at my shop we tend to know based on the size of the tattoo whether it’s gonna be $150 or $400, and we tell the price to the person getting the tattoo before they even walk in the shop on tattoo day. however, if i’m doing a big ass chest or back piece, or sleeves, we go hourly and tell the person ahead of the time

Rappers A tattoo ain’t nothing but a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling. A permanent drawing on the skin that essentially shows that you are a conformist, a follower, a sheep, a person totally incapable of thinking for yourself, a mindless dummy devoided of originality, a misguided soul who wants to look just like every other tattooed clown in the world. I guess thats why there are many more sheep than shepherds. Sheep just follow blindly. Shepherds know the destination. Woe to you.

I’m pretty heavily tattooed and my advice is to actually find an artist you want to COLLABORATE with. My tattoo artist and I have had a relationship for six years. All of my pieces aren’t flash-I want something unique and meaningful to me specifically. Then I trust her to interpret my ideas. Sometimes we have to re-draw but she understands it’s a commitment and I understand that she can do it best! She also can tell me no if something may not work, and we have a great trust together. So, if you are a “virgin” don’t go to an artist determined to intimidate you. Go to someone who you would want a relationship with.

1) eat a large meal, yes, but have it be something reasonably light, so that you don't feel bloated and uncomfortable during the session. rice, some veggies, maybe bits of chicken for example, something you've eaten before and know your bodies reaction to. 2) bring a snack and something to drink with you, but don't drink a lot beforehand. you don't want to be going to the toilet every 5 minutes. 3) take additional clothes as well. specifically, something to cover yourself with during the session. if you're getting a tattoo for longer than an hour, chances are you'll get cold, even if the room is warm. get some warm socks, a sweater, etc. 4) wear soft, loose clothing, especially over the part of your body that's getting tattooed. you'll be more comfortable on your way back and the fresh tattoo won't be disturbed. but also, have it be something that covers the tattooed area to avoid sunlight directly after the session. 5) moisturize for a couple days before. a simple hand cream will do, but you can also use bepanthen. it will make the artist's job easier and you might actually end up paying less for the tattoo bc your skin will take in ink quicker. (but don't expect your tattoo artist to lower the prize just bc you put some cream on your leg.) 6) other than that, don't try to save money. this is art, it's a luxury product. you can live without it. don't go to a scratcher, look for a professional tattoo artist who works in a shop, whose portfolio consists of projects you like (not just one or two, but a lot of them, hopefully the majority) this is about your health and safety. and you won't save much money trying to get rid of a shitty tattoo. 7) check out different tattoo artists, even if you already found one you like. it's good to know what kinds of tattoos are being done, generally. 8) its a drawing on your skin. most likely, it won't affect your life in any major way, so don't expect it too. relax, pick something you like, and don't try to micromanage. 9) the tattoo won't look like you envisioned it, at all, because it won't come from your head. that doesn't mean it wont be good. 10) be nice to your tattoo artist! if you wouldn't say it to your doctor, you shouldn't say it to your tattoo artist. also, they're about to stab you repeatedly, so maybe keep them on your good side. 11) is tipping customary in your country? if yes, tip the appropriate amount (or more) 12) take care of the tattoo afterwards. your artist won't mind answering your questions about it, they want the tattoo to settle well too. follow their instructions and don't freak out when your skin starts to peel off; that's perfectly normal.

If you find an artist with a portfolio style that you really like, then specify the content, they will come up with a drawing of their plan, and you will almost always be more impressed with their take on the image than if you come in with your own drawing. You get to approve it (and make revisions usually) before the tat begins. The artist “doing their thing” is usually going to be a few notches BETTER because that’s what they do as professionals! Give them a chance to help you out!

Question Why do artists need tips? I'm serious. If I'm paying you 100s of dollars for your work, why the hell should I shell out more cash at the end? You're not a waiter making 7 bucks an hour. If you want more money for what you're doing, you should have included that in the commission up front. I don't tip my mechanic. I don't tip my electrician. I don't tip my surgeon. Why should I tip a tattoo artist?

I’m not a Tattoo artist but I’m not a tattoo virgin, and my advice is to actually not get a giant tattoo but also make sure like Megan Morris said, to get your smaller tattoo not on a big canvas area so you won’t have to cover it up in the future. So go for your ankle, behind ear, wrist, ect. I say go smaller because you don’t know if you’re allergic to ink, you’ve never taken care of a tattoo to before so you might not know how to wash or moisturize or whats correct to use and what works for you skin, you wouldn’t want to ruin a giant piece from bad care, and just in general have no clue how your skin takes ink. And also as a side note why make fun of someone if they’re in a lot of pain some people have very drastically different pain tolerances and can’t handle much , so why make fun of them you might lose clients. (Edit: forgot to also mention you also don’t know your pain tolerance yet)

Went to a different artist for my 6th one, got my entire side done, turns out I’m allergic to the kind of ink he used. It’s was brutal. Felt like I was being branded the entire time, and over 7yrs later it’s still very sensitive to any kind of touch.

Best advice I can give. Be picky and make sure you are 100% satisfied before the ink touches your skin. Fucken walk out if oh have to. People seem to forget that they have the right to say no. This is going to be on your skin forever. You don’t go to a restaurant and then be fine if they put something completely different then what you ordered infront of you.

Yeah with my first tattoo, I brought in my own drawing and I told him I wanted it specifically like that, no changes (it was just a line drawing, no shading or anything ) and as soon as he finishes the line work he goes "I'm gonna start the shading now" and I stopped him and he said that it would "look better" but I firmly said no. I'm so glad I did too bc I would've been so unhappy with it
@meganoconnor3069
@meganoconnor3069 5 жыл бұрын
I agree about being picky but just don't nit pick every little line in the drawing. You'll just annoy the artist and then you'll get annoyed. But definitely be picky about your artist. I waited 5 years until I found the right artist. Plus I couldn't stop thinking about different things I wanted for my first tattoo. Finally went for a giant nightmare before Christmas tattoo on my thigh. I tell you now I definitely don't regret waiting cuz it was worth the ten hours.

I've been watching this series for a few days now, and I enjoy the videos very much. It's very interesting for me to listen to their opinions. The only thing that bothers me is that they say not to ask for the price and to let the artist do their thing. I don't know anything about tattoos, but I'm an architecture student, so I do know a thing or two about art. Personally, I think that, aside from it being free, art is still a service you offer to other people. Even the greatest artists have to abide by the requirements set by their client, I mean, no client no money right? I just don't understand why they get so offended with customers asking for prices or specific designs. I too, would love to design and build what I like in the future, but the reality is that I'll have clients who have very specific vision or just don't have a lot to spend. It's possible that they'll only worry about the price after a few consultations and sketches, they might suddenly realize that they don't have that kind of money, how can that be bad? I don't know, that's just my personal opinion. I like to think that if you do something artistic, one way or another, you have something you want to share to the world; style, colors, designs, concepts or whatever... Please don't hate me.

I don't know why it's such a big deal for them. I only have two tattoos, but both times, after I told my artist what I wanted I asked them how much it was. If i'm going to get a tattoo I want to know I can afford it.
@Jnelle4
@Jnelle4 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not a tattoo artist, but I think what they're getting at is, some people walk in with a picture and immediately ask how much before they've researched&chosen an artist or let alone consulted with the artist at all (is it color, how big, how much texture/shading, where do you want it located, etc.), do you want this lion as line art on your finger or an entire back piece? 🤷‍♀️ I wouldn't think an artist could ballpark an amount with only a photo. (Unless you want a $20-$2,000 range, which generally isn't helpful. Lol!)

My advice to first timer as a tattoo artist: 1. It will be scary obviously for first timer cause you don’t know the process but relax, it is so easy, trust me. Nothing to worry about. 2. Think of a design that you like (remember this would be on YOUR body forever. Think of something that you like or you are passionate about. Do some research and look at other peoples tattoo and get a inspiration if you can’t think of a design. If you really cant come up with a design, talk to your tattoo artist 3. Where you want that tattoo (most first timer, go for leg or forearm or shoulder). If its one time tattoo and you are not thinking of getting more tattoo later, then it’s okay. But if you are planning to maybe get more (like make it a full sleeve, or whole leg, etc) make sure to say that to your tattoo artist beforehand, so they would give you recommendations. 4. Finding the best tattoo artist FOR YOU. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT. If your tattoo is small, then go straight to the tattoo shop, and talk to the artist and see if they have some time and can squeeze you in. ONLY IF ITS SMALL. But if you are planning little bigger. You need to discuss and make an appointment with a tattoo artist weeks, months beforehand and sketch your design with them. Once you have a design in mind, go online and search for tattoo artist near you who are specialized that design (personal tip: stay away from tattoo artist who are “all a rounder” “good at everything”, you are getting the tattoo on your body so obviously you want the artist is specialized in that design. 5. Once you find a tattoo artist, go to their portfolio or instagram (usually listed on tattoo shops website) and see their previous work (do you like it? Or do you not sure?). IMPORTANT TIP: REMEMBER THE TATTOO ARTIST WOULD OBVIOUSLY PUT THEIR BEST WORK ON THEIR PORTFOLIO SO SEARCH THEIR NAME OR HASTAG ON INSTAGRAM SEPARATELY TO SEE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE POSTED OR TAGGED ABOUT THE TATTOO ARTIST OR TATTOO SHOP, MORE OF AN UNBIASED WORK. Finding a tattoo artist is usually pretty hard. So research throughly. 6. After you find the artist that you wanna work with. Email, start a zoom call, or message them (whatever they say on their website). Say you want get tattooed by them and that you like what you see on their portfolio. Most artists would reply back to you in 24 to 72 hours. They might say they are fully booked for months and cant take more clients. If that’s the case, go find another artist. But if they say they can work with you, talk to them about your design in mind and start from there. 7. Once you talk to them and make an appointment with them. Start preparing for the tattoo day. 8. I recommended moisturizing the area you want everyday so it nice and soft on the tattoo day and not ashy, dry, cracked, or full of razor bump. If you are very hairy, tell them to your tattoo artist and see what they want you to do (some artist say leave it and that they will shave it on the day or some might say to shave it beforehand or whatever). 9. Get a full night of sleep the day before (TRUST ME ITS VERY IMPORTANT). Your skin would be rested, you are rested, better mood, not sleepy, overall in great shape for the tattoo. Don’t come in on a 2 hour sleep with coffee in your hand. 10. On the day of the tattoo, eat a lot but light meals and drink a lot of water to stay hydrated. (I recommend bringing a chocolate bar or protein bar if you tend to get hungry easily or planning for a big tattoo that would take hours) 11. Wear comfortable, loose clothes. (Bring a small blanket if your tattoo will take long, you will get cold even if its warm inside) 12. Bring charger if your tattoo is gonna take very long. Bring earphone to watch or listen to music while you are getting tattooed, or book (some do that, totally acceptable). Some artist like to be quiet and focus 100% of the tattoo. RESPECT THAT, DON’T DISTURB THEM. 13. Don’t come with so many people. One or two is fine. Parents are good. Don’t come in with 5 of your friend, its a nightmare. I recommend coming alone by yourself if you can. 14. And just relax and enjoy the moment. It’s very very memorable experience I promise. Take a deep breath and breath while tattooed. Don’t hold your breath. It’s common among first timer to hold their breath. Just lay back on the chair and relax.

For my first tattoo, the artist I had talked to me about how the one I wanted wouldn’t last long because it was done with a single needle. So, he drew out his own, MUCH better version of what he felt would look good and last a long time. Honestly, I’m glad he didn’t just do what I wanted initially with no questions. You should really trust the artist and let them do their thing. If they can give you something better than what you wanted, let them do it.

All my tattoos I have my artists free reign. Why would they want people micromanaging their art designs? It’s the same with a normal commision. You give an artist what you want, and the point of going to that artist is to get their style. You pay for THEIR labor and THEIR artwork. Yes it’s going on your body, but you can’t micromanage and disrespect them.

I went over a bunch of different tattoo shops before getting my first tattoo. Some because I didn't like their art style for the piece I wanted. Some because I didn't like the way the artist was so casual about the tattoo I wanted. I knew what I wanted and it had (and still has) a lot of meaning to me. Some of the artists didn't want to do the tattoo the way I wanted it done, they wanted to add things, or change things, which I don't normally mind, but this tattoo needed to be done exactly the way I had "envisioned". Sounds arrogant but it was a sort of memorial to my father who had passed away earlier that year and I wanted it how I wanted it goddammit. A couple of them I ended up going back to later for other tattoos. They totally got it, and had no hard feelings. One particularly memorable artist though, tried to get me to do something completely different. He started out okay, drew a pic of what I described, and it was good. We made another appointment to meet about the cost and whatnot, but when I went in again he had started adding extras to it. I told him I didn't want anything like that but he told me to withhold judgement and I did for a bit. Then eventually came the day I was to get it done, and lo and behold the original tattoo wasn't even there anymore. "Yeah but this one looks cooler anyway" he said. Didn't get anything from him. Walked right out. He's out of business now too, so that's good.

campbellsoup93 Dude there is nothing wrong with getting the tattoo you want, the way you want. A memorial that has a lot of emotion, memories, respect and tribute behind it is definitely an exception to artistic freedom. Most artists completely respect that because of how much it can mean to their customer. I have had more than one person come to me and say, this is for my mom and it needs to be 99% accurate. I am more than happy to do it, the only thing that I've ever suggested was placement. Maybe it's too big, too small so it would look better somewhere else or I will change the size for them if they insist. It's my job to give you what you hope for or what you bring in.

I researched the crap out of my artist and had several consultations. I came with my idea, showed examples of what I liked and disliked and had a through conversation. My tattooer had artistic license to creat a design based on what I wanted. We went over the design and I loved them. They listened to my wants and desires and created two beautiful works of art that I am proud to have on my body. It’s should be a collaboration between the tattooer and the canvas. I don’t agree that a tattooer should have free reign to do whatever they want, unless that is what is agreed upon. Which is why research is so important. What I did for my two big pieces was to make sure to I got a lot of rest week leading up to tattoo day, I made sure I am very hydrated and I ate a carb/protein rich meal. I brought light snacks (yogurt, cheese/fruit, dark chocolate), gatoraid and water. I bring good headphones and my ipad with my podcast/audiobook/music/videos all downloaded and I made sure I was ready to go. I am not a gabber. I let my artist get into their zone and I sit back, relax and let them work their magic. A tattoo requires a lot of trust between two people. That is why the consultation process is so important.

If you want a tattoo that really means something to you, family, tribute, etc. don't get it as your very first. On your first you're gonna be excited/nervous and probably make some kind of mistake... not explain something to your artist correctly, not completely understand the process, not be able to envision what the finished piece will be like from the drawing/stencil, etc. For your first get something you like, but doesn't have deep meaning to you. I've always wanted a tattoos but kept overthinking and was scared of getting one (reasons: Latino parents). Long story short, I mentally made up my mind for tattoo, drove to a shop that was open late/ accepted walk ins, and got a tattoo of the first thing I really wanted -a small song lyric. That honestly helped me transition in me getting more tattoos when I realized I didn't regret what I got. I definitely agree on doing your research (whether it be the artist you want or the shop you want to go) but also make sure you can afford it, don't try to haggle the artist cause that's just rude. As for them saying to let the artist "do their thing," it all really depends. If they create a sketch for you and state they want to fix it up a bit, that's fine since you' can see if it's "better or not." But if the artist is trying to change the piece in the middle of tattooing, that is a hell no. Don't even want to risk the possibility of disliking it.

they seems to forget that it's MY BODY so trust me, I will micro manage and if the drawing is not like I want it, the artist will change it until I'M satisfied. plus I don't think that a specific artist is necessary if you want a more generic piece or if you come with you're own drawing (for 2 of my tattoos I draw them myslef and the artist only straighten them and make them look neater).

I was lucky, my first tattoo was from a friend of mine who's a tattoo artist and a well recognized one at that. I had known her for a while and seen a lot of her work for months before I even considered getting anything done. I knew her and trusted her and definitely wasn't dissapointed with the finished product.

i waited till i was 32 to get my 1st one. It's a simple font tat on the inside of my right wrist. The script is very legible, feminine yet badass looking at the same time. I talked to MANY artists before i picked my guy; Rodrigo Canteras from 5Points here in NYC. Rodrigo was the ONLY artist i spoke to in my search who actually asked ME questions regarding myself, what I wanted and how i wanted it done. That really stood out to me and plus, everyone at the shop I met was awesome to me. And my artist was very attentive knowing it was my 1st time.

At first I thought tattoos were sketchy, then I thought hey these are kinda dope, and now I adore them for the pieces of art they are, and my respect for the artists that create them is off the charts. I got my first tattoo 5 days ago ,i was soooo nervous , mostly because i was wondering how i would deal with the pain and what amount of pain i would feel , but the day came i got to meet and talk to my tattoo artist and we got along really well and then he started the work on my forearm and i can tell for sure , i really thought that the pain would be alot worse than it really was. Don't be scared , most likely you will be , but just trust your tattoo artist and some parts depending on where you place your tattoo , might hurt more than others , but the pain is nothing bad , you mostly feel the vibrations, i'm really glad i didn't quit getting this tattoo , it was an awesome experience and i'm gonna do more in the future.

I’m not a tattoo artist, just an artist, so I understand letting tattoo artists put their own twist on your tattoo may be a good thing 1) it will be unique and original. 2) it will probably look better because they are the professionals, so hear them out. 3) tattooing is an art, so if they feel good and confident in their artwork, it will likely be amazing as hell. 4) if you can’t trust them or their vision, you probably shouldn’t get a tattoo by them.

Many artists wanted to flip them which didn't work for me. listened to advice consulted with an artist who listened and explained why the font I wanted isn't a good for a tattoo. Worked with me. Felt calm and confident in what we came up with. I love them Also he warned me tattoos like pringles once u start u want more!! So true planning my next tattoo.

My first tattoo I had covered up hence do your research plus the tattoo artist didn't do what I wanted or where I wanted but I had just turned 18 and my best friend took me and I was afraid to speak up. All my other tattoos have been by the same artist I tell him my vision/ idea and let him loose. He's never disappointed me. Especially my memorial tattoo for my dad he refused to put his death date(it was the day after he died and 2 days before my daughter's birthday) and told me if I decided later on that if I still wanted it he'd do it at no charge. So thankful he did that I never got it done. He knew me well enough to speak up and know I'd regret it. It's a beautiful back piece.

I love how these are all “research!” and here I am trusting my first tattoo to an apprentice. They’re my friend yes but the tattoo is about a mental health journey of mine and how I’ve been inspired to move forwards and be brave in rediscovering who I am. And They’ve quit a tech job where they were poorly treated and have started this new career path that they are Excited about. So I don’t care if it’s not gunna have perfect lines or maybe a bit of inconsistent shading. They’re the perfect person for the job. Besides they were also an artist before and their composition has been perfect so far. I’m sure the wobbly bits can be fixed later on! I guess in a way that Is research?

I don't think I missed it, but the only person that mentions it is the last one Nikki. The passing out part. I have never passed out while getting a tattoo, but I have always gotten that light headed feeling within 5 minutes. I rest and then I'm good to go for the rest of the session without a break. But I still remember my first tattoo getting that feeling and kind of freaking out (not bad just internally) because no one warned me that could happen. The second tattoo I got I said something to the artist and his response was a long the lines of "Oh yeah that happens to a lot for people, even ones that are covered in tattoos. I can't believe the artist didn't give you a heads up about that with it being your first tattoo" So first timers you might get light headed, no reason to power through, just tell the artist if it starts, take a breather have a sip of water and you'll be good.

I just got my first tattoo yesterday. My advice is to think good about what you want. And if you have a good idea just go in to shop, talk to the artist, let them give there input ( there the ones that know what will look good). And make sure that you feel comfortable with your artist, but than just go for it and don’t overthink it too much.

I was and still am super happy with my first tattoo. My cousin's wife is a tattoo artist and although it was in a very sensitive spot and I was in a lot of pain I could trust her to make sure it came out beautiful and I wasn't embarrassed from her because I knew her and she never made me feel about crying. I got a butterfly and some lettering on the top of my wrist to represent the butterfly project. I've had a long history of self harm and the tattoos going over the scars and some fresh healing cuts was extremely painful but it was totally worth it and it has helped me tremendously with cutting.
