This weekend we go backcountry camping in the Enchantments for 4 nights/ 5 days! The Enchantments sit within the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in the Central Cascades Region of Washington State. This area is a pristine alpine wonderland with crystal blue lakes and rugged mountain peaks.
We hike the Enchantments thru-hike which is a 21 mile point to point hike and a permit is required for overnight camping in the area between May 15 through October 31 each year. The permit process is extremely competitive and we get SO LUCKY to snag a permit for the Core Enchantments Zone. The Enchantments Permit Area consists of 5 zones and the Core Zone is not only the most popular area, but it is the only permit that allows you to camp in any of the 5 zones.
This vlog is part 1 of a 2 part series of our unforgettable experience in this truly incredible place.
Day 1
We get started at the Snow Lakes Trailhead around 1:30PM. Since this is a point to point hike and we don’t have 2 cars, we book a one way shuttle through Leavenworth Shuttle & Taxi for $25 per person. We leave our car at the Snow Lakes Trailhead where we’ll be finishing the hike and ride about 30 minutes to the Stuart Lake Trailhead to get started.
Today we hike roughly 4 miles with 2,000 feet of elevation gain to Colchuck Lake where we plan to camp for the night. It is supposed to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the Enchantments and is a really popular out and back day trip.
The hike is more difficult than we both would like to admit, mainly because of the weight of our backpacks. We have never been backcountry camping for this many nights before and we are bringing quite a bit more food than our previous camping trips. This does have us a little worried for what is coming tomorrow, the infamous Aasgard Pass.
After roughly 3 hours, we make it to Colchuck Lake around 4:30 PM. We take a quick break to enjoy the breathtakingly beautiful view of the lake. It is a bit hazy from wildfire smoke but the lake is still an unbelievable blue color and the mountains surrounding it are so impressive.
We make our way around the lake a bit in search for our campsite for the night. Most of them are taken at this point but we find a great spot by a small pond, just off the lake. We get our camp set up, have dinner and then turn in for the night in anticipation for what is to come tomorrow!
Day 2
Today is a big day… we have the big trek up Aasgard Pass in front of us. This section of the hike is around 2,200 feet of elevation gain in 3/4 of a mile. It is incredibly steep and probably the most intense part of the whole hike.
We enjoy breakfast and get everything packed up. We hit the trail around 10 AM and finish making our way around Colchuck Lake. We make our way out of the trees and have to cross a boulder field at the South side of the lake before we make it to the base of Aasgard Pass. From the base of the pass, it seems to be an impossible task to ascend a path so steep. After a short pause and slight hesitation, we start making our way up.
It is VERY slow going and at times, it seems like we are boulder hopping rather than following any well defined trail. Slowly but surely, putting one foot in front of the other, we make progress up what has to be the steepest trail we have ever climbed. Each time we look behind us, Colchuck Lake appears smaller and smaller.
Finally, after 2.5 hours, we reach the top of the pass. We sit at 7,800 feet in elevation which is the highest point on the trail. We feel extremely accomplished and enjoy one final view down on Colchuck Lake before continuing into the Core Enchantment Zone.
The lake disappears from our view entirely and it really feels like we enter into another world. The Upper Enchantments is a surreal landscape of glacier carved granite and lakes surrounded by ragged, knife-edged mountains.
We make it to Isolation Lake which is the first lake in the Upper Basin Area and we find a perfect, secluded spot to set up our camp. We get everything set up, have lunch and then explore the area a bit in the afternoon. We then head back to the top of the pass and find an amazing spot to post up for dinner and sunset. We watch as the sky puts on a show as the sun goes down.. it really is the perfect way to end the day!
We head back to camp to call it a night. We have only just begun to scratch the surface in the Core Enchantment Zone and are so excited for what is to come next!

My wife and I have been watching your videos for a few weeks now, as we just discovered your channel. We don't spend a lot of time watching KZfaq, but when we're relaxing in the evening, quite often we find ourselves on your channel. It's easy for an hour or more to slip by. What a wonderful body of work so far - KEEP IT UP! We're in our 60s now (lord!) and only wish we had done even just half of what you two are doing (while we were younger)! We can't really do the hike-in-camping anymore, but absolutely love to do day hikes. Our hiking/camping play ground is in the Mt. Adams wilderness. Your videos show us MANY new places to go within reach in our region - and we will! We CONTINUALLY here ourselves saying; "HEY - We need to go there, we need to do that!" We're not social media types, and very rarely comment on videos, but this morning we're just compelled, seeing the low views on apparently all of your videos (so far). We don't completely understand that, as your videos are really appealing, as they have a more 'reachable theme' than many other video channels out there. Please know that your videos are truly wonderful to watch -honestly! They are very well done, at times breath taking, beautiful, obviously took great effort (wow), care and TALENT to film (video), then edit and produce here on KZfaq. The choice in background music and very informative commentary are also spot-on and fitting. We THANK YOU very much for the wonderful videos and salute your obvious courage and sense of adventure. They have certainly made several dull winter evenings a real treat indeed, especially with a hot buttered rum, ha.. We've focused mainly on videos of the West and Northwest region, plus Glacier and Yellow stone...etc.. Just wonderful. We live in SW Washington near the Columbia Gorge. We would recommend that you someday travel to the NW corner of Oregon to Joseph Or, Wallowa Lake, and the Eagle Cap wilderness. >> These comments apply to ALL the videos we've viewed thus far, which appears to be roughly 50%. Apparent low viewership has NOTHING at all to do with your videos, they are great. Your channel is simply young, and the topic may be appealing to a limited sect of the population. Given the competition on KZfaq, you're doing fine. "You have our heartfelt thanks, truly!"

@@WaypointofView > We will be sure to keep watching your channel. Your un-stoppable smiles and can-do attitude is very refreshing! We just started viewing your travel through-out the Philippines, and that whole region. Beautiful videos thus far, like all the rest. You two are indeed quite adventurous! Keep it up you two, stay safe and healthy.

I hope to do a lot of backpacking now that I retired. The pack makes a difference when climbing a mountain. The ramen bomb sounds filling. I like instant potatoes! The hammocks are a nice way to chill at camp. Trekking poles really help over boulders if you are not scrambling. Hiking on uneven rocky trails is hard on the feet. A good firm insole is a lifesaver.

So hoping to score a permit this year. I hiked this back in the mid 70's when permits were not required and very few people hiked and even fewer went there. Happy you got to enjoy that area it really is a gem.

Fingers crossed you get the permit! Very cool you got to hike there before it became so popular though! We were amazed by all the people doing it as a day hike... that hike was no joke!!

My husband and I came upon your channel and are having so much fun watching you! You are so fun and inspiring. We are preparing to retire and want to travel and explore , you are giving us such great ideas. I would love to see a video with you both sharing a bit on how you got started on this grand adventure. What inspired you? How did you prepare? What did you do before? How do you fund all your traveling? What tips would you give for anyone wanting to do something similiar? What are your future plans? Oh and ... what are your ages? ;) Thanks for sharing and being an inspiration.

Thank you so much Jennifer!!! We are so glad you found us and really appreciate the kind words and great questions! We really do need to do a video addressing this stuff! But in the meantime, I can answer a little bit here! ☺️.. We are 33 / 34... I (Jessica) was an insurance broker for 10 years before we left to travel and Myles was in marketing for a medical company. We saved and saved for 5 + years... sold our house, one of our cars, put all of our stuff in storage and went for it! We currently don't really make any money so our savings are what funds our travels. We took the leap in 2019 with the plan of traveling internationally for 2 years and obviously a lot has changed due to COVID. While it might be a little early, we are so excited because we actually have our first international flight booked for 2021... in 3 days! 🤗😳🤗😳. Packing as we speak actually! As far as tips/ suggestions/ preparation... I can get into more details on that than you would probably ever want but the biggest thing I would say, if this is something you are passionate about... book the flight!!!!! 😍😍 In all seriousness, I am happy to answer specific questions/ go into a lot more detail if you want to email us (Waypointofview@gmail.com). Thanks again for the advice on the video, we definitely need to do something like that!
