Tropical Storm Beryl is on course to reach hurricane status as soon as tonight, with winds now exceeding 50 miles per hour. Hurricane Watches are in effect for Barbados, and warnings are likely to be introduced later today. The storm's appearance continues to improve, and good conditions are likely to lead to the storm reaching Category 2 status by the time it reaches the Lesser Antilles.
Winds of 100mph and rainfall of over 6 inches (150mm) are possible on Barbados, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia, and Grenada, with a more uncertain long term forecast. However, all points from the Dominican Republic to Jamaica and Cuba should watch the progress of this storm closely.
Another hurricane could form behind Beryl early next week and take a similar track through the Lesser Antilles and into the Caribbean.
A third area of interest is currently rotating over the Yucatan Peninsula, and has a chance of becoming a tropical storm in the Bay of Campeche early next week.
An area of interest could develop off the coast of Pacific Mexico next week, narrowly averting the latest start in the satellite era in the Eastern Pacific basin.
