democracynow.org - Last month more than 4,000 people gathered in Chicago for the People’s Summit. Independent senator, former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders delivered the keynote speech. During his speech, he repeatedly criticized the Democratic Party, calling it an "absolute failure," and blaming it for the election of President Trump. "I’m often asked by the media and others: How did it come about that Donald Trump, the most unpopular presidential candidate in the modern history of our country, won the election?" Sanders said. "And my answer is that Trump didn’t win the election; the Democratic Party lost the election. Let us be very, very clear: The current model and the current strategy of the Democratic Party is an absolute failure."

Michael E - but he has something other politicians don't have and that is empathy. I'm guessing it's because of where he comes from. He didn't have to fight for civil rights, yet he did. He didn't have to go talk to W Virginia after Trump became President, but he did. He doesn't have to support the Fight for 15, but he does. He doesn't have to try and fight for lowered prescription drug costs, but he does. You have to watch his actions to understand that he's actually trying to make a difference for the average American's life. I agree that it's extremely difficult to trust politicians but you should consider judging them based on their actions instead of how long they've been in office.

West_Midlander If you mean Bernie standing up for women -- well not so much Berniebot Sanders has, multiple times, endorsed anti-choice candidates because they otherwise support his agenda of economic justice. Why is this a problem for women ? Women cannot access economic justice without full reproductive rights. Economic justice is impossible for women without being able to decide when, or whether, to have children. Lack of access to reproductive health care can put women into poverty and keep them there. Someone claiming they are in favor of economic justice while actively voting against reproductive rights is saying that economic justice only matters for men. Bernie's campaign was awash in misogyny and hatred for Hillary Clinton, and Bernie was happy to let the mass hysteria fester among his most virulent “Bernie or Bust” followers. Women wont forget that . It took Sanders until 2009 to get on board with LGBT rights -- before that he only supported marriage between a man and a woman . Not very progressive huh ? The sun doesn't revolve around the big primary loser and hating on the party that let him run under their banner hating on liberals and Dems in congress wont get anyone to vote Bernie NEXT TIME EITHER SHOULD HE DECIDE TO RUN AS THE OLDEST OLD WHITE MAN AT AGE 80 IN 2020 .`

ThE DuCk Bernie was getting arrested for standing up for women and people of color during the civil rights movement while Hillary was supporting an anti women, pro segregation Republican named Barry Goldwater. Who's really anti choice here? Also Hillary didn't get on board with lgbt rights until 2013.

ThE DuCk I believe "ThE DuCk" is short for "TheDumbFuCk" or "The DipshitCuck". You may be skilled in the lying by omission category demonstrated by your POS hero all the time, but the foundation of your narrative is just plain dumb. "Reproductive Rights" has a nice ring to it, kind of flows off you and Bernie's forked tongues. The repeated "Rs" can make for a dramatic growl-like sound effect, which combined with Bernie's vacuous shark-like eyes and oversized bottom dentures result in making him just look more like a nursing home resident ready to kick the bucket. Instead of softening the blow with smooth snake-like verbage, why not explain to these young people that they have a "choice", and that it's called RESPONSIBILITY. SSSsssss.

Jeremy Chase Glad we're having the conversation, but we need to move beyond Bernie too. It's good to question capitalism, but bad to stay within the framework of incremental reforms. That makes him a gadfly, and he also still supports imperialism worldwide in his rhetoric against existing socialist governments in order to appease the liberal pundits. You can call that "shitting", but it's a valid criticism and it's equally important to recognize Bernie's shortcomings too.

some of us already knew everything Bernie says before he ran, he has brought you to the discussion now and you are welcome, but we shouldnt think that he is the first to think these things, or even that he knows the most of all democratic socialists... Bernie was the wake up call, now its time for YOU to get to work, not time for you to keep asking for more wake up calls.. IE its not time to cheer him on as he makes shallow speeches backed up by nothing... Bernie has been around for a long time, it was the people in the past year who made Sanders what he is now, and so it is the people who are the real revolution, not Bernie. Your loyalty should be to the people and not to any leader, realizing that is the real "revolution"

We also wouldn't be having these discussions if Bernie had decided to fight for our votes after hundreds of thousands of us were disenfranchised in a rigged primary. Bernie failed us when he embraced the candidate to Trump's RIGHT (on war, "trade," and bank regulations), when he could have instead replaced the corrupt Democratic Party with a GREEN NEW DEAL. We could have a Green President Sanders right now, if only Bernie had been willing to fight for progressives over neocon Democrats.

It is true that - maybe - Sanders could have won. - Can you imagine the shitstorm if he hadn't ? They would still tell in 200 years that HE enabled a Trump presidency - and very likely everyone - even the Sanders fans - would believe it. The Dems still claim Nader was the reason Al Gore lost in 2000, that he was the spoiler and in this case it is even easy to prove with numbers that this is not true. Hillary Clinton would be on every show telling everyone how she would have won this in a landslide - and we would believe her. Not that she would have been the more desireable candidate, but she could present herself in such a scenario as the candidate with the much better chances. The Dems and Hillary - crazy as it sounds - needed the chance to mess this up all on their own. - One would believe that they would show some insight after this catastrophic loss and humiliation. But no, they double down on their losing strategy. In hindsight Sanders took a gamble even starting out the campaign. So he may have been too cautious in not going third party, yes. I do not call him a sellout for maybe making that error of judgement. He may not be as powerhungry as other politicians, meaning there was maybe a part of him shying away from the responsibility of a president - just a thought. He started out with the idea to direct the narrative and the discussion of the issues in a certain direction by his campaign. He said it himself: He was surprised by the crowds and his success.

I had read recently that during the 1960s, due to WWII etc. that over half the population was 25 years of age or younger. That explained to me so much as to the why's and how's the progressive movements, from civil rights, to anti-war and woman's lib became so powerful a force and literally terrorized Nixon and the right. The young changed the face of the Southern Democratic power structure and much more. It is not lost to most historians as to why Bernie appeals to the young, those who don't have empires at stake and are less fearful of change are near universally progressive and liberal. I have issues with Sen. Sanders but as an urbanite in early 40's I gave monies to his campaign though I knew he would lose my state. If any small change is to take place, and that is all that can be pursued through electoral politics, it must come from encouraging the young to vote. To make definitive change in a hurry, while the clock is ticking faster on us all we need outright resistance, with the threat of outright rebellion...the young will show up just for the excitement, we older crew must lead the way, and risk being jailed or even killed for our efforts. I'm with Chris Hedges, he's got the whole game in view.

To all the people who complain about Bernie Sanders' age: Yes, he is old, but he brings all advantages of being old with him. Wisdom and life experience. He kept a bright mind, he sticks with his opinions over decades and he has enough empathy to think about the needs of poor and young people. Trump is old too. Wisdom? None. Life experience? Well, yes - as a guy who was always rich and could compensate every business failure with inherited money. We can argue if he had a bright mind when he was younger. He changes his opinions over and over again. Empathy? I see none of that. Neither for poor nor for young people.

please pass this along. if you read this. you do not have to vote for the nominee. you can write your vote in and it's legal. in some states they've passed laws to not count the right ins. but you right in what you believe in. thats how voting should work. please vote your conscience and not be a sheep.

he popular Independent who was further catapulted into the spotlight during his 2016 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination made more than $1 million last year, according to his most recent U.S. Senate financial disclosure released Sunday. The majority of his income came from book royalties, most notably a $795,000 advance for his recently published "Our Revolution." Released a week after President Donald Trump was elected in November, the book quickly became a best-seller. Sanders earned another $63,750 for his upcoming "Bernie Sanders' Guide to Political Revolution," written with Kate Waters and geared toward younger readers. He also received $6,735 for his 1997 memoir titled "Outsider in the House," which details his career as a progressive socialist in American politics. The book was re-released as "Outsider in the White House" in 2015.

How to establish a 3rd party that is a force of reckoning? It would take someone extremely popular and well respected by the people to come forward and to be willing to step outside of the limits imposed by their political career. That person out in the political wilderness would have to meet with the growing legion of Independents and convince them that the time has finally come to create a new world from the roots of the political frontier. The truth is that the electorate will never tolerate one party rule(corporate); the electorate will begin to balance itself vs. republicans and vs. democrats as Independents realize they now have a home(and representation) in a new 3rd party for the 21st century, forward thinking and truly progressive. Because honestly, what we have right now with the Republicans and Democrats is *poop and shit* . Don't trust in it, folks. Wake up from the sleep. *Here's something that I think is crucial. "Do Not Use The Word, 'Viable' to refer to the idea of a 3rd party." We will defeat ourselves if we use the language of our oppressors.*

I respect Bernie and what he stands for. Especially for not giving up on Trump's voters (little naive thought), but for him the answer to every question is "Tax the rich" or "Democrats are bad". Nice for chanting, but the world is a bit more complicated than that.

How does it happen that the top 1% owns all the wealth? The government creates rules that favor that 1%. Socialism means a more powerful government. So, why do you think socialism would make things better? I think it might change who the 1% is, but crony-socialism nor crony-capitalism is going to fix a problem, when cronyism is the problem.

If the Citizens of Montana had COME OUT TO VOTE, all the money in the world could not have given the election to the Republican! Americans have to answer the question, Bernie poses, in a social and cultural revolution, to learn how a minority ends up appropriating the reserve wealth of the many worldwide? Because so much of that success is accomplished by the cooperation of the American people. Once they begin to unravel themselves en masse from the bourgeois institutions that hold them accountable to those institutions, a cultural and social revolution can begin to take shape and a new society can emerge. Basically, Americans have to rescind their cooperation and withdraw from the political and economic roles assigned to them en masse.
