Thanks for posting that document, great info. I've been refilling my 1lb propane canisters for years and this has got me to go through and retire some of my stock. I've noticed flimsy necks on some of them and now I'm going to trash em. I feel bad for the folks who have been terribly burned or lost their life... if all that liquid propane burst out in a small confined area like soldering in a mechanical closet or bathroom I can easily see death occouring, or TERRIBLE burns resulting in an agonizing death. I wish these bottles were built in a way where cost cutting didn't rule because they are designed to be single use, most people don't like tossing them, and truthfully as this shows some of them are so crappily built that they fail a drop on their factory fill.

Don't remove the sintered brass inserts! They are there as a safety element! They serve 2 purposes, to help regulate the flow & stop liquid propane from going out of the tank, which could cause an explosion of gas. Yeah, removing them will increase the available heat & flame, but it will be wildly unsafe! These things are designed to perform reliably for their intended tasks. Modifying them puts your life at at risk! My guess is that your torch should have been replaced at some point, as you seem to heavily abuse them. You also put the flame too close to the fitting you were heating, and may have caused it to overheat the torch internals. These torches are not designed to be used like that. I hope you have a large first aid kit nearby & 911 on speed dial. Also, you need to learn how to use tools safely and stop showing videos using unsafe practices. Never drill something while holding the work in your hand! Good way to put a hole in your hand.

Another comment in another video had a letter received from an engineer at Bernzomatic, who said the problem simply comes from leaving the torch attached to the bottle when stored. The seals in the torch are thus constantly subject to the pressure of the gas and deterioration of materials in it. Despite people saying "they've always done that and everything was ok", it does make sense. I take the torch off every time, and I wear big gloves when using these torches.

FYI, this torch has a LIFE TIME WARRANTY. You call them, they give you a return number, you take it back to Lowes and they give you a new torch. Just don't take it apart. If it's leaking gas, that is because the O-rings failed because propane is corrosive to them. This torch will fail, that's why it has a warranty. You don't need your receipt either. My 5 year old torch leaked out the hole too.

I had problems with the flame on mine. It wasnt normal, after watching this video i gained the confidence to pull my TS8000 apart. I fed a pipe cleaner through the main shaft, i found that an office staple had entered the air intake area. After i removed the staple, everything was perfect and back to normal. I guess things can make their way into the air intake area and cause a blockage of some kind. It made the flame come out all messy. I couldnt believe an office staple got in there and could cause a problem like that. Anyway, thanks for pulling yours apart to teach us its easy enough to dismantle and inpsect/clean

Thanks for the video. I wasn't thinking about how the spark got to flame, thought it was near the bottom of the tube. I've got the turbo torch 504 and was having problems with the igniter and found that the wires coming from the tube wasn't touching the base plate where they connect. played with it a few times and wala, it started working more often than before. BTW, I've got the one that has multi tubes you can put on the body, so I guess they're just designed a little weird and that's why they don't fire every time.

I actually read a lot of the recall and there are a lot of past and present law suits. The leak in the neck has caused at least two people to drop the unit, ripping the defectively welded neck from the bottle causing severe burns. This company knew about bubbles in the bead around the necks of their bottles and compensated by creating a breakaway groove on the head that would break instead of the neck of the bottle but it doesn't in a fall of less than 6 feet. Instead, the propane cylinder fails at the bead. A man rapped the head against a tree tearing the parent metal of the canister from the neck, igniting the bottle and burning him badly. Some bottle necks were braised instead of being discarded and were offered for sale at stores. There have been fatalities.

Blocking the vent with a small screw is defo not the answer its there so the pressure regulator thats in the handle that has atmospheric pressure on one side . if you block it gas will come down the threads and it will come out between tank and torch (it makes you think the tank seal is faulty) once its fixed you can leave the tank on permanently without problem and can easily be fixed again ..... here is the Fix:- remove the tank and the seal in the torch . You will find 2 indents (there to stop you fixing it ) Drill 2 holes at the side of them and with a pair of long nosed pointed pliers in the vice located in the 2 holes you've drilled unscrew the internals which is the regulator . You now need to change the "o" rings.. (mine was the small one ) clean up the threads on the body so if you need to do it again and reassemble it . Its the same as Rothenberg who tell you to buy a new one 😞 basically they have used the wrong "o" ring and nowt to do with the tank being perm on

have you had any leak issues keeping it attached to the tank for every day use or less frequent use cause i heard some ppl leave it for a year and find it has leaked all the gas out maybe cause the rig seal dried up ,would this seal be in the torch body or the tank itself?

So I fixed this problem the right way if anyone is interested. The problem lies in the part on the bottom you can't unscrew cause it's pressed against the threads like this gentleman pointed out. Just take a 1/16" drill bit and drill about 4 shallow holes in those pressed in tabs to relieve the tension on the threads, do it right next to the threads. Then take a punch that fits snug in that little hole that's used to screw the piece in and use a hammer to unscrew it. It will be tight at first but I got mine out without any thread damage. When you get it out you will see it has an oring, then there is another piece further in with two orings. One or all of the orings are your problem. Inspect them for damage and replace if needed. If they're like mine and undamaged, just take them off, clean everything and lube the orings up with petroleum jelly and put them back on. Put it back together and test it out.

I own a TS7000 for many years and it never let me down. Problem started cropping up when I used a hose to hook to 30 gal propane tank. I think the oil plasticizer got in. I managed to flush it a bit and it seem to work but never the same. Holding it upside down and getting liquid propane in does not hurt it. At least never in mine. I am still using it. Just hoping it doesn't go out.
@pingpong9656

I'm thinking the idea of the hole is to ensure propane can escape the handle area - if you get liquid propane in the handle it now has nowhere to go and will explode. Also, I hope the bit you drilled out was not a fire arrestor... you definitely don't want the flame to go into the tank when it gets low... don't get me wrong - I love your video, but always good to be safe too!

I have the same design torch, different brand "sure fire T111" Same issue started gushing out the weep hole on the neck. I have always left the bottle connected, never an issue in the 25 years I've had it. Keep it in the tool box on my truck in the garage all year. It emptied entire bottle of mapp gas. Luckily no ignition source when it filled a confined space. I don't recommend altering the torch at all given the explosive rick factor. Also plugging the weep hole only makes the gas escape around the red start button and the hold button and the rube where the ignition wire is housed.

@@melaniecotterell8263 So the hydraulically controlled shut off valve experienced pressure fluctuations that caused it to open and close rapidly, resulting in a seal failure? @@NOBOX7 your problem was the seal between gas bottle and the torch. it was not a problem in the torch itself. its the small brass tit that goes in the bottle did not seal, so you then get gas escaping and instead of going through the brass piece it went up into body and out of the hole.. its designed to do this and yes its stupid , but it has to have that as a fail safe. to me its not a fail safe when it burns like yours did..... normally it would be a extremely small amount of gas, but to me the best thing would be to get another torch and melt some alloy in that hole. or thread it and put a bolt in with some sealer....

The Spud does not control flow rate the regulator as it's called is at the base of the neck, if u pull it off the body you'll see a fitting with about a 1/4 mm hole that controls flow rate the piece u took out with the channel locks is the regulator what you drilled is a filter to keep the regulator from getting clogged. Inadition that piece of brass in that bottom spit is the burn back arrestor that's what will keep the flame from reaching the bottle

Hmmm, my Rothenberger Superfire 2 looks to be the identical build to this torch. Ok…so in future, spit on your finger tip and lightly press over that little hole….if it’s leaking you’ll see bubbles forming. Other than that, secure a length of brass tube into that little hole….that means gas can still vent if it needs to, but away from your fingers. Of course gas should not be venting period, right! My takeaway is this: Don’t store with bottle attached. Don’t drop the unit or chuck heavy things upon it. Visually examine the bottle seal periodically. Don’t tilt it over too much in use…like maybe no more than 45deg. If any part is not working correctly….bin the torch cos it’s better than plastic surgery.

I love the video. I found it very informative and entertaining at the same time. However, you've probably already figured out why your torch caught on fire? It was simply because you turned the propane bottle on its side which then caused pure liquid propane to come out of the torch evacuation escape hole at the bottom of your torch handle rather than trying to escape at the top of the torch, which might not end up well? Typically the liquid propane wouldn't ignite but I think you had a lot going on with your experiment & Murphy's Law took hold. Propane has a boiling point of -40°. Once it reaches anything warmer (Atmosphere) it immediately boils and therefore easily ignited by a flame unintentionally nearby. Take care and stay safe please!

You had no idea what it was, what was on the inner bit of it, and you just.. plugged it with cement and plunged in a screw. You're lucky you still have fingers. In case you're wondering, the hole's a pressure regulator - it keeps it running smoothly when holding it sideways and such. You should've tried cleaning the internals before plugging it, since dirt's your likely culprit there.. cleaning your torch once in a while isn't just a cosmetic thing :I About the ignition-testing, by the way, you can just unscrew the tip and watch the igniter to verify it without having to flood your workspace with stink. I'd guess you probably just didn't have good contact for it on first reassembly.

Are you still alive and use the same modified torch? :) Got the same issue with two some years old torches (ts8000 and ts4000), ordered two new, ts8000 and ts4500hs, both of the new torches have the same isse from day zero! I ordered those from US to Europe, so because of shipping costs i can't even bang those torches on bernzomatics head. Is closing the hole a safe fix? Thansk in advance

This is a real one but amazon and ebay is selling the recalled and fake ones with no labeling on them. What caused this is the little needle valve pin getting stuch open inside the bottle nipple. Same thing happened to me and I burnt the hell out my finger but of course I got mine off amazon and its not a benzo so I cant sue anyone for my suffering. Also I was lighting my fire place inside my house it could have went very badly and I could lost my house if I wasn't as quick to pull off the bottle like I did I could see others just panic and throw it then they have basiclly a live bomb ready to explode at any second

There are far better torch options but these turds still sell for some reason. When I get one in an auction lot of torches I actually want I treat it like the cutting heads on no-name acetylene torches (famous for mixer fires and poor machining) by smashing it then it gets recycled so no one else is at risk. The Turbotorch STK basic torch in your other video is good and the classic Turbotorch with regulator and hose is far more versatile and reliable (and fine to buy used). I collect and rebuilt US-made industrial torches to use and the further one gets away from consumer kit the easier life becomes.

Damn it! I have had a ts-4000 for 10 years, always with a bottle of map gas. I use it for everything from brazing to lighting charcoal and in the kitchen to peel peaches peppers and tomatoes . The only issue I have had was the upper connection that is held tight by a small set screw. It definitely has taken a few tumbles . I HOPE THE ISSUES ARE WITH THE MODELS AFTER MINE.

A Bernzomatic has to be the best dab torch ever made. Not sure of they were intending this, but it happened.
@BlondieSL
@BlondieSL Жыл бұрын
I've only heard of this happening on the cheaper models when they were mistreated. This guy admits that he's dropped it a few times and even the tip that goes into the tank got notched. I have a feeling that this was the main problem. Not a "defect" in the actual torch itself. If there was an actual defect, the news of that would be all over the internet in a huge way. Even up to Government standards. I'm buying one tomorrow.

@@ruen99 good question. Since this torch does not supply its own oxygen, and given that, to our current implanted knowledge, there is no oxygen in the atmosphere (if any) on Mars, attempting to use such a torch with the porous brass flame arrestor thing poses no actual danger (if of any use anyway).

The reason it didn't spark was because when torn apart the wire connection for the spark either grounding out or the spring wasn't making contact with wire from the striker. Being dirty doesn't matter.

The hole youi plugged id there for a reason- it is safety! it is like a overflow valve it your tank is not fitted correctly or the threads have obtained damage, a leaking seal etc. it is to relieve any back pressure that can result in you catching fire! You just made a bomb self igniting bomb! P.S. take the tank off after use or you will weaken the seal! BOOM!

Why not throw a wet towel on it and throw it b in a bucket of water or put sand on top of it, or in a bucket full of vinegar and baking soda with a wet towel over the top. Don't try to disconnect the tank if this happens to you. Also does anyone know what the deal is with those valves the little bottles have on them? Is it for refilling?
@30roundclip44
@30roundclip44 Жыл бұрын
Now i dont recommend this.but if you refiil bottle and put valve on top . ,its in a vertical position. use a small nail or screw and lift up on schrader valve on bottle to vent air to get bottle full.valve can fail and release all fuel inside.which can ignite a large fireball which u will b in side of. All Of this is considered illegal. And Do not vent all air. It should be on a scale.like they do with large tanks.stop when gas starts to come out and weight is comparable to a new bought tank. only do this when u use bottle immediately to lower pressures. It can and will explode. That valve is a pressure relief valve. So don't do it i don't recommend it's illegal to do . But adapter is for sale most anywhere.i just want to explain the dangers of what can happen. 1st degree burns put u in hospital for a month or longer .then twice a week visits adding up to several thousands of dollars for u to pay.most insurance doesn't cover stupid. I know this to b reality. JIM BEAM , JACK DANIEL S, HYDROLIC FLUID, AND A SMALL FLAME.IT RUINS YOUR BUZZ QUICK. IUSED WATER IN A OLD HYD.BUCKET TO PUT A SMALL FIRE ON MY COTTON SOCK. WATER WENT THROUGH SOCK .FLUID STAYED IN SOCK.and burned my leg big time.

Well, this was almost helpful. You edited out the only two parts I needed to see. Not really a complaint, though, since I was just hoping to see to flame lock removal, which isn't really relevant to the topic of the video. Also, I did get enough of a look at it once removed to be sure I know how to get it out without damage.
