@@G_de_Coligny Agreed, the writer's interest in psychological thrillers totally fucking derailed what was otherwise building up to be a sick mecha series. After episode 16, what the fuck happened? Same thing with the film. About 2/3 of the way in, we start going down this rabbit hole of "the self" and as someone who totally enjoys that kind of thing, it had no place in the series. It didn't help that Shinji is my least favorite protagonist ever and I hated every minute Asuka was on screen. That doesn't mean they're "bad" characters, if anything, the reason i hate Asuka's character in because of how insufferable she is, the VA portrayed her perfectly.

@@dylanherron3963It's almost as if End of Evangelion is completely overrated. Most of the "mind-fuck" elements in nge just came off as stupid to me. I mean, the clue is literally in the title, the author admitted to picking that just because it sounds cool. It's the same for most of the elements of the story, things are just there just because, and everyone thought there was some deeper meaning to it when in reality it is disjointed and vague because none of it was thought of in advance and just exists independent of each other, like the cool mecha scenes and the nonsensical orange juice story that is essentially just the genocide of the human race because the author was depressed at the time.

A couple of guys walk into a studio board room and put 1995's Ghost in the Shell on for the executives, and tell them they want to make this movie. And that is how "the Matrix" was green lit. Princess Mononoke also has an interesting western studio story. Supposedly, Miyozaki sent a sword and a note to Harvey Weinstein when Miramax got the rights to localize it. The note simply read "No cuts!"
