I love living in DC. Tons of museums, and a whole bunch of things to do. If you don't live in a terribly poor neighborhood, it's a nice place to live.

I won't even go to D.C. on vacation to see the monuments and museum's let alone live and retire there.

That's what we did. We retired. We have a huge home (over 5000 sq. ft. on a couple acres) and had considered downsizing. But then I thought what will I do with all this stuff. We're already in Colorado one of the best states to retire in. So we retired in our own home.

We live on the north coast of Oregon, but wintered for many years in Palm Springs. It's the best of both worlds!

That was a good idea pre-COVID. We have found a large percentage of our relationships destroyed by it. I’m not sure it matters if we move or not.

@@mafp22w If you live in two communities you have two groups of friends. Retirement in a 55 plus community puts you together with people that share one thing at least, you know the past. For years we rented in Palm Springs, our friends had moved down there and we enjoyed doing stuff with them. When the weather got too hot they would often come up to Oregon. But now they have passed and we are looking to buy our own place down there.

Weather, healthcare, cost of living and crime rate should be the major factors for seniors.

It's actually a fantastic place to live - if you can afford it. And while it costs a lot to live here, you can make a lot of money. And if you can save a decent portion of it, it would be a great place to retire. But on a fixed income with little saved - I can see how one might want to head to another state.

That's what I like about California. Poor or unsuccessful people are leaving the state for "cheaper states", Good Riddance!

today its fine, it was not fine a couple weeks ago, she had ice on her front steps and walkway. She is about 15 miles east of Mountain Home

on the north coast yes, but she has had some really hard weather in Jan and Feb and some years back a tornado went through near Gassville and messed it up pretty bad so she takes those tornado alerts seriously

We love Palm Springs, great place to retire. For sure you have three months you can't go outside till ten at night due to the heat. But for the other nine months it's great. We spent at least 10 winters there renting from our friends and had planned on buying, but OMG the taxes!!!! We have decided on Az. and will be buying there tis fall, but only for the winters. We currently live on 7 acers of river frontage on the Columbia river in NW Oregon, great in summer but gloomy in winter.

Yes, i agree. I live in western ny. Cost of living here (outside of nyc) is not bad. Education system here better than most states. Yes, we get snow, but, we almost never have to worry about tornadoes, hurricanes or wildfires. Taxes are somewhat higher than many states, but you get what you pay for in services ,ect. Everyone hates paying taxes until they need government to do something for them.

The problem with NY, besides the very high taxes and bad winters, is the salt they put on the roads. It destroys your car, it will even destroy the steel in a bridge or a parking garage.

The delta area is primarily big farming operations. cotton, rice, soybeans and corn take up the majority of the land. It is flat and poverty is rampant. Many cities in the delta area are drying up, falling apart. While the northwestern part of Arkansas enjoys great job growth, affordable living, and a low crime rate. Although Hot Springs is a resort and retirement community many people flock here because of the cheap cost of living. We have very larger retirement communities with golfing, boating and many types of recreation. I would say that 40% of the people who retire here are from Chicago and Iowa and in the retirement Village 90% are from other states where the cost of living is much higher. I have lived in most of the world. I have worked in the big cities, NYC, Houston, Dallas and was shocked at the cost. Houston was the cheapest city to live in, but the traffic and crowding were horrible. Here a traffic jam is usually 20 cars backed up. Rush hour is from 5 to 5:30. We have a National Park right around the city. Our city limit is confined by the park limiting the city to a mere 35 square miles. But our county host about 100,000 people. The problem of these "so-called" facts is they combine an entire area of a state and that is their criterion. A dollar goes further here than anywhere else except Mississippi. Mississippi has the same problems as our delta country. As I have always said, a picture has two sides, one you see the other you do not see.

My wife and I are thinking of retiring to Arkansas. I'm originally from the southwestern part of the state but we live in PA now. I completely agree, the delta is terrible. Hot Springs is fantastic though. It's not without is problems but overall I think it's our best bet for the kind of life we want.

Yeah I took my wife to Hot Springs for vacation a few years ago and she liked it. I have friends there too. I also came really close to getting a job at the passport center over there. I used to play the ponies at Oaklawn a lot back in the early 90s. Really like Hot Springs.

Jason Rondeau most of the top tier states get more money from the federal government then they pay in aka welfare states, whereas the lower tiwr states, which are predominantly dem states pay more in to fed government then they get in return. As long as states get more from the fed government, they will be better to retire in. All this will be adversely effected when austerity through tax cuts cause the fed government to severly cut money paid out to these welfare states.

If you look at the most impoverished areas of the U.S., you'll find them all in Democratically controlled areas...jus sayin

Those statistics are deceptive because they consider social security and military pay to be a state getting money from the federal government, when in fact those two items should be removed from the equation because they follow the individual and are the direct result of working for a living.
