The build up to the fight was great. Tito had dominated the welterweight division and was in his prime. Hopkins had dominated the middleweight division and was supposed to be old. This fight launched a new career for Hopkins and he fought until he was 50. Impressive resume and great career.

One of the best fights of all time, an absolute master class by Bernhard Hopkins. Credit as well to Felix Trinidad, it’s a miracle he stayed on his feet for as long as he did. He kept coming forwards, even after nearly being knocked down several times. Great spirit and great heart, but not the smartest game plan, against someone of Hopkins’ statue. He kept his composure brilliantly, and patiently bought Trinidad’s, one way ticket to the canvas and kept himself out of harms way from Trinidad. A perfectly timed performance. This was the Golden Age of the Middleweights and Hopkins is the King of that age.

Odds makers made Bernard Hopkins a 3:1 underdog. Felix Trinidad was 29 years old and held a record of 40-0 with 33 knockouts. Even more impressive is that he was 20-0 with 16 knockouts in world title fights. Hopkins, The Executioner, was 36 years old, posting a record of 39-2-1 with only 18 knockouts. Many believed Hopkins was fading and saw this bout as a mere pit stop on the road for Trinidad towards an ultimate showdown with Roy Jones Jr. But BHop, inspired to 'fight for his country' after the recent 9/11 attacks, had other ideas.

Hopkins' versatility combined with his will and conditioning made Trinidad look like a one-dimensional fighter. Trinidad never seemed to be able to learn and make adjustments as the fight progressed. Hopkins, despite backing up some of the time, won almost every exchange and then cleverly either got out to the side or tied Felix up. He controlled the fight despite Trinidad being the one moving forward most of the time. It takes a real master to make that kind of a strategy work. Hopkins' conditioning and great chin also served him well -- Trinidad didn't throw nearly as many punches, but a few of his hard shots did land and Hopkins wasn't fazed. Styles make interesting fights, and in this one, Hopkins adopted a style and strategy that probably surprised Trinidad, and Trinidad was never able to solve it. This was one of the most technically interesting fights I've ever seen.

Bernard broke my heart this night. Although I knew Bernard was great tito was on this unbelievable run, I thought he couldn't be stopped but Bernard boxed beautiful. Notice how early in the fight Bernard never let Trinidad get set to throw his power shots. He fainted, he jabbed and smothered Trinidad every time he got set. Once he wore tito down a lil bit he took more chances and landed some hard shots. Brilliant fight by bernard. He also headbutted tito all night.

***** Luckily I live in Philly, Hopkins' home town and so nobody was a Hopkins hater, they just all thought Tito was the best guy since Sugar Ray, Hagler and Hearns. I also thought Oscar De La Hoya not only won the fight, but gave a pretty solid blueprint for beating him, though that's not Hopkins' style.

Lenny Hall He was kind of over-rated, though he was decent. His KO win against Joppy is why so many people thought he could bring his power up to middleweight and beat Hopkins, but Hopkins was really underestimated at the time. The really good thing that came out of this fight was Hopkins finally got the recognition he deserved. I think he would have retired in relative obscurity had this fight never happened. There were only a few of us that saw the relatively easy victory over Trinidad.

This was one of the last great build up fights I enjoyed watching. And the fact that this fight took place a few weeks after the September 11th tragedy. In my opinion, Tito Trinidad was a bit exposed by Oscar de la Hoya. de la Hoya would have won that fight if he did not uncharacteristically run from Trinidad. All in all, I thought Trinidad deserved the decision against de la Hoya because Trinidad continued to fight and de la Hoya for some reason stopped fighting.I was sort of convinced somewhat that Tito had a chance before the fight. But after round 2, reality started to set in for Tito. He was completely overmatched by Bernard Hopkins counter punching. And Tito did not seem to be too comfortable fighting Hopkins straight up as he was against de la Hoya. Hopkins was obviously the stronger fighter as his physique definitely showed that. Either way, it was a fantastic fight!

Hopkins didn't need head-butting and he certainly was less dirty than Trinidad throughout; he only got dirty as Trinidad was increasingly dirty. I 'knew' he would win because if the fight is relatively even (it was not but say it was) a man who spent 5 years in the slam and faced the politics Hopkins did face at this juncture (but not later) he was going to win. He was going to win also, because: . He was quicker . He was far bigger . He was far stronger . He was more skilled . He was a complete student of the game . He was more dedicated with an insange regimen of total denial of rich foods and no drink and rising 'stupid,' early to run . He was better coached - Trinidad Senior's advice (at least as rendered through translation) was nonsense. He also failed to tell Jr. he was getting his ass kicked. . He out-psyched Tito by throwing the Puerto Rican flag down during the build-up (without consequence) and throwing rice and beans on a table in front of Tito during the build-up (without consequence). . He knew the judging was rigged against him (the margins on the cards at time of stoppage were far too close) so he fought even harder. To the idiot savvedra felix... he pushed Trinidad because Trinidad was holding Hopkins to avoid going down. Such pushes are HIGHLY normal - Lennox Lewis did the same thing to Tyson - blasted him and when Tyson clutched him to avoid going down, LL pushed him down. Hopkin's finest hour!
