I love how much math and music work together. I stumbled upon the Cycle of 5ths and Circle of 4ths by accident after not listening to my teacher and not practicing lol... I now remember my perfect 4ths using the order of flats and the 5ths using the order of sharps.

Fabulous Kent, and for the tricky part, modern 3 inversion (B form?), trust me I believe you! Ha ha. Well actually, that is indeed the least obvious spot of the video, but importantly the harmony and melody do sound nice indeed when you play it. I listen to every single word you say here and to all the notes you play and it all makes real sense. It makes a lot of the mystery of music (jazz) I hear simpler and less mysterious (but it is quite another thing for me to assimilate that as a player, though I am patient). This exercise to me has nice similarities and differences with the one where the chords of dominants in cycle of fifths stick into a single keyboard interval. I very much like the role of 9th chords here and how it all fits together, I did not see this coming.

Thank you Ken - have your book and very much appreciate the written ii-V-I. I had my first piano lesson in my sixties and what was very helpful learning ii-V-I was writing out 1-2 patterns of the 1/2 and whole step moves in left hand block chords as it repeats. Also I took lessons from a working San Francisco musician after work and it cost a bit of coin - thank you so much for providing free lessons on an important subject.

Fantastic. Thank you very much. Following the whole tone fits this beautifully with Barry Harris. The one thing that annoys me about so many courses they treat the sharp scales as omnipotent dragging through each to basically useless high speed and no understanding. As all chords and scales are built on unchanging intervals your book and Rick Beato's (guitaris) are rare in starting with this.

What I came to is similar and is focused on cycle of 5ths but it’s 36251 not simply 251. I decided on covering all 12 keys but in whole steps so E JUMPS to F# to keep whole steps going to Bb and Bb to B is the only half step. Then backwards whole steps to F and whole step to Eb then Db then it’s done, only I keep to the 2 octaves each side of middle C and forces me to use inversions on many chords and some root based versions. It took a long time to get used to doing all 12 keys in one sitting and very hard work to conquer it but introducing some rhythmic riffs as I go became a lot of fun. And also introducing the modes starting with Dorian 7 days 7 modes but I err on some especially the mixalydian on which I like hearing that dropped 6th. So I stick to 36251 progression but mess around with a jazz or funk rhythm it’s often upbeat using 16ths. I’m 68 and it’s never too late. Even Autumn Leaves turns punk sometimes.

@@KentHewittpiano88 No I wouldn’t, I am too inventive and I prefer the simple route first off. It’s the (vii I ) through the circle of 5ths - Improvised throughout. And I stick to the 2 octaves in the middle of the keyboard, which forces the mind to make the necessary inversion come out of the fingertips. The thing is that improvisation is the key thing in all of this and I am finding that as my ear hears anything wrong it is corrected by selective preference. And it is all done within those 2 octaves. Adaptive fingerings which please the ear is the outcome and I find that as I progress with it the melodic phrases crossover from one hand (one octave) to another in a harmonic dance of rhythm. It takes time and much effort at first but I find that getting the most out of the simplest progression of - vii I - is the way to go when gliding through the circ of 5ths. It has a nice release of tension from 7th chord to 1st. And always lots to play with as far as rhythm and melody goes. It becomes all about invention as I progress through the circle which it turns out is from the 4th of the new key (IV) vii I and instantly that (I) is IV. Right off the leap to that diminished is dissonant but when the melodic phrase is applied to it then it flows into the maj7 of new key because that 7 is 4th ongoing. Forcing the ear to invent an improvisation on the spot is the best exercise of all. It beats uniforming the circ 5. It’s like living in the 60s on a dessert Island (misspelling of dessert intended). Yeah it maybe limited to my own invention but lots of tropical fruit and a nice piano, what else do I need while learning the circle of 5ths?
