"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Not a single person had any hope of escaping Gaza with the help of this attack, no one had a prospect of getting anything worthwhile with the help of this attack. This is more analogous to being in a concentration camp and going out to killing random civilians knowing there is nothing to gain from it and it only legitimizes what is being done to you in the eyes of other people. Gaza has a right to defend itself. But tragically it doesn't seem to really have any actual means to do so that actually work, nor means that don't run the risk of killing a child. This is like anti-resistance, things done in the name of resistance but do nothing but serve the opposite of the goals of resistance. Hamas wants to go back to 1947, they killed and expelled their fellow Palestinians in the Fatah party, people who could never be accused of accepting Zionism, because they want to fight a war they can never win, pursuing a maximalist Palestinian state by eliminating any hope of a Palestinian state of any kind - much like Israel does by pursuing its settlement project. But I will say, Israel is just as stubborn and aggressive if not more so, and Hamas did offer a deal that Israel should have taken. But if they actually wanted that deal, they would have offered the only thing that the Israeli left and moderate right ever wanted Hamas to do ever since we left Gaza in 2006: QUIT FIRING ROCKETS. For fuck's sake I know Palestinians with relatives near Gaza who get hit by rockets.

@blahblahsaurus2458 In March of 2002, THE ARAB LEAGUE agreed for a 2-state settlement for the I-P conflict with the EXACT same terms as the General Assembly, (under the International Law, you are formally required to recognize Article 2 (The U.N. Charter). However, THE ARAB LEAGUE went 1 step BEYOND the General Assembly. In addition to Article 2, they proposed: The right of any member state to live free from threats or use of force They will normalize relationships with Israel Have economic relations Trade relations Tourism relations THE VOTE WAS UNANIMOUS! They all voted for the 2-state solution with the June 1967 border. They continued to reiterate their offer up to 2008. In 1988 Algiers, then Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (P.L.O) declared a state founded on the Partition Resolution, which called for 2 states, where is the Palestinian State? The settlers have been systemtically sabotaging the truce and instigating the peace offensive as they don’t want peace. Israel can’t afford for the Palestinians to look reasonable or have a moderate image as this is the biggest problem. This narrative would rob them of their pretexts, alibis, excuses for not negotiating. They must keep instigating violence in order to show the international community that these people can’t be negotiated with.

They need reality to he flipped on its head. They need people to beleive the economy is great even tho we all know it routinely crashes to the ground every 7 years. They want as many people to beleive that the Ceasfire movement (the only people on earth trying to stop active Genocide) are instead calling FOR Genocide. It's totally ridiculous. 2 different realities. They won't let Bernie out of thier grasp. Bernie knows they would murder him next or charge him with domestic terrorism if we ever had a legitmate and earned insurrection. They have old grandpa under their thumb for good. And they're effective too. They got AOC and most of the Squad too.

"No one is coming to save us" This has always been true and will always be true unless Jesus Christ actually comes back and saves us-- I'm not an atheist, but that's not gonna happen. Even if Bernie had become president, been the most effective president ever and also been on the side you want him to be on, he would be met with pushback on every level, especially with big money still in politics. You need to help your own community, talk to people, convince them, and to change hearts and minds through action and through effective arguments (which Kyle is great at, but he's only one man).

@@rollingknuckleballTechnocracy also isn't the solution. Experts in their respective fields tend to be terrible in others, but have the tendency to arrogantly assume they're experts on everything. You just need to take a look at some of the prominent public scientists. Do you want Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris (who's basically Bernie on this issue) and Jordan Peterson in your government? I hope the answer is no. There have also been nobel prize winners who believed in woo and conspiracy theories. The only real solution is no representative democracy (which is just a way to add authority to democracy - career politics) and instead install direct democracy with caveats. Power just shouldn't be funneled towards individuals. Because all humans are flawed. The only way to combat this effectively is to split the power up as much as possible while still being effective at decision making. The problem isn't that there are no good candidates and there could be if we just tried harder, the problem is that a representative political system breeds bad candidates.

It's not corruption. It's myopia. I'm Jewish, and an Israeli citizen. I spent four years in Israel as a child, and let me tell you, that shit runs deep. As a kid, we never really talked about Palestine or the Palestinians. There was a vague awareness of a conflict, and at the time I lived there, there were a couple of bus bombings in Tel-Aviv that were attributed to Hamas. But years later, in my 20s, I bought into the Pallywood myth over and over. I didn't want people to die in Gaza, and I didn't cheer their killing, but on some level, I refused to believe the scale of the carnage, because the alternative was to recognize that we were the bad guys, and that's a hard thing to do. Now, I'm not personally the bad guy. I haven't killed anyone, I've never fired a gun or pressed a button to drop a bomb. But as Israelis, and even as just Jews, we feel like Israel is us and we are Israel, and it's not until my 30s that I realized, "holy crap, Israel is a far right apartheid regime doing atrocious things, and it needs to be stopped." I'm 37 years old, and I've never really experienced antisemitism. I've lost ancestors in WWII (I was born in the USSR), but these are ancestors far removed from my generation. Bernie is 82, and if I had to guess, he's much more deeply invested in his Jewish identity than I am in mine. I think his problem is that, on some level, it's in his bones not to condemn Israel to the fullest extent, the way many other leftists and progressives do, and the way I learned to. I don't think it's corruption. I think it's a heavy dose of cognitive dissonance. If it were anything but the Jewish state, he'd not hesitate.

Bernie didn't say not to negotiate. He didn't say to continue bombing civilians. He didn't say he supported the IDF. He said it's not a reasonable goal to get Hamas to agree to a permanent ceasefire when they have already said they don't want peace... which is 100% true. It's also true that Israeli leadership equally wants war and Bernie could have done a better job of communicating that. Generally speaking, we cooperate with our friends and negotiate with our opponents. Given the alliance with Israel and the framing of the question (the idea that the US should pressure Israel into policy change), it doesn't make as much sense for Bernie to raise the issue of Israeli warmongering as it does for him to point out that Hamas would never cooperate with a ceasefire. This is Bernie getting to the heart of the issue on national television when time for nuance is limited. Even if the US successfully pressured Bibi into doing something he is deadest against, we still wouldn't see it come to fruition. It sounds like Kyle's issue is not with the substance of what Bernie said but with how he said it. It's really not worth throwing the book at Bernie over this one, especially since he has traditionally been one of Israel's loudest critics in Washington. I don't think it's malicious at all, but Kyle is straw-manning this one.

Look, Bernie and maybe folks on this thread and elsewhere misinterpret what the Hamas representative who said when he (of course) said they'd attack Israel again and again --- AS LONG AS ISRAEL CONTINUES TO ATTACK PALESTINIANS. I watched that interview! Remember, it didn't start in a vacuum on 10/7, nor did it start every time Israel attacked Gaza or murdered those living in the West Bank, nor did it start in 2008 when Israel murdered 1400 Palestinians nor during Protective Edge which I believe took over 2,300 Palestinian lives, etc, etc, etc. But someone, including all of us must explain it in context again to Bernie and everyone else that Hamas will continue to attack Israel as long as there's Palestinian hostages being held in Israeli prisons, or for as long as the siege and the occupation continues and as long as Israel continues to rain bombs down on the heads of innocent Palestinian children. THAT'S what was meant... ❤ However, that was then and this is now --- 20K dead. I don't think we were anywhere close to those numbers when the statement was made but Israel is making a durable peace a really hard sale now considering the 8K+ in children's lives they've snuffed out. Israel wants to continue until they either kill them all or they run for their lives into Egypt because it's what Israel has wanted and hoped for since 1948 -- ALL OF PALESTINE w/o any Palestinians as historical films and documents confirm. Maybe Bernie, et al must be asked what is the difference between Hamas saying it wants to destroy Israel and Israel saying and actually trying to destroy all Palestinians, eh? I see none.

It sounds to me like he's saying that calling for a ceasefire wouldn't accomplish anything because it's unrealistic. A ceasefire only works if both sides will respect it, and he doesn't think Hamas will. That doesn't mean that he's against ending the war, or that he's just willing to let Israel run wild. He's said that he thinks the US should leverage Israel's reliance on American aid to force concessions from Netanyahu, including making him agree to a two-state solution.

It's always struck me as absurd to use the military against terrorists. The military, when practical at all, is practical against nations - nations with borders and national targets like manufacturing bases, military bases, major commerce and transportation hubs, etc. But for fighting terrorists, who have no borders, no true national alignment, no obvious bases of significance, and instead are randomized in location, interspersed with civilians, not having any central bases or hubs, etc. the military is just (and quite obviously) "the wrong tool in the toolbox" for the job. For terrorists hidden in civilian areas you should not use the military - not bombs and tanks and methods of wholesale destruction. It's OBVIOUSLY the wrong tool for the job. Instead you need police/SWAT type actions. You need intelligence to ferret out where the individuals or small terrorist teams are, and then go in with surgical SWAT teams to get those individuals. Bombing and razing to the ground whole neighborhoods because of a few terrorists hiding out just makes no sense. You can (and should) have a military ceasefire, while a police/SWAT action continues. International terrorism should be countered by an international police system of Interpol, Scotland Yard, the FBI, and other foreign police organizations working together and leading the fight against global terrorism. The military should STAY OUT of it unless particular and specific support is required by the international police system. Maybe if there are terrorist training camps in the desert like you see in movies - away from civilians - you can call in for military support. But since 90% of terrorists and terrorist organizations seem to be imbedded in civilian areas, this needs to be an organized police effort. I wish Bernie understood this the way I do, and I think most people with common sense.

Secular Talk has devolved into 2 purposes: to make $$ for Kyle and Krystal, through controversial, attention grabbing headlines/thumbnails... and also to harshly criticize democrats (Biden, Bernie, etc), just to try to win over republicans, which will therefore translate into even more $$ for Kyle and Krystal. As for the Israel-Hamas war, the only way to get Hamas to stop killing innocent people... raping innocent women... cutting innocent people's heads off, etc etc, is to make sure it is not worth the retribution they will incur if they dare try it. Otherwise, they will not stop.

I think he is pretty clear but most people aren't that smart and have a hard time with comprehension. I deal with it all the time. If you are smart and can understand things without having to have it spelled out to you it is frustrating. Bernie is just too smart for the avg American.

@@squirreldude4971 I read that his uncle was a leader of a group of Jewish ppl in a concentration camp where they lived. He was the one that the Nazis would talk with to coordinate with them. They asked him to choose who would go to do hard labor (iirc) and he knew this was a death sentence so he refused and was killed. Bernie should be proud of that heritage. But I wonder what that same uncle would say in this situation. Would he be in favor of what Israel is doing to the Palestinians? A man who would rather die than have a hand in a death? I don’t think he would approve.

Kyle, I agree with you on this. Bernie had been my favorite Senator for a long time but his equivocation and lack of clarity on this is going to cost innocent civilian lives in Gaza. Non sense, this isn’t a Israel vs Hamas war, we keep getting reminded about Hamas tunnels, you can’t have it both ways, if Hamas is underground then you’re not bombing Hamas you’re bombing civilians, what both sides are you talking about , there should be a cease fire because you are not killing who you claim, if you want to fight Hamas go in and fight with troops , and fight Hamas , bombing a whole population, woman children and all is just straight genocide. We all understand quite clearly what the objective of this so called war is, and it has nothing to do with hostages either, is the mission to bomb the hostages into freedom, or maybe their lives don’t matter either ?

Bernie is correct: we could try to create a #Ceasefire, but it would be broken soon afterward when Hamas attacks again. There's no harm in trying for a permanent ceasefire though, but I just don't know how long such fragile peace would last. I'd figure the goals right now is to get the hostages released, to limit civilian casualties, and to provide humanitarian aid.

@AvangionQ
@AvangionQ 7 ай бұрын
@@jontomas2271 Ah, that's not the problem. Multiple Senators as well as President Biden's are already calling for Israel to limit collateral damage civilian casualties in their efforts to eradicate Hamas and get the hostages released. The problems are Hamas, as they will attack again if and when a ceasefire is established, and that Israel is currently not listening to the calls for a ceasefire. As for the Hamas killers who perpetrated the attack, unfortunately, that's always how wars end. Not every soldier or terrorist responsible for atrocities are punished.
