Do what Archie did and forget the jumbo, buy a old mid sized one for cheap and then spend thousands getting it serviced

Good advice overall. I have 15202 and love it. The AP tapestry dials are amazing. These watches are a bit fragile. PP is right, the Maserati analogy is a good one----the Maser grille and the AP porthole bezel are similarly iconic.

Did you find one in the end? Ordered a 2007 15300ST Blue dial from a boutique in Italy then its straight off for authenticity check and health check and/or service if it needs it. 15202ST a little to pricey for me and perhaps a little more fragile, also like to have a second hand movement so you can see it’s alive 👍🙏

No, not yet. You know? I have this really young guy at Watch Connection in Costa Mesa trying to hunt one down for me. There was one that came thru with a blue dial, naked, so I passed. He sold me a Yacht Master in 18K YG (Ref. 16628) instead. Ha! Ha! Ha! But I am definitely still looking...it’s my next watch if I can find it. Or else I’ll probably end up getting another Rolex in steel or white gold.

I've had the 15400 for 3 months, never off my wrist, doesn't scratch any more than my deepsea. Service for a 3 hand AP costs between £670-£830. JLC money. The 3120 is very durable.

Agreed. I absolutely concur my 15400 black dial with calibre 3120 is a homerun in my book and I'm a sucker for its display back. Infact terrytown jewelers has a great price for a new piece currently. Service cost runs approximately a grand here in New York. Btw no scratches since xmas, knock on wood.

Surprisingly good advice. That IWC 3227 you have is a better and more reliable watch in almost every conceivable way, but a little too chunky for what the guy was looking for.

that picture of the Royal Oak that you used at the beginning is the 15450... so not the 15400, nor the 15202

I just bought a 15400 new,. Not worth buying used in my opinion as new from US boutique has a 5 year warranty. All dials are great but I ended up with white. Compared to Patek Nautilus RO is a bargain.

A brand new blue dial 15400. They are only 500 cheaper for used. you will 2000 extra for blue, id probably go black dial

Nobody mentions the 14790ST, I have had mine 12 years and no trouble at all... I just don't use AP to get it serviced ^^

My 10 years overhaul of my APROO SS rubber clad came out to over 4 thousand USD. The new rubber bezel was almost 2 thousand USD. I got raped big time.
