@@islerenner Were you a complete beginner besides maybe a MSF class to get licensed? Im practicing on a friend’s Z650 as a complete newb, and want the mt07 for a first bike. But I’m a bit worried the throttle would be too jerky.
@islerenner
@islerenner 4 ай бұрын
@@lizbelli8287 Fair questions my friend. Long story short, I grew up as the passenger on a Honda Goldwing. I toured with my step father as a member of the GWRRA (Goldwing Road Riders Association) all over Canada and some parts of the USA helping him teach safe rider courses, slow speed maneuvering, threshold breaking etc. Between the ages of around 8 and I'd say...18, we probably accumulated around 250,000 kms. Aside from my decade of experience as a passenger, I had nothing else. No dirtbikes, no trikes, no ATV's. I rode mountain bikes all my life but that's it. So, the MT-07. My very first motorized bike. I absolutely love it. I decided that I was going to make it happen at all costs. I was diagnosed with Degenerative disk disease about 15 years ago and suffer daily with nerve damage and severe chronic pain. This made learning to ride at all, seem crazy. I managed to get out a few times before parking it for the winter and I have to say that the throttle never scared me, keeping in mind I never tempted the devil either. I treated the bike with a lot of respect and the experience was out of this world. The power is there but with some self control, it's very manageable. I suppose you could say I had a lot of motivation to behave. I take extremely good care of my belongings and of course didn't want to hurt the bike, it is perfect. Which made being careful super easy. I also didn't want my riding to be the cause of an accident as it would hurt A LOT to come off the bike, considering I can barely walk for an hour a day on a good day. Anyway, yeah...total newb. Saved up, took the 15min computer test at the license center and got my learners. Waiting on my MST now. Be safe, make good decisions and enjoy the ride my friend.

@@lizbelli8287 I drove a MT-125 for a year, I upgraded to the MT-07 recently.... The 125ccm feels like a tricycle in comparison. Holy crap, you have to start carefully. That low rev pull is really something else. It feel lite, it feels really great riding it, even on the way home from the dealership. You really have to be careful with the throttle thou, exiting the town getting on a decent road, it would take me litterally 3 seconds to forever loose my drivers licence, in 2nd gear. That thing will litterly pull you hair back. It is not hard to drive slowly thou, it feels very comfortable.

@@sventreffinger3027 Thanks for your insight! I actually bought a new cb650r (the naked bike, not the cbr). It’s a torquey bike, but at higher rpms when compared to the mt07. So it is probably a bit more forgiving for someone so new, like me. I have been riding it for about a month and I am really enjoying it.

bro, this is a great piece of content. I'm 6'3, just got my L's and I'm currently deep in the duke vs mt07 dilemma. This was a super informative. The mt07 is the clear winner across almost every metric but Im still leaning towards the duke due its more accessible price point. Probs get the duke, smashing it around for a while then step it up to the mt in the due course. really nice work on your first video! super slick! I agree with you, starting on a 650cc class bike for someone who is mature is the way to go. I played it safe and bought a smaller bike which within the first 3 months you are looking at upgrading. Three years ago I bought a 390 Duke, then two months later, I bought an MT-07. I had no prior riding experience. Both bikes are amazing, but if I could only buy one, I would pick the MT-07. Head-to-head, I feel that the MT-07 has the greater range for rider growth, and it is a better freeway commuter(I commute heavily in California traffic). Having said that, my opinion is that the 390 Duke is the better ‘from scratch newbie bike.’

As someone who grew up riding dirt bikes, the first time i rode a mt07 (was the first "big" bike I'd ridden) when doing my test to get my full licence, i was surprised at how heavy it felt and how hard it was to turn at slow speed (compared to what i was used to) and it actually left me questioning whether i wanted to get a bike. Light and nimble was definitely not what i would've described it as. However i do realise that it is all relative. Compared to bigger, heavier bikes it is a light and nimble bike. Compared to dirt bikes that weigh 50kg less and have narrower tyres it feels heavy. Regarding insurance for derestricting, i think in the case of an accident where you weren't at fault your insurance company wouldn't care too much as the modification hasn't contributed to the accident. If you're the one at fault then it may be a different story and may depend on the type of accident. If it's high speed then you're probably in trouble, however if speed isn't a factor then you might get away with it.

It would certainly feel heavy compared to a dirtbike! Since learning how to ride, I've ridden a dirt bike around an industrial area and they are much lighter but what makes the biggest difference is where the weight is on the bike and the position your in when on the bike. Compared to a full fairings bike where the weight is up front and your weight is on the front due to posture, the MT07 feels very nible as there is barely any weight in front of you and your upright. That and having wider grip geometry means you have more torque on the bars and need less effort moving the front end. It's a bit hard to explain but even sitting on the street triple s and then straight onto the MT07, the MT07 felt way lighter just due to where the weight is on the bike. I would agree that your insurer wouldn't care if you were in the right but I believe the other person's insurance company would want to check the bike to see if they can get out of paying. It's what happened to a friend of mine at least

The MT-07 was my first bike and a WR250R was my second bike. The MT does feel heavy in comparison. Butttt, go ride a liter bike or a 636 or a Harley. Then hop back on the MT and you immediately fall in love with how light and flickable it is.

As someone who is challenged in the height department. This bike too me seems like a adv bike. Quite intimidating. Always worried about coming to a stop light and wondering if I can balance the bike properly at a full stop, without dropping it. Although it's classed as a light weight bike it still feels top heavy. Anyway I have had mine for 5 years and dropped it 4 times. Had one accident on it. When a lorry went through a red light. But I'm still learning on it., respect the power and take as much bike training as possible. Don't be over confident because that curve you take may be your very last........

This bike is an absolute blast. It reminds me of a supermoto, but with more comfort and smoother speed and it’s faster. It gets 55/60mpg. It WILL power wheelie 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. It sounds like a damn Ducati. It’s ridiculously reliable. My only major complaints are fairly shitty suspension. Adjustable would be nice. And the oil pan is very very easy to damage. I just wish the new MT-07 headlight would fit the old FZ

Nice vid bro. I also looked into the exhaust mod for my R7 LAMS. in short... the Akrapovic has reduced your TARE weight (by something like 3kgs) and increased your power by 1 - 1.5 kw which I understand is in breach of maintaining LAMS compliance. The increase in power, when combined with the reduction in TARE weight may also put the MT07 over the 150kw per tonne LAMS restriction - so all these factors may impact your insurance should something happen. Anyway, just commenting on this issue as you put some focus on insurance and legalities with regard to de-restricting LAMS bikes. FROM NSW Government LAMS Documentation. Minor modifications A learner approved motorcycle that is modified by incorporating optional components offered by its manufacturer, or otherwise modified so that it continues to comply with the manufacturer’s specifications is allowed, so long as it does not increase the power output of the motorcycle, nor reduce the tare weight of the motorcycle.
@kurtsvision5428
@kurtsvision5428 Жыл бұрын
That's a great point to raise, when I purchased the bike, the Yamaha dealer installed the exhaust as a factory modification and then lodged it with the insurance company. Simply put, one invoice to me, 3 services ticked off (buying the bike, purchase and install of exhaust and insurance done) QBE (my insurer) know I'm a learner and have the exhaust installed and they don't seem to have any issues, however I will say that maybe, just maybe, I'm lucky here.. but I have records that my policy includes the exhaust.

@@kurtsvision5428 yeah it's complex and a good discussion, so many people do it... people need to be aware that retailers have little responsibility when a modification / upgrade is made at the request of a customer. And insurance companies only assess vehicles for compliance (and rider compliance) after an accident, not when selling an insurance policy. I went through a similar exercise with regards to modifying and registering my 73 HQ holden last year, everything falls back to the registered owner - not the workshop, mechanic or technician who did the work. QBE PDS states the following - This product is designed for owners of a registered motorcycle: who require cover for: • accidental loss of or damage to their bike; and/or • damage caused to another person’s car or property due to the use of their own bike, if they are found to be legally liable for the damage that meets the registration requirements in their State or Territory. I would love to be corrected here that an Akra exhaust doesn't impact LAMS compliance / insurance for restricted riders - I'm going to give QBE a call - if so I'll probably go straight out and get an Akra installed on my bike too.

@@kurtsvision5428 OK so I spoke to QBE and this is what I got. Essentially any bike modifications that deviate from what your licence conditions (ie LAMS) require can affect your insurance. I asked if an exhaust mod that increases power by just 1 kw and reduces TARE weight is an issue and they said yes - and kindly directed me to page 21 of the PDS for the exclusions section. The fact is, and this was implied by the person on the phone, is that they don't check your insurance application for compliance when you buy the policy, even if you list an exhaust mod, Insurance companies will only review your policy when it comes time to assess a claim. They kindly recommended me not to make any modifications if I'm on a restricted licence. It all gets back to the NSW Gov LAMS text I pasted in my first message. LAMS approvals are all based on standard factory bike specifications, not including dealer fit accessories such as exhausts - and the responsibility of compliance falls squarely on the registered owner. I did up a dummy quote, listed a $2000 exhaust modification and I was able to complete the insurance application right up to the payment section as a test - so they will quite happily take your money. People need to know what they might be risking by doing these mods while on LAMS restrictions - it would probably make a good video given so many LAMS bikes are modified. The fun police win as far as I'm concerned - I'll just wait until I'm off my P's.

@@kurtsvision5428 Nice Vid, mate. As for QBE if you have any claims against you or by your that is when you may find your illegality will come back to bite you. You should confirm with QBE that your power to weight ratio is in breach of legal standards. Only when you tell them that [and that is your obligation] can you sleep easy. As with all insurance providers they are wonderful until they are not! The advice about smaller bikes for getting your skills up to scratch is sound advice. Hang on to your MT07 and buy a small 125 to hone your skills practising all the manoeuvres until you have then nailed. Then, after passing your 'Advanced' you should continue those practice sessions and make them something you always do as a rider. As for using a bicycle to get your skills pin perfect many top level riders do that. I have the MT in Storm Cyan. It is a beautiful wheelie-machine! Stay safe mate - it is dangerous out there.

Hi great vid, i live in Australia and i am about to get my first bike with no riding experience (other than a mountain bike) . Would you say this is right for someone like me?, i know you mentioned you would become a better rider starting on a slower bike then moving up as a beginner, its just i would rather have a bike that i can learn on and keep for a very long time and not have to spend more down the line. I was tossing up between this, the KTM 390 or the Husqvarna svartpilen 401, the MT07 does appeal to me more however.

Got the 2022 mt07 as my 1st bike too. Had it for about 6 weeks and love it. Ps. I'm 6"4 too and it does get lost a bit under me. One question: do you get chain rattle sounds on engine brake? Mine does and I'm not sure if it's a normal thing. Still breaking in the engine (450km to go till the 1st service). Oh and since you're a newbie like me, be extra careful for gravel and wet surfaces. The rear slides out very easily 😅

Nice!! In the "break in / first 1000km" time I found my chain to rattle heaps as well. I have been told this is when the chain stretches the most and so when you get it serviced, either yourself or your mechanic will need to re-tension your chain to be in spec again. I've almost binned it twice going from a very comfortable clean asphalt road to a loose dusty gravel road at speed.. not nice in the slightest. That and hitting a puddle mid-roundabout and twitching the throttle. It all comes down to experience and just learning from each time your out riding.

"You'll learn or be a better rider, faster on a slower bike". Been riding for 20 years and lemme tell you, pushing your own limits on a slower bike translates really well when you ride a bigger/faster bike.. It gives you an idea or intuition of the relative power and speed of different bike classes from 150cc - 250cc - 400cc - 600cc - 1000cc and how to ride those classes relatively quickly since you already have an idea of your own limits.. In short, if you're confident riding a 150cc at 130kph while pushing the limits, then you will be confident riding a 1000cc at 250+kph while learning it..

Nice review, forget about upgrading the suspension in the short term, the stock suspension definitely isn't the limiting factor at the moment. Go book yourself in for lvl 1 super bike school, absolute best upgrade you can do, and you're at the perfect stage / experience level to do it now (riding long enough to have good basic control of the bike but not long enough to have to unlearn bad habits) seriously should be mandatory for all riders. Also does that TS5 tail bag fit a spare visor or is it too small?
