on the funds that will be raised.

I’ll also be coming back again and again to watch- and I’ll even make sure never to skip an ad, if that helps even a little. I’m unfortunately too poor to buy the pattern or donate, but I can watch this video many times, and I can share it around so that hopefully many others will do the same. Honestly, the fact that the US government doesn’t have anything in place to keep shops and craftspeople and artisans open and ready to go again is just ridiculous and abhorrent. In Australia, we had the JobKeeper payment, which allowed people to stay employed, even if their employer wasn’t receiving enough business. And we also had a better response in general, which is why we have theatre open here. I could go to the theatre, or see the ballet (if I could afford it). Most countries have that or something similar in place, so that the US doesn’t is just atrocious, especially when you add in the fact that the response has been so terrible that the US is suffering from the virus more than any other country. Also, unionise! Unions are important, and not just so you have representation when it comes to the big stuff. Guilds are great too, for craftspeople and artisans. People power is the only way the little guy gets to have any say, any power, any stability. And it’s easy to see in the stats- as unionisation declined in the US, so too did wages and working conditions, in a perfectly correlated way. So unionise!

They need customers right? Not ALL of us history-bounding fans got stuck in lockdown - many essential jobs had overtime for months instead. CIC should put up prices for buying custom orders of this jacket. (and other costumes) They can't sell all that many, but how many people can afford it anyway?

Disgusting to see that there are always enough funds for endless wars, big corporate bail outs, and environmentally disastrous infrastructure projects, but when it comes to saving the working class, or small to medium sized businesses nothing can be done... Weeping in my living room because I'm a stitcher for a theater in Utah and this video gave me a little bit of hope and made me feel appreciated. Can't wait until I can go back to work, but will be watching this video on repeat until then.

As a worker of one of the CIC shops that works on this show in normal times...my heart hurts, I miss working in the shop and sewing beautiful things. Thank you for doing this, it makes me happy to see so much support.

Bernadette: Isn't tailoring just a beautiful craft? Me: chills. Um, I got very emotional watching this, and I am so far removed from the world of theater that I thought it strange that I would get tears in my eyes by the end of the video. But I am an artist, do lots of handwork in my non-costuming stitching, and I so admire the exquisite craftmanship of these dedicated artisans. Thank you, Bernadette, for bringing this to our attention and filming your video with such loving attention to story, light, and image. (Your antique machine bobbin made me swoon!) *sigh* I will gladly buy the pattern for the cause. Keep the arts alive!!!

I just graduated from an MFA program in costume construction this past May and let me tell you, nobody in my graduating class is having a good time right now. I've been selling masks for the past 7 months and hoping someday we can all go back to work! So weird to see my industry explained in a youtube video, but love the attention brought to the struggle of being a theatre artist right now! This jacket is so cute, I'm definitely adding it to my list of projects ❤️

Dearest Bernadette, Thank you so for such a wonderful video. I've worked in a Costume shop, here in NYC for about 5 years. The General public doesn't have a CLUE, of all the the talent, resources and Hard work that goes into making the costumes for a Show. Thank you for recognizing the drapers, stitchers, embroideries, Miliners, and everyone who works in the industry. We are the small "cogs" that keep the industry alive. I went with my choir right at the end of 2019 with the same expectation, but LOVED it! I just so happened to be obsessed with the 18th Century in general, so that helped. The whole performance was breathtaking (music and costumes).

well, i cried watching this video. i’m a theatre worker in toronto, so i, like a lot of the people in this video, have been unemployed/struggling since march. i’m very glad the CIC exists to help advocate for this incredibly important group of people in the theatre industry. (though i was interested to hear that most costume makers in new york aren’t unionized! in toronto they fall, as far as i’m aware, under one of our IATSE locals. i wonder why that’s not the case in nyc)

Design teams and wardrobe are part of IATSE, but the costume shops are independent businesses that aren't unionised. 😅

@@bernadettebanner ah, that makes sense!!! i'm not nearly as involved with the scale of shows that would require outsourcing on this scale in toronto, so i'm not sure how that reflects over here, but that's interesting!! i wonder if there's ever been a push or a thought to incorporate the businesses into IA?? in the same way that many businesses operate with unionized employees?? something to look into for me lol. also, design is part of IA in the states??? that's a change that like. literally is still being made in canada with the ADC becoming part of iatse within the past year i believe, but i didn't know there was an equivalent for that change in america!! that's very cool

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, I'm an IT guy. Here in Italy is 09:30 in the evening and me and my workgroup are doing the go-live (As we call it) of a very complex software package. Thank you so much Bernadette for this! I loved how she referred to the costume as "Peggy." It was so endearing and touching! Costumes are so intrinsic and integral to the character's identity and their development throughout the story. Costume makers are wonderful story tellers.

At 64 and only a newbie at sewing but already in love with all historical clothing ( always have been) I have yet to make my first historical garment - it will be a Victorian Walking skirt that is cut out and staring at me daring me to start sewing it, I was lucky and got lovely wool fabric at an end of lines company, just luck of the draw what they happen to get in and if you find a great fabric its buy it then or never. At heart, though my love has always been for all things Regency so whether I ever feel I am good enough to consider making the jacket ( and can save up enough to buy the correct fabric) I had to buy it both for my own selfish reasons and so in a way my small donation goes towards helping all in CIC. I will print it out and drool over it. I hope this pattern outsells every pattern ever created. I have always admired the work that goes into creating all costumes, sometimes more than the shows themselves and since taking up sewing my admiration has only grown as I have always noticed that usually shows tend to be more historically accurate with garments than films ( never watch tv so cannot comment). Thank you for not forgetting your past - too many do - and using your platform to help so many. This most likely is something that is done but over here (UK The Royal Opera Company sells buttons and pieces of fabric based on their past performances, could theatres in the US do this or do they already do? I am slowly buying bits from the ROC my aim eventually is to make a quilt with the mixture of fabrics - most are fat quarters then decorate it with the buttons.

It was really interesting to learn about this topic. The level of craftsmanship going into those costumes is incredible. Your spencer looks so beautiful, and I think it will be quite a useful little jacket for spring (if we finally go outside, I hope). It looks absolutely great with this skirt 😊

Having _everything_ shut down around the world in such a short timeframe was jarring, and while some things have reopened (albeit with significantly reduced capacity), we are all still feeling the effects. Even in minimally affected areas, having a sold-out show in the old sense isn’t allowed, and probably won’t be for quite some time still.

I was one of the lead designers on a student production at my uni in Canada, and in March we also got shut down (obviously). The last thing I did for that show was tailor a jacket sleeve (student show, I designed and made/sourced, did a bit of everything) It was just a student show, its not my job, but it still hurt. It was going to be my last uni show and boy. I’m not over it yet. I’m really excited to make the jacket, I just want Broadway to survive. I was also supposed to come see Hamilton in May in NYC. I’ll see it one day, and I’ll wear my spencer to it ❤️
