I was blessed to have grown up with Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orkest since my father, Piet Honingh, was the solo-klarinetist. The countless concerts and rehearsals are forever etched in my memory and Haitink set the bar so high, few performances have ever come close. His interpretation of Mahler was second to none! May God bless his family!

Bravo , maestro.

RIP Maestro. So many good memories in London, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Tokyo come up to my mind, and I cannot stop my tears shedding. But, to tell the truth, I couldn't imagine how you were beloved by such a big audience in London when I went to the Royal Opera House for the first time in 1995. Since then, you moved, excited, heartened, pleased, fulfilled, uplifted, even encouraged me on so many occasions. All I can say to you is just thank you and rest in peace.

with him there was --never-- mush. never sound mush. you can hear every single instrument in his recordings. crystal clear. i was a little boy. 10 or 13. and thanks to my father i had the best introduction to the world of classical music. with conductors like haitink and barbiroll and many others. and the best recordings of mahler's symphonies are the ones with barbirolli and haitink. that is as clear as day to me. bernard haitink's strength was and is transparency. clarity. again: with him there was never mush. unlike many other seemingly great ones. in this sense, he was even better a great conductor. and besides, he was a man of great nobility. yes, i am a bit sad today. and i remember my first conscious listening. my first exact listening. it was this recording. and today i listen to it again. Mahlers Dritte. Langsam. Ruhevoll. Empfunden. ~~ kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7lhfaqbnqm7pZc.html ~~ Vielen, vielen Dank aus Deutschland, Herr Haitink !

In 2007, I was at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, to see Wagner's Parsifal. They actually got Maestro out of retirement to conduct a set of 6 performances, and I think I had the privledge of going to to the second to last or last one. Just being in the same room with him was special enough, and the Orchestra under his direction was faultless. One of my heroes.
