Great reviews! I've used a Thermarest Trail Scout for years but it is quite bulky if you are into more minimalist camping. I recently picked up a cheap RikkiTikki lightweight pad ($36.00) and I've been surprised by how well it has worked as well as how small it packs! The Thermarest is now my car camping pad!

When it comes to comfort I opted for a Exped Megamat 10. It's not particularly light at 5lbs 9oz, it's pretty bulky to pack at 31"x10", and it isn't cheap, around $170, but at the end of a long day in the saddle and you are looking for a great nights sleep it is supremely comfortable.

Thank you for a great comparison and review. I think my NeoAir XLite is great for backpacking, heard they get quieter with more use (?). But that Q-Core looks wonderful for motorcycle camping. Looks like it's worth the cost.

I too have been involved with camping all my life (55 years old now ;-) and have now accumulated quite a few types of mattress. I found for hiking or travelling with a motorcycle where space ( and weight) savings need to be considered, that the foam-filled self-inflating types such as my Thermarest mats can be a bit bulkier and offer less padding. My latest GO TO mat is the EXped SYnmat Long Wide version which ticks every box for me . All of these products are vulnerable to puncture though so i recommend a real thin under mat of foam or Reflextix ( bubble wrap) to use underneath ? I just need a half length for the torso area where most of the weight will be on the mattress. This is also used for kneeling on when i organise kit, cook and prep or just lounge about . After a few tiny punctures and repairs it becomes a huge help and is a multi-purpose addition to my kit. Thanks for sharing ! Si

Awesome review as usual ! Personally everything I own is small and light or both in my camping kit with the exception of my mattress. If you won the lottery or if they are listening on here I’d love to see you try the Exped Synmat XL , it’s comparable with the Big Agnes , it has a deadly Schnozzle Pumpsack with it and is thick and insulated. Way bigger that the BIg Agnes inflation sack. Exped send this man some gear !!!!

I have had many different BA mattresses over the years and loved them all and also never had a problem with any. But I also do long distance hiking trips all over so lately for 4 seasons I have the Nemo Alpine Tensor and if I only need 3 seasons I have the regular Nemo Tensor. Both have fantastic insulation, pack very small, don't squeak and are large enough at the shoulders. Also very good for side sleepers and quiet. Check them out you won't be disappointed. Also fantastic/quick self inflating. Good review. Cheers

I’ve regularly used my Climate Static V (not the luxe) for hiking/moto camping for years. I’m 6” and 240lbs and it works well - though a luxe might be nice. It works well (even uninsulated) at around 30° if you use a good sleeping bag and thermal layers. Mind you, I’m originally a Montana boy, so cold and comfort aren’t priority #1 for me. ;)

Ive had the Neo air Thermarest for many years. The lifetime guarantee is superb. They can creek a little, but that reduces to nothing with regular use. Try using it at home, and deflating and inflating it everytime you use it.I tend to go camping on my bike in fairly severe winter weather, and the insulation is excellent. They cost a lot, but if they go wrong, and Ive had one for 10 years, Thermarest replace it without argument. They pack down to almost nothing, but not suitable in standard size for the wider person. For many years I had cheap inflatable mats, which never lasted more than a few nights use, so its been cheaper long term to get the better quality Thermarest.

You don't really need an air mattress. A Ridge-rest classic foam sleeping pad does the same thing (insulates you from the cold ground) for $20. I do use an inflatable mattress on car / bike trips where bulk doesn't matter. Again, it's made by Therm-A-Rest and I have had it since about 1995. 25 years and hundreds of nights is a pretty strong reason for me to recommend their products.
