I would like to see a conversation between him and Rommel.
@penguinscanfly1099 жыл бұрын
Holy Eitr Rommel died in 1944, he was given the option of suicide for being involved in the plot against Hitlers life, because Rommel was a national hero the Nazis didn't want to publicly shame him, so they offered him to suicide but he would still have a full military state funeral. Shame really

Boy, would I have loved to have seen the whole interview. He stood up for this country and his troops, and didn't mind what he said, or to whom he said it. Shame we don't have more men of integrity and character like him nowadays.

Monty was a great general....but thank goodness we had CIGS Alanbrooke in the background covering Monty's back but also ticking him off when he needed scolding.

Monty took a lot of criticism from the U.S. generals, somewhat unjustly. They claimed he fought too methodical and slow in Africa. What he did was fight battles that did 2 things, bring victory and keep casualties to an absolute minimum. He saw the slaughters of the Western Front in 1914-18 as a young officer. They weren't going to happen to Britain again, they couldn't. Tactical genius? Not really. Commander and leader? Outstanding. A master of preparation, training, and perhaps most important of all, morale. Too bad Market Garden did not pan out. A whole SS tank division in Holland nobody accounted for and really logistically should not have been there just happened to be in their path. Otherwise, it's the Western Allies getting into Berlin first.

This is fascinating really as this is speaking to a real historical figure. It would be like listening to a interview with other great figures like Wellington or Marlborough and seeing them as real men and not figures from the history books!!

Any guesses who the Grand Chefs in history were that Monty says he named earlier in this interview?

Montgomery probably causes as much debate as to his true quality as almost any general in history. My two tuppence worth is that had he succeeded during Operation Market Garden, WW2 would have been over by early 1945, Berlin would have fallen into American/British hands and they'd have been calling Montgomery the greatest general since Napoleon. Unfortunately, Market Garden failed due to poor execution at several key stages and also due to some hideous bad luck. Possibly it was too ambitious but if Patton had been involved, it might have succeeded !

Although he was enemy of us as Italian, I would respect him as a smart and good General in the Second World War important battles including El-Alamein & Sicily.

That is why the have the rank Field Marshal for generals who distinguish themselves. Whats the point of calling them chefs now?
@stewartnicol30286 жыл бұрын
Montgomery was the finest soldier on the Western Front. He was adored by his troops from El Alamein until he took the Official Surrender of all the German Armies on the North German Plain...www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/timeline/surrender.htm

The most overrated general , as many english generals in WW2. The true England's pride were Admirals (Cunningham and Vian) and Air Marshals (Dowding, Portal, Harris and the less known Bowhill).
@humbertoflores25457 жыл бұрын
The most overrated general in WWII, he defeated Rommel, ok, but he used double resources and supplies from Allies than Germans had in that time. Market Garden operation was a total waste of time, men and resources that could be more usefull in the hands of other Allied general as Patton or Bradley.
@loneduck89535 жыл бұрын
Pompous British snob. The guy really was not very successful in North Africa, embarrassed on Sicily and Market Garden was a hot mess.

Montgomery won in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, the Bulge and the Rhine.
