This is why people use mage builds instead of ranger builds. You get an infinite amount of magic that's refilled whenever you rest at camp. Meanwhile you have to farm for hours to get a good amount of arrows to use if you can't just buy that type.

I don't focus on bows in my build, but early on in my initial playthrough they were pretty essential. I found the best farming spot for bones to be in the fields west of the Stormhill Shack. From the top of the hill down to the evergaol, roughly 3-4 large herds, and relatively quick to farm from horseback with a short bow. the feathers are the real pain in the ass.

@@betteryou7hanme you can get them at the impassable greatbridge grace in caelid. Right on the other side of the tree there's 3 birds you can farm in 10 seconds

Yup. If you are going for a bow build, sadly I’d say it’s not viable. I mean, you can beat the game with a pure bow build, but it’s more of a test your self handicap. They are a great support weapon however for non magic builds. Really good for picking up groups of enemies from afar.

Good early locations to farm arrow materials: for bones the path in weeping peninsula from the walking mausoleum to the pilgrimsge church has about 25-30 goats. For flight pinions, the beach behind the isolated nomadic merchant in weeping peninsula just before the 2 land octopus enemies has about 15 birds. Smoldering butterflies can be farmer north of the warmaster shack in an area with 2 lava slugs, it has 8 smoldering butterflies Bloodrose can be acquired at Fort Haight its especially easy after clearing the fort the first time, there are 4 bushes of bloodrose. Not too sure about poisonbloom but the area north of morne castle has a poison area with a few. These are good early on to get you started until you progress and buying arrows becomes easier.

I mean in all honesty one arrow shot can get you about 100-300 more arrows

Though I haven't tried a Bow run in Elden Ring yet, I would like to point out that you can very easily acquire the Serpent Bow at the start of the game, by going to the Abandoned Cave in Caelid. It adds a flat 15 poison to every arrow, so it might save some time when applying poisons, and it is upgraded with somber smithing stones, so that is always a plus.

In my experience since it shoots pretty slow so it's better to just use a shortbow with the barrage ability to get the poison off quickly

It is weird that the stuff you craft isn't as good as the stuff you buy, typically crafting systems allow you to get the best items money can't buy.

If they made every arrow available for infinite purchase once you found the right merchant I’d be more than happy with that, especially if you kill the merchants for their bell bearings

Some of the best arrows (rot, frost, and sleep) cannot be bought, only crafted. The reason the crafted ones do less is because they are essentially free. Early on when you don’t have many runes buying arrows for 120 each isn’t really feasible. The difference between bought and crafter isn’t that drastic anyway. It’s 10 damage more. So you can have free arrows that do just a little less, or spend 1200 runes for 10 arrows. The only bought arrows that are worth buying over your crafted ones are the golden arrows because they dissolve undead enemies when you kill them.

@@Driftingsiax I know what you mean by free but it's technically not free if you have to spend time farming the materials when you could have just done anything else and ended up with runes instead.

@@Driftingsiax they aren’t really free tho. Even early on, the time you would spend to farm runes to buy the bones or to farm the other crafting materials for an elemental type arrow, you can just spend for grinding runes to buy ready arrows. Let’s look at the fire arrows. For them, if I remember correctly, you only need the bones, the red butterflies that you find around fires and feathers. Meanwhile the fire arrows from Carlos you’d need 12K for 100 arrows. Those 12 K you can make in one kill of that bird in the Moghwyn palace. Or just kill the troll in front of Godrick chamber 10 times with a bleed weapon. Really the store bought arrows are a lot cheaper than the crafted ones, because you waste a lot more time gathering materials than you would do runes. And then you have the regular vs bone arrows and idk why non elemental bone arrows even exist. Regular arrows are 20 runes a pop. For 100 arrows you need only 2000 runes. That’s 2 troll kills.

I mean id rather it not be the case, but it does make sense. The crafted arrows are made from thin bones that aren't as arrow dynamic and lack any sort of metal head

Hey! Just wanted to let you know, if you want a lot of flight pinions fast, as well as some four toed fowl feet, the north-west side beach in the Weeping Peninsula is by far the best place. Very comfy place to go right from the start, and gives a lot.

The shattershard arrows act like the alluring skull from past souls games. The noise they make on impact can get enemies attention and lure them towards the noise. Although the value of such an ability is situational at best (luring a far off lower enemy into view to get a clean shot?) and may be subject to the creativity of the person using them.

My preferred farming place for Flight Pinions (and the occasional Stormhawk Feathers) is the Divine Tower of Limgrave. Spawn at the Grace just before you get the Great Rune, take the elevator down, send it back up, use a bow with the Barrage skill, shoot every eagle and Stormhawk you find, then fast travel back to the Grace and repeat. Also, you forgot to mention the best part of the Rainbow Stone Arrows. In PvP, you can make your opponent look like a Christmas tree.

Try the impassable greatbridge grace in caelid. 3 birds with higher drop rate right on the other side of a tree. 5 pinions in about 10 seconds

The shattershard arrows are loud- not silent. You can use them to lure enemies. Also, I haven’t tested this, but the rainbow arrows should only leave behind a glow if they hit somewhere that you can jump to and not die, similar to rainbow stones. This way, you can shoot an arrow to a platform before you leap with torrent. Possibly good for a deathless run

As far as farming the flight pinions for the fletched arrows - the coast of Weeping Peninsula near the 4th Church of Marika is great. There's like 15-20 birds (forgot what they're called) that drop both the flight pinion and the four-toed fowl foot with good consistency. Basically, if you don't get one, you'll get the other. Since the fowl foot is used for the gold/silver pickled fowl foot that increases runes received when killing enemies and increasing discovery (and therefore improving item drop chances) being able to get one of the two (well... three) almost every time is great - you'll have a legit use for any of the drops.

If you're far enough I like the impassable greatbridge grace in caelid. There are 3 birds right on the other side of a tree to use hoarfrost stomp on. You can get about 5 pinions per 10 second run then rest at camp to reset.

In Lingrave, on the way down to beach patrolled by a Troll you have two square ruins, first full of those birds similar to seagulls, and the second one full of eagles. And if you continue to the end of the beach, can find some rocks plenty of seagulls. It's a birdie paradise.

Damn man, I am just about to reach Fire Giant on my bow only run I've been doing casually for the past week, this info woulda been awesome a little sooner! I managed by just maxing out my damage going naked with dancer and arrow talismans to make every arrow count

Have you guys ever noticed that the notorious Mohgwyn Palace bird farm the arrows seem to travel ABSURDLY far before the fall off. I’ve never been able to shoot something near as far away as that bird in other places. Almost makes me wonder more and more about the possibility of it being an intentional farming location by the devs. Like any bow any arrows seem to work as well, it’s weird

The Holy Great Arrows have an AoE effect of Golden Vow equivalent to the weapon art/ash of war in terms of stats.

you can farm the greyoll repeatedly if you use torrent to quickly reset at the site of grace after he dies.

That’s a really good tactic but I think it might be slower than the basic bird farm everyone knows. Depends on how quickly you can kill the dragon dude has so much health, like 100k something nuts

I dont ever do bow only but having status buildup with the pulley crossbow helps with lvl > 60 PvP set up

about the golden great arrow it applies a aoe golden vow effect around where it lands so you can shoot the ground below you or your ash summons or phantoms and you get the golden vow buff without any faith

If you're starting out, i recommend you use fletched fire bone arrows to start. Early on many things are weak to fire such as dogs, bears and even catacomb imps. The miners with the explosives on their backs die to any source of damage immedietly making fire arrows one shot them. The reason fletched is good is because of the range compared to lock-on range. With fletched, if you can lock-on you can land a full dmg hit this is using a shortbow. Flight pinions and smokdering butterflies are not the pain to farm because 1 of these makes 10 so for 99+ arrows a simple 10 flight pinions and 10 smoldering butterflies make 100 arrows. There are 8 smoldering butterflies borth of warmastershack and there are about 15 birds on the beach south of weeping peninsula just before the 2 land octopus. The thin beast bones are a pain because 3 make 10 so for 99+ you need 30 thin bone arrows to make 100 arrows so its a lot of farm compared to a simple 10 for other materials. However, the path in weeping peninsula from the walking mausoleum to the pilgrimage church has about 25-30 goats so 2 runs should get you ~100 arrows. Bloodrose for bloodbone arrows are available early in the game, you can find 4 in fort haight so you need about 2-3 runs for ~100 arrows. For 2 sets of 99 arrows early on i recommend 99 fletched fire arrows and 99 fletcher blood arrows. Do the goat farm about 3 times, the bird farm about twice, the smouldering butterfly 1-2 times and the bloodrose farm about 3 times. That is unfortunately a sum of 10 farms total to completely restock on 2 arrow sets but i believe its a good start until you can buy your arrows.

Kinda interesting that 3 thin beast bones make 10 arrows when that’s not possible unless one bone item makes 3 and a third arrows. Guess we’re supposed to assume the failed attempts make up the difference

I actually like the crafted arrows because they are supereasy to get. In a run where you occasionally use a bow they are perfect as you will never run out of arrows

Stormwing bone arrows also have slightly greater range than all fletched arrows which I find pretty helpful. They also seem to fly faster but I haven’t actually tested that.

Have you noticed the deal with the bird farm in mohgwyn? I swear no where else in game do arrows fly even half that far. Maybe it’s possible you can shoot farther aiming down but that doesn’t really explain why I don’t even have to aim above the bird

The basilisks at lake of rot are actually pretty nice in drop rates... I just go to the first 6 that spawn near the first few raised platforms and its basically atleast 1 drop per run and each runis like 1 to 2 minutes...

I use bows to take out annoying ranged enemies. I usually end up using the merchant bought plain arrows that cost 20 runes each. I try using fire arrows, poison arrows and magic arrows, but they rarely do much more damage, and frequently do less that physical arrows. Why would I spend 100+ runes more per arrow to do maybe 5 more damage, when I can just shoot one extra physical arrow? I understand this may be different for someone doing a bow run, since there are enemies very weak to certain elements. However, against ranged enemies it is rare for the elemental arrows to be worth using. In a game where spells do a lot of damage, and there are many different tactics for taking out bosses, I don't see why bows cannot be a viable alternative. Why make bows weak, dull, and expensive?

Range increases the distance before damage starts to fall off on top of how far a projectile travels before it starts sinking.

@@antmann993There are 20 (St. Trina Arrows) listed as for sale at a merchant in Raya Lucaria. I mean sometimes it’s wrong but it’s probably correct. Might be talking about different merchants or he ran out something like that

I wish the arrows you crafted only used 1 thin beast bone instead of 3. I just have no patience for farming, like, I feel morally insulted when I have to farm things in games, so 3 beast bones is too much. Plus it is ridiculous being some ultra powerful soon-to-be Elden Lord riding around on your immortal spirit steed whacking goats with a God-slaying weapon. I mean, come on man… you should just have an infinite free supply of bones from one of the merchants or some random NPC you do a little quest for. Same for the feathers, of course.

I won’t specify how you find it because I don’t want to spoil a cool cinematic moment, but there is actually a bell bearing you can get that lets you buy bones.

Spawn the bell bearing hunter at the war masters shack by waiting until night and kill him. He'll drop a bell bearing that lets you buy bones. At least I think it's the one at the war masters shack. He appears a few other places and drops random bell bearings. He's a bitch to fight for the higher level stuff though. Extremely annoying. Basically impossible to roll some of his attacks and his range is incredibly far
