@@yuithgf4524 I watched that one and the C&Rsenal video their gunsmith Mark did on repairing those POS magazines (Specifically Ian's!). They're the weakest part of the gun by FAR, the rest works fine.

my bad. just thought you mixed the normal and 30-06 chauchat magazine problems, as the mle 18's mags were the ones that had the most jamming problems (and by far). its just that ive seen some make that mistake and say it was the mle 15 that jammed all the time

Absolutely an awesome historical piece, you can always tell when Ian is presenting, and when he is geeking over something. This is defiantly the latter. However, I should mention that since the barrel is over 16" (US law, may vary internationally) and it is defiantly not full auto this is not an Assault Berthier. Not pointed at you, that word just gets tossed around too freely.

@@nothim7321 It does in the U.S. Any firearm with a rifled barrel (excluding a slug barrel on a 12GA [0.55"] that is configured as a rifle (has a separate grip and stock) must have a barrel over 16" (18" for shotguns). Having a rifle with under a 16" barrel is considered a short barreled rifle, and is classified as an title II weapon (the closest thing we have to a legal definition for assault weapon) under the National Firearms Act of 1934. Interestingly enough, if you have a handgun, and you mount a vertical grip to it, you have "manufactured" an AOW (any other weapon), which is treated as a title II weapon. Slanted grips are not treated as such though, to you can put an AFG on your pistol, and it's legal (I don't recommend trying it). 18 USC 921 There are several other laws, but this covers the bulk of it.

captain derp Until you try to load the magazines. C&Rsenal has a couple good videos on the Chauchat and its mags (I recommend Anvil 52), and trying to load the magazine without the holes is a nightmare. Add to that how flimsy these magazines are, making them easy to damage especially when you go prone, and this would be a terrible weapon on the ground in any context. Even in the air they preferred the Winchester 1907 and 1910.

I recall a French pistol with a horseshoe magazine. He should use that with the rifle, for continuity.

The US also had similar ones, a 1903 with an extended fixed magazine (IIRC 20 rounds as well). I'v seen one in person at a gunshow.

Jack Andersen you’re pretty much right, the difference is hardly there. That’s probably why we tended towards semi-automatic weapons for quick firing and detachable magazines for quick reload.

There is a good chance it never saw actual use. Stuck in a plane or a balloon somewhere until they were removed from service and then some warehouse packed for long term storage for a few decades before being stuck in someone’s collection as a novelty. The thing thing would suck for a sporter rifle due to the bulky, unreliable magazine and no practical benefit over a stripper clip in. And you could probably get another rifle cheaper than converting this to a whilst Berthier. Similarly for regular combat, over time throwing in regular three round clips would likely be faster than dealing with the magazine and even a marginal theoretical rate of fire increase isn’t likely to be a big deal militarily. The only places it really makes sense are in a balloon where the motion likely makes reloading difficult or as a survival rifle where the pilot may “forget” to carry a bunch of clips for a gun he never intends to use.
