This is wonderful and I would feel the same way if I were a citizen in Denmark. Unfortunately, in the US, people generally care only about themselves, not what is best for society. Take for example education. In the US, people go to university (paying way too much) with the dream to make big money. In Denmark, people are paid to university because your society understand the return value of highly educated citizens. It is best for society, then the individual. The shortsightedness of Americans and our societal structure annoys me to no end and makes me want to move to your great country. Danes walk the walk.

You think you have a choice when it comes to your education or healthcare in the US? All of them will mess you up. Literally all of them. Education is ridiculously expensive and so is healthcare. This is also true for insurance because getting something that is not available is not possible - Not treating you for a small wound is exactly what insurance does if you can't pay it. With free healthcare they will definitely treat it - Bad doctors won't keep their jobs with free healthcare. I'm from Mexico, grew up at the border where a lot of people have the option to work in the US, and came to Denmark to study a master's. People from outside Europe do have to pay tuition, but I got a scholarship from the Danish government. Any other European: Greek, Spaniard, etc., also have free access to school up to the master's level. PhDs have a liveable salary. And while studying a master's here, I worked at the same time to cover my rent and expenses. 15 hours a week was enough to live a comfortable life and even save for a flight back to visit Mexico during the holidays. If I were studying and working in Mexico or the US, I'd easily have to work at least double the hours in order to make ends meet.

While what Jørgensen said is true, and those things are huge reasons we're happy... I find these videos always fail to mention the Danish mentality and culture. We have this thing called Law of Jante (Not an actual law, but a mindset), which basically means no one is better than the man next to him. Whether you end up working as a doctor or a sewage worker, there's a need for you and you're important for society to run smoothly. The doctor might have a bigger income, but that comes down to the fact his work is a lot more complicated. But the doctor is not a better human being than the sewage worker. A doctor and a sewage worker can easily be friends, as you're rarely identified by your work, but as a human. This leads to Danes usually just being content with their lives. In other words, happy with how their life is going. It's not about making as much money as possible and have a huge house with a pool... And whatever else is in the "American dream". I don't believe we'll see Americans adopt that mindset even with Bernie in the White House. But I ope he'll win and he manage to change the things he wants to get changed in America. The higher taxes are indeed worth it and I think America would greatly benefit from doing something similar.

But some has already realised the nature of humans - virtually everyone operates on greed. If you tax the rich too high, they will find a way to shelter their money in tax exempt securities or invest it elsewhere. The utopian-ish vision of the social liberal fails to factor in history. It is seldom that we have seen the government running institutions better than the market. The market is responsible for lifting out billions out of poverty.

Another thing I want to share is the fact that every parent in Denmark encourages their children to learn cycling from an early. I can't explain how I feel every time I see someone doing it. This habit of being concerned about the environment or doing what is right is what the world needs to become a better place
@sebastianwallin37263 жыл бұрын
In Denmark the tradition with using the bicycle has nothing to do with climate change. We have in Denmark had tradition for using the bicycle since before anyone had cars. The reason is simple, Denmark is mostly flat land without neither hills or mountains, hence easy to use a bike. With a good infrastructure and due to high prices of vehicles and transportation and because Denmark is a small country where everything is close by. Having and using a bicycle makes a lot of good sense. Has nothing to do with climate and more to do with convenience and economy.

You heard wrong then. American dream: if you work hard you will succeed. If your idea of succes is having a mansion, lots of wealth, fame. Denmark really isn't the place to be. By the legislation put on companies and the taxes mentioned you will come nowhere near success. Denmark is a good place to be if you desire living in small but very expensive houses or flats driving small price range cars and travelling moderately for mild budgets. Denmark is the right place for you if you desire to work 40 hours a week and where 20 of those hours every week is not worked for your own wealth and health but for others and those others you're paying for are mostly people that hasn't benefitted society. The following: Education, healthcare, military, police, justice system, environment and infrastructure takes up 40% of our taxes. 60% of the taxes paid in Denmark goes to Social security and public adminstration. Stop this bs misinformation campaign. Wealth ain't something that just comes to your aid because you want it. wealth of society is the overall wealth created by every individual of that society. Why Denmark has become a wealthy country is because we have ensured using our ressources to its maximale capacities. We are wealthy because a lot of people are willing to work and work hard and effecient. We are wealthy because we aren't overpopulated. If we were more people it wouldn't mean higher gdp per capita but a lower gdp per capita. Thanks to our low population, our overall hard work ethics, our homogene population (not multiculteral), and reasonable traditions we are one of the best countries.

@handsoffmygun MF You keep repeating that Denmark and other Nordic countries are on the brink of collapse. By what measure? And where did you pick up a falsehood like that? Public debt in Denmark is around 36% of GDP. In Sweden it's around 41% of GDP. I'll agree that France has a problem. Their public debt is a staggering 97% of GDP. And yes, they have the higest taxes of all in combination with relatively low minimum wages and higher unemployment rates. That's causing them problems. Btw. I also believe that protesting is a stronger part of their culture. Bottom line is you can't compare France directly to the Nordic countries. US public debt to GDP is around 107% at the moment. I'm afraid the shit will hit the fan in US a lot sooner than it will here. And that is of course bad news for everyone since US is such a large economy.

not even that their healthy and happy that's good but what enables those two traits is education. without education people will shoot themselves in the foot over and over and over and by the time they learn from it, their life will be over. knowing what makes people healthy and happy is needed, and so without any education to guide anyone here in the states. we just roam around from idea to idea hoping something will work. when we get people who are educated, the dumb start attacking because they have no idea how anything works. the media calls it 50/50 and this is another major problem because the media is controlled by the 1%. we could just look at any other country and just take some of their ideas and build on them but brain deads can't seem to understand simple. 30% of the US are brain dead zombies that will say yes to anything the dear leader says. 30% of the country is under educated. it would be great if these people would just go live in a cave somewhere where no one has to hear their ideas. where they can be oppressed all they want at their own time. lastly it's more towards Tracy, it's not free. they do pay taxes, it's just FAR cheaper then anything we have because their isn't a greedy ass company trying to make as much money and caring as little as possible.

We pay between 30 - 32% tax but we don't have to put much effort into balancing out our taxes at the end of the year (takes about 2 minutes on the new app they released) so it's smoothly administrated, I hope for Americans to experience this in your future but I suspect that you need to aim for reducing military spending by up to half (a huge discussion with many moving parts) . In my view, the political landscape has shifted to the right the past forty years putting Rep's on the extreme end of the spectrum, Dems firmly on the right and progressives being the new left (however centrist from a European perspective). Party lines should be drawn for the people's sake. It's then you push through full-packaged progressive views. Trust me, if all Americans get a taste of a "take it for granted" health care system in its full honest form, they'll fight tooth and nail to keep it. Compromise at your own peril. Don't give the Dems or Reps the ability to make it less than is needed because it's (ironically) what they'll complain about when they are attacking such a policy.
