Lucky for us - the swells were too rough in our intended anchorage and forced us to move around the corner to the spectacular "Cul De Sac" amphitheater! Here we found the most amazing - and arguably the most beautiful anchorage in Newfoundland. Beyond the drop dead spectacular scenery we found yet another old outport just barely noticeable after the years and Mother Nature have almost reclaimed the incredible ruins here.
We love exploring remote places during our adventure travel aboard SV Hakluyt. Many of the remote areas in Newfoundland are riddled with vestiges and relics of the past.
Barely visible relics, building foundations, and other evidence give clues to a different time when the economy was driven by fishing and access to fishing grounds which often dictated where these settlements took root. Today however these 100+ year old settlements are receding back into the earth. The outport we found in this episode made us wonder what it must have been like to live in such a remote outport - year round and OFF GRID! These folks were hard core, not to mention dedicated to their way of life. In many ways it is hard to imagine - in others - we like to think we are following in their footsteps living off grid and more or less self sufficient!
Cul De Sac is uniquely special out of all the old abandoned towns, buried towns, ghost towns we have visited. We believe strongly in preserving the history of this unique place and reached out to the Provincial Archeological Office to get more information and work with them to help understand how important this location is to preserve. We will be providing updates on our website along with additional photos and information.
