Came up with the same method of having two chains too, makes the whole process so much better for hot waxing... Jfi, bikers call the chain ring and rear cog just sprockets...no reason to call something which it isn’t

Barnes, Its been a while since I did that video. I probably called them by the name the manufacturer uses, for automotive videos, I often state the proper (manufacturer/OEM) name and the common name. This helps when you are buying parts, to ensure you are buying the right part. I appreciate the feedback! - Stiles

I discovered that nothing else beats fine powdered graphite for lubricating! purposes and its low in price. It has to mix easily into the candlewax. If you rubbing it between your fingers they have to look like they are made from metal, it makes a dark glossy metallic shine. I put the Candle and a few spoons wax into a plastic bag, heat it in hot water and work the chain in it. The best thing is that the graphite repels water, so your chain stays dry and wont rust. Project Farm did very conclusive tests on graphite additives.

Suesses, I like the idea of Graphite! I will try it this summer. Of course the nice thing about PTFE and Wax is if you touch it, it doesn't get you dirty like oil or other wet lubricants do. And, Graphite if you touch it is dirty. If it lubricate better (which I think it would) and if it doesn't attract road gravel and dirt, it may be the Lube for me! I appreciate the comment! - Stiles

@@StilesAutomotive The grey color is only a problem if you wear white trousers which touch the chain, it will get grey. Tested with handchief. For me its really no problem, but i also dont like the mess which oil makes. Important note, use the finest powdered graphite you can find. I have very fine dust, if you use coarser graphite it could be that it doesnt work well or it acts as an abrasive. I have also graphite for locks, you put it into your lock to lubricate, but in the same time it has to be bone dry, because it does not work if oil is in the lock. This works very good for locks, i tested it. This lock graphite is like powder, it has shiny little particles if you get it on your hands, if you war a headlamb. The other lubricating graphite i used for my wax is like inc, it makes your fingers black and shiny instantly as soon as you get it onto your fingers, the lock graphite you have to rub between your fingers in order to get them black. I think the lock graphite would be to coarse to work. I found 4 micron graphite online, this is the finest i found. But i have already fine graphite but i dont know how fine it is its measured "Fuchs Graphite Powder F" it says "chemical resistant, high load bearing capacity under low friction, good affinity to metal surfaces at different temperatures, improves friction properties, economical" "very fine natural graphite powder with highest purity" Good luck, i will never go back to oil or grease.

What makes you think is is better than PTFE or molybdenum disulfide?

Insane to mix PTFE Powder without any Mask. These ultra fine particles are pretty unhealthy....

FW, Good point, and if you should wear a Mask working with a Powder, you should wear Gloves, or at else wash you Hands prior to touching your face. I appreciate the comment! - Stiles

Can honeycomb wax be used instead of paraffin?
@StilesAutomotive

Losif, Probably, Paraffin Wax may have a slightly higher melting temperature, which would make it more desirable. But, I think the real lubricating agent is the PTFE (Teflon), the Wax gets it in there and holds it in place. If you have an abundance of free Bee's Wax, I would try it. You know, Bee's Wax is the recommended Cutting Fluid for drilling or cutting Hard Stainless Steels (recommended by Old Timer Machinists). Let me know how it goes! - Stiles

Ptfe is expensive for me as a student 😅 but i want to try this wax chain. Can I use only melted wax candle? That is the only thing I can afford for now

James, Dude, You're breaking my heart, I know what it is to be a poor student, but the PTFE Dry Lube Powder, I list in the video description (also see link below), is around $20, and will last you for several years. Really, the PTFE is the Lubricant the Wax is the Binder that holds the PTFE in place. Sure the Wax has some lubricating properties, but not much and I wouldn't run it without the PTFE. - Stiles Teflon, Virgin PTFE Dry Lubricant Powder, 3.5 OZ (100 g) 1.6 Micron Particle Size, amzn.to/3gGgYlj

Chains sitting in gas for days will make it brittle
@nigelnightmare4160

🤣🤣🤣🤣 You do know what chain lube is made from don't you? Hint: Petroleum. Petrol/gas does not make steel brittle to any significant degree, if it did Internal Combustion Engines would self destruct. Please make sure Your brain is switched on before engaging mouth, or in this case fingers.

Vital, Yep like Nigel commented below, Gasoline and Petroleum Products do not make Steel brittle. It's weird your You Tube Channel title is "vitalbikechains" and this is very basis metallurgy. The properties of Steel are affected by the materials you add to the Iron while molten, (like carbon, nickle, chromium, etc.) and the heat & cooling process. As a note: This is my very first "Thumbs Down" on a comment! - Stiles

Not true. Gasoline is a petroleum hydrocarbon which does not cause embrittlement. Chlorinated hydrocarbons like Chlorinated brake cleaner will cause embrittlement.

You forgot one ingredient which is the paraffin lamp oil that prevents the chain to get hard when it cools off. Watch Ozy video. Ozy is a guy from Australia and his formula is Paraffin (candles) + paraffin Lamp oil (liquid paraffin used as fuel to camp lights) + PTFE. Perfect formula and your chain does not get hard at the end........... Over here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms99q6mop5yrcoU.html

M, Yep he is good, I do like my idea of using a piece of Wire Coat Hanger, I use Hooks, Z-hooks and C-hooks that I have made from Wire Coat Hangers for painting Car Parts. You can hang the Parts from a hole in the Part and not impact the coatings. He did mention Graphite, I wondered about using it. I think it would be a great lubricant, but maybe messy-er. He just ran the stiff Chain over a Broom Handle or his thumb. Oz added Paraffin Oil for wet conditions. With the Oil does the Chain collect more dirt in dry conditions? I appreciate the comment! - Stiles
