Last week, Fred Minnick revealed the Top 25 Best Bourbons Around $40. Today, he takes the top 10 and tastes them live right here. They're all blind. What will be No. 1?
Contenders
Maker’s Mark Cask Strength
Public Ranking: 10
Analysis: This is Maker’s wheated bourbon profile at its best. Fred published a score of 92 in Bourbon Curious. However, this whiskey has not done well in his blind tastings, with Fred noting an over-oaked note at times. But the product is a staple in the Minnick household.
Evan Williams Bottled in Bond
Public Ranking: 9
Analysis: Winner of Fred’s Best Everyday Bourbon in 2019, Evan Williams Bottled in Bond consistently wins over Fred’s palate. Will it return to No. 1?
Old Forester 100 Proof
Public Ranking: 8
Analysis: When writing tasting notes for Bourbon Curious, Fred rated Old Forester 100 an 89, a solid score for an everyday pour. In addition, Brown-Forman bourbons rate well in his blinds with King of Kentucky and Old Forester 1920 winning past taste offs. But those are big proofed bourbons. Will this 100 proofer stand out enough to win?
Old Grand-Dad 114
Public Ranking: 7
Analysis: While Old Grand-Dad 114 is often a fan favorite, it’s not fared well in Fred’s tastings, with past notes calling out raw grain notes. However, Fred loves Old Grand-Dad Bonded. Perhaps, this is the day 114 wins over his palate.
Four Roses Small Batch
Public Ranking: 6
Analysis: If Fred happens to be craving cinnamon before the tasting, Four Roses stands to win. Even if the spice note doesn’t show or impress, this is standard pour at Fred’s corporate tastings. It often beats the allocated products in blinds.
Elijah Craig Small Batch
Public Ranking: 5
Analysis: After Heaven Hill dropped the Elijah Craig 12 year age statement, Fred couldn’t look at a bottle of the latest version. The dude has issues! Anyway, he got over it and once again fell in love with the flavor profile.
Knob Creek
Public Ranking: 4
Analysis: Fred’s been on a Knob Creek bandwagon for a long time, releasing videos that encourage people to buy it over allocated $200 bourbons. It also won Best Bourbon at the 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, where Fred voted for it. Knob Creek does very well with his palate.
Buffalo Trace
Public Ranking: 3
Analysis: When Fred reviewed Buffalo Trace for Whisky Advocate, he scored it an 88, noting a nutmeg note. But that’s been several years, and Buffalo Trace has not won any of his blind tastings. That being said, Buffalo Trace is a wild card if this bottle doesn’t have a particular off-putting oak note.
Wild Turkey 101
Public Ranking: 2
Analysis: Wild Turkey 101 once beat Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year in a Fred blind tasting at Silver Dollar in Louisville. However, when in everyday taste offs, Wild Turkey 101 has been inconsistent, even finishing last before.
Russell’s Reserve 10 Year
Public Ranking: 1
Analysis: The only age stated bourbon in the lineup, Russell’s Reserve 10 year is a throwback to the old days. It’s packing tons of flavor. But five years ago for Whisky Advocate, he detected a bitterness that kept the whiskey from entering the 90-point plus club. If that bitterness appears today, it will most certainly not win.

I think my favorite thing about bourbon is that some of these swing close to really expensive stuff. Im not a man of means but i never feel deprived for choices, really. Id love to try some stuff i havent but theres enough variety amongst cheaper bourbons that i never get bored. Thanks Fred.

Man...i really love how you are not swayed by proof. So many people and channels are placing too much emphasis on proof rather than favor and complexity. I'm really trying to incorporate this objective mindset into my tastings. People need to realize that proof is not the end all be all. There are many variables to tastings. Thanks again for allowing us to benefit from your expertise sir.

Ugh yeah, to an extent! However, there are always other variables to judging a clear winner. Such as finish, mouthfeel, depth of flavor, as well as other factors. I'm not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, but I certainly do not feel as though the best whiskey is only available in barrel-proof. I admire Fred's judgment because he never places bourbons in a certain proof category.@@lordgarth1

Love this format and having the question breaks as well as the on screen aids. My favorite part was the preview snippets, and it may be too much but I wouldn’t mind seeing those quotes up during tastings! could be cool but may just be me :)

The fact that 90 proof Russell's finished second in a blind against higher proofs , is a testimony to how good it is . OGD 114 is getting very hard to find on my area . I buy it every time I find it , usually about twice a year .😭 All ten choices are solid picks .🥃👍

Excellent Review! I really appreciate your breakdown for your judgment on each. You make a great point about subjectivity vs criteria. I tend to fall toward subjectivity unless there is a clear difference in possible quality. All of our palates vary so I think you were as fair as possible with this review. I wish Early Times would have made the list, and I also would have chosen EW 1783 over the BiB. Nevertheless, here is my order of preference: OGD114 OF100 KC9yr RR10yr FR SmB

Great video. Love OGD 114 and glad to see it fare at the top. Also a huge fan of OF100 and thought coming in it would be the top pick, but #4 isn't bad. Admittedly, I have always been in the minority on RR10. I have had it several times, and I cannot pinpoint what is off-putting about it to me, but I have never cared for it. I really like RR SiB and think it is excellent, but the standard RR10 never hits it with me. Congrats to OGD114 ... a personal favorite and now I am sure I will never find it again :-)

Honestly, there are no losers in this bracket. I have every one of these on the shelf and they are all solid. If you started a collection with these 10 bottles, you'd bed light years ahead of many people chasing allocated BS

Loved the video. OGD BiB is one of my go tos, so I picked up an OGD 114 last week. Will open it as soon as I finish the Rebel Yell 100 I have open. Been buying a lot of Old Forester 100 recently too, and WT 101.

For your pallet, I was picking Russell's Reserve, Knob Creek and Old Granddad, with #2 & #3 interchangeable. Old Granddad is definitely my favorite of the three, but it's inconsistent, with the bottles I've had. You mentioned another bottle that was similar in it's inconsistency, sorry I don't remember what it is right now. It's one of the bottles that gets drunk fastest on my shelf, unless it's one of the funky ones. At that point, you have to be in the mood for the funk. Great entertainment! You do a great job, Fred. Been watching for 2-3 years at this point. Thank you for your insight and introduction to some aspects of the industry I wouldn't even know about. Cheers!

Hello Fred - you've now got a fan from over the pond that loves single malt whisky but has now discovered the pleasures of bourbon. My baptism way back in the 80s was JD (I was young and liked my beer back then); fast forward to my 2nd yr in retirement and wow.....I took a punt on Bulleit Kentucky Straight and I guess I'm hooked. Looking forward now to a bourbon journey of a different kind, so I'm soaking up reviews like a sponge. Great blind taste bud - I'll be back 😃👍.

Loved the video, you definitely sped up once you had a bunch of tastes which makes sense. The NCAA is a joke, no chance I let my kids watch bourbon videos, I bet if you did it over again even a month later, there would be a different finish. I'm a newbie, but it seems almost every taste for me can be different. Love this journey.

I watched this whole thing and I only drink every other new years lol. Back in the day though we used to get Kentucky Spirit made by wild turkey and sold Thanksgiving-Christmas where we lived and it was so much smoother than the wild turkey that I normally chose when stepping up from beer.

I liked the way you talked through the top 4 ranking, and the difficulty you had in maybe liking one more than the others, but based on your process and criteria, it won’t win. Key learning is that not to get hung up on buying just ‘ the one’, but those top few that were all contenders and rotate through them based on what you want that day. We should all be happy knowing that there are 5 strong (I’m throwing 4 Roses Small Batch in there) readily available awesome bourbons at $40 and under. I’d add in BT but for my area of the country, I see a bottle every 6 months. This was a very enjoyable and interesting video.

Buffalo Trace is also allocated here in Indiana and my neighboring Ohio. Last year I could find Buffalo Trace on the shelf everywhere. This year it's behind the counter if they even have it. Kinda ridiculous in my opinion.

I wish Russell's Reserve 10 was bottled at 100 proof or higher. It would probably be the winner then. But I guess it would probably be $50 or more then too. Rare Breed just jumped to $60 by me.

Fred, you've spoken often about how you like the KC9. For some reason, it just tastes like dirt to me. However, I've only tasted it from the single bottle I've bought. Could I have a bad bottle? My two best friends both think it tastes awful also. What am I missing with that bourbon? I'll at least try it from a different bottle just in case.

You are a real turkey, Minnick! OGD 114 has been very easily available until now, you are hurting us, making it very hard to find. My local stores still have a tag on the shelf and it is priced at $20 but all the bottles of OGD 114 are gone. Well I did find one today that had six bottles on the shelf at $23 each so I was able to stock up. I thought you were a friend of bourbon drinkers but you are ruining it for us by pointing out what a great value OGD 114 is. You have earned the title ... TURKEY!!

I love oak flavor as long as it is the toasted oak or the fresh fragrant oak. Some of the older whiskies that have the funky musty oak (Dickel 15) are super unpleasant to me. I get a little of that with RR 10 and Bulleit 10. I wonder if it has to do with how damp or dry the warehouse is. I’m sure Fred knows.

I have that Evan Williams bib and that stuff is engine cleaner. I can make an old fashioned out of it, but id rather have OGD any day of the week over Evan. In fact, for me, OGD should be much higher and Evan belongs on the bottom.

I would love to see how this would be different with a single barrel of Russel 's. They're super available, comparable proof to ogd and are in the price point. Also the lack of chill filtration should help with the finish.

I like this Fred Minnick guys reviews....does he only rate bourbons? I'm more of a fan of scotch and Irish whiskeys. Bourbons all have the same taste in the background that I don't care for very much.....I guess it's the corn in the mash bill of bourbon because every one I've tried has the same taste going on.

@@chipgar63 I actually find OGD 114 just a bit too high in proof so my remedy is to mix it 30-70 with the bonded OGD at 100 proof. So I end up with a nice sipper at about 104 proof.

Eagle rare being allocated I can find in lots of places here in Australia but lots of your non allocated stuff I can't find or price is high for example EC small batch is 80+ .wild turkey 101 70+ .but thanks for the video good to see what things are actually worth like Russell's 10 I picked up for 70 here which was the closest to your prices in the u.s.a. .oh glass E four roses small batch I seen for 130 ..is it worth that to you?I know currency diffence taxes..ect .at the moment I'm goin' for the wild turkey 13 Distiller's Reserve instead for 120 .but fear of missing out I wanna pay to try these other things but logically you know it's not worth the money..eg,right now I wanna go get a George Remus..that may be cheap for you but it's 100 here which a eagle rare is cheaper .what would you rather.would you pay that cause it's the only bottle I have seen here?.curious of this MGP profile

Fred, I’m not familiar with the phrase “well” I gather thats a house brand, but is there more to that? Also is there a website that states what brands or expressions are available in each state. Thanks!

hey, mitch! so, a "well" brand is one that the bartender has in the area of the bar they call the well. it's where the spirits on the cocktail menu usually reside and the staple products used for something to mix with a coke or something like that. as for your other question, it's a distribution one that changes monthly if not weekly. One day, Weller is in North Carolina. The next week it is not. it's too complicated here, but to my knowledge a website like that does not exist. your best bet is a search portal like drizly that covers a lot of territory. thanks for asking great questions

Every person has different palate, so can’t just say this n that about the result. It’s Fred’s list as blind taste. Mine would be top 5 : E craig SB, knob creek, WT 101, OGD 114, MM cask strength. I luv oak, funk and medium sweetness in whiskey.

Just watched the lineup preview and see it mentioned that Russell's Reserve 10 yr old is the only age stated bourbon in the lineup. But then I see Knob Creek 9 year old is in the lineup. 🤷

Really thought MM cask strength would rank better. I love it. I really do like the OGD114 and RR10 yr. Funny that OGD114 is becoming allocated in some areas.

Had some Russels Reserve SiB while watching. It's out of this competitions price range but I think the 110 proof with the age and complexity of the RR 10 year would put it on top. But when the name of the game is value it's hard to beat the OGD 114. Interesting that Fred has not scored it as well in the past.

I think it's interesting Buffalo Trace only has 1 product that qualifies. I can't believe it was ranked in the top 10. Buffalo Trace whiskey is not good. I've had at least 5-6 bottles of it. I know me and most of my friends have given up on Buffalo Trace Distillery. After seeing their products and feeling almost obligated to buy them due to scarcity, I ended up disappointed more often than not. I no longer purchase their products even if it's on the shelf reasonably priced. I leave it for poor souls still buying into the hype. Let's be real it's hype. Their products are good but they're not the bar for excellence. I just can't support a business that can't or refuses to meet the demands of customers. Why don't they meet demand? Are they not capable of meeting demand or is it some bullshit marketing ploy. I'll take the Wild Turkey. I can find all their products without a headache and a stupid high price tag. Russell's Reserve is better than anything Buffalo Trace makes anyway. Sorry BT, as a consumer of fine whiskey for over 30 years, you've left a bad taste in my mouth one too many times.

@@FredMinnick haha, I was yelling the screen! Curious, new to Bourbon and love it. Does the proof of the OGD 114 help it finish stronger than the RR (which I love)? Maybe a naive question but does testing like proofs together help with a newbie to notice the differences, and eliminating one of the variables? Great vid. Newly subscribed.

disappointed. detailed, calculated, organized until the very end, then its messy sloppy not clear how the bourbons ranked. like running a marathon and then tripping at the 26 mile mark and not finishing. do this over properly. like running the football from side of the field to the other only to fumble at the end. wasted a full hour and 20 minutes.
