Johann Ernst Elias Bessler, or Orffyreus as he preferred to be called, created a series of wheels he claimed were driven by the position, arrangement and motion of their own hidden internal weights.
Bessler's first public demonstration of what he called "true perpetual motion" was on 6th June 1712 at his home in Gera, Germany. This machine was a hollow wooden wheel a little over 4.5 feet diameter and 4 inches thick with a horizontal axle supported at each end by vertical posts. The wheel self-rotated at a constant 60 RPM when unrestrained and Bessler said it would continue turning at this speed for as long as desired or until it was stopped and held.

I added to my Playlist: Marble Machines, Contraptions, Mechanisms because I want the people who make their machines to see this! This is unbelievably interesting, and I feel such a device could help run a marble machine.

You know, I don't believe that anywhere in the few drawings available of this machine do they show that the pendulums pivot at the top. My opinion is that it slides back and forth on top of the shaft between the limits imposed by the u shaped piece. Otherwise, why go through the trouble of making that piece u shaped instead of just making a much simpler connection there by just connecting the lower part of the pendulum to the upper by a straight t shape? Also, I think that this thought justifies the fact that the shaft coming from the main axle doesn't connect directly to the upper t part of the pendulum but is raised above it in order to give it some slight lift and help it to slide within it's capture.

Well-made and nifty device! People shouting about impossibility of perpetual motion are correct, but are missing the point. The pursuit is often just as important as the findings!

Excellent replication of the "externals" of the machine, HOWEVER, it's what's "inside" the wheel that really counts; something conspicuously absent throughout the entire history of this device. Bessler probably did have a perpetual motion machine that was capable of producing a usable amount of power. However, he was absolutely paranoid that people would discover his "secret" and therefore went to great lengths to hide the inner workings of his device. He, like most inventors, wanted to be financially rewarded for his discovery and therefore sought the modern-day equivalent of a million bucks to reveal how it worked. This shouldn't have been a problem if it were a true perpetual motion device of some complexity requiring more then just basic skills to comprehend and assemble; however, according to Bessler, the inner workings of the device were so simple and easy to understand that once people saw the inner workings they would quickly comprehend and replicate it themselves, robbing him of his opportunity for riches. Hence his secrecy and paranoia. Many challenged his claims and many tests were conducted which led most to claim it must have been a true perpetual motion device; however, Bessler refused to allow anyone to 'peek behind the curtain', so to speak, until they payed him what he wanted. There was one exception... He revealed it's inner workings to a particular Count who agreed to keep Bessler's secret and provide him with funding to continue his works and financial pursuits if he was allowed to see the inner workings and could understand how the wheel worked. Bessler agreed and the count was allowed to see what no one else had seen...he was amazed! He would later write that having seen how it worked he absolutely believed the device was truly a perpetual motion device. He claimed the simplicity of the device was such that a 'carpenter's boy' could cobble one together once he saw how it worked and couldn't believe no one else had ever thought of it before Bessler. He was astounded! As a result, he funded Bessler's continuing works and pursuit of riches, keeping secret what he had seen and understood. Unfortunately, Bessler never got his million bucks and after many frustrating years of countless battles with those looking to either debunk his devices and/or steal his secrets, he eventually destroyed his machines and abandoned his efforts to get rich from them. Sadly, he later fell to his death without ever 'openly' revealing the secret of his perpetual motion device. There are those who believe he cleverly concealed the mechanism in the writings and diagrams he left behind and many an inventor/experimenter has tried to unravel the mystery of those writings in hopes of successfully replicating Bessler's machine; to date, no one has succeeded in doing so...or have they? ;) Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!

This wheel is probably just a motorized model but I believe Bessler's original wheel functioned as many credible witnesses who examined it certified in writing. Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel paid Bessler to see the mechanism & permitted the wheel to be built and demonstrated in his castle in order to prove it wasn't a fraud.

I was thinking the machine was getting close to a self runner, but the load of the raised weight surely choked it down and would have stopped it shortly. In other words.......if the raised weight is an allusion so is the rest releasing stored energy.

Could it be that the pendulums somehow threw weights out of balance within the wheels inner mechanism, and with the weights being out of balance they gave the wheel force for the pendulums to make a new swing to knock the weights out of balance again.

veproject1 I don't think there is really a whole lot of money behind these models. The model quality though is amazing. All the details are so elaborated... not to mention the time you obviously spent on thinking where and how to hide a motor (or whatever makes it work). Still, it takes some time to make a model. It takes more time to make a working model. It takes a way more time to make a beautiful working model. And this is what I see here.

This is a work of genius. So many of these models hold the potential of freeing us from the disastrous processes we are currently using to create energy. This one is like having two people riding a bike and never tire. It can be scaled up to really create never ending power. Today we are using unreliable and unsustainable forces to create our energy and destroying our habitat in the process and considering that energy accounts for between 75 to 80 percent of every dollar spent and the reasons why we work. Is to essentially pay for the energy. I blame banks and lawyers. They have been the people responsible for with holding other processes to perpetuate the need for money. Today money is a tool of slavery which has both parties of the family working to make ends meet and if we were to start using devises like this one we could create a world so sophisticated that most people would never have to work at anything that wasn't necessary. Today we have over half the world working to protect the interests of money and the other less then half working to build the world and feed the people. Daily we have people that are producers forced out of business because of all the parasitic businesses that feed off the producers until they can no longer afford to produce. People like insurances, lawyers, government, and then people wonder why the world is going to Hell. Fucking insurance is the worst dam thing in the world. It represents lawyers interests and isn't a solution to anything but a barrier of ignorance that keeps people from the help they need in the maintenance of health. Rather then just provide what is needed to who needs it. We need to justify with money why a person shouldn't have to walk around injured. What a fucking abomination. Having to justify health through insurance is the worst dam thing we can have. There is more value in health maintenance then waiting until something drastic has to be done because they couldn't afford to have the help they needed. Just to feed fucking lawyers. I see them as the dumbest fucking people on the planet to look out for our interests and to have to look to them for solutions is like having to jump into a wood chipper and looking to come out in good condition. I have seen how they operate and I see their thinking is dangerous to our wellbeing. I can see how they have strived to expand their importance by not looking for solutions in the world that would eliminate their positions. Instead they feed off the misery and look to create more every day. I have never hated a group of people more and see them as animals with no compassion. We live in a world filled with misery and there is no value in having a industry that looks for new ways to create it so they can make fucking money. Fucking money is created out of absolutely nothing and controlled with fear. That is where Police come into play. They are the puppets that represent money. They are no longer looking to protect and serve. They are the cancer that is slowly eating away at the fabric of society. They have built prisons and want to keep them full to protect their industry and created some of the worst jobs on the planet. I see the abuse and they are willing to commit the same crimes that they lock people up for which makes them extremely dangerous. Then want to be given special treatment. That type of person can not be trusted to up hold the law let alone protect us from injustice. Otherwise they would be locking lawyers up every time a Constitutional right is violated. I had 5 of mine violated and lost a million dollars of wealth to feed those fucking people and had to watch them destroy everything in my life. Then they allowed 5 suicide stressors to occur in my life and I had no way to manage them without them looking to put me in a box. Those people will pay me dearly for their interference of my pursuit of happiness to put food on their fucking tables and take it off mine to do it. I have absolutely no tolerance for dumbfucks and when they are in charge of the keys of justice they are not what the world needs.

+organizemyroom When you drop something, you get gravitational energy. Which is identical to the gravitational energy required to lift it back up in order to drop it again. Hence, anything resembling a wheel where you have to lift it back up again to drop it again CANNOT produce extra energy, and since nothing is every 100% efficient in energy conversion (friction, drag in this case), the wheel will slow down and stop. You can make it last a little longer by making the wheel bigger, but that doesn't get away from the fact that it will still stop. The only way you can get a net energy gain by dropping something is to not pick it up again. Like a waterfall, where you rely on some other process that _you_ don't have to power, to bring the water back up again.
