Just my opinion on advice to someone who's new on wet shaving as far as what blades to get... by the way I referred to one of my razors has the Merkur futur however it is not it is a clone I forgot to throw that in there I don't want to try to pass it off on something that it is not. It works awesome and I love that razor but it is not the actual Futur it is a clone... having said that it's one of the best razors I have ever tried and I'll be reviewing it soon.

Good advice about keeping the sample blades. I’m new to DE shaving, about 4 weeks, and am currently working through a sample pack. I’ve written notes about each brand with the results of the first, second and third shaves, looking for my “Goldilocks” blade. Until I saw your video my plan was just to use up the remaining blades after finding the one I liked best, but now I totally see the merit of keeping the rest based on matching the characteristics to the job in hand, and my notes will help as a reminder later on. Thanks for the suggestion.

Ohhh that's actually really smart that no one else has mentioned. Everyone boasts of how traditional shaving allows for a tailored shave but I don't think anyone else has framed it as dynamic and situational - that you can constantly switch blades depending on sensitivity and time pressure.

PurushaDesa that's how it works for me, different blades different razors for different situations I mean you can get away with probably one razor and one blade and get a decent shave every single time but if you want to do certain things in certain situations well that's where the real fun begins and you can buy all kinds of stuff LOL

Great advice. One might try a blade, hate it, and be tempted to get rid of it. But, it might turn out to be the best blade for the next razor added to the collection. And different blade/razor combinations work for different people. At the moment, ВОСХОД blades are my daily blades, and are working well for me. I'm just getting back into DE shaving, and need to go back through some sampler pack blades I got long ago. At this point I can't remember how most of them performed, and I have a new razor to try them in.

My go to head shave blade is a Ted Pella SE in a vintage ever ready shove head BBS every time. Also a schick injector. On DE blades my rule of thumb is one face and one head shave and out. On SE blades I get 3-4 shaves, I use a lot of blades. just saying. Have a great week.

Great advice! I still consider myself new to the DE style of shaving (8 months). When I picked up my first razor and sample pack I had thought I found the best blade for me ( LORD Super Chrome) and instantly bought a 100 pack. Earlier this week I tried an Astra green and fell in love! I guess you're right by saying there's probably more than one blade that fits your skin out there! I'm glad I didn't get rid of that sample pack! If I hadn't picked up that Astra, I probably would be missing out on great shaves simply because I jumped the gun too soon by settling for a blade that I thought was good enough. Also experimenting is kind of fun too. Quick question, do you ever just continue to try new blades or are you always keeping to the blades you have in your rotation?

Thanks for the video. I’m a new shaver who started with a blade sampler and have had a good experience with most of them. I have yet to find a razor that paired well with the Feather blades. Just too rough for me, even with many days of growth. Your take on not having time, energy or interest in a full production shave is spot on. I rarely have an interest in spending 30 minutes or more shaving. I’m more of a realist than a hobbyist. My ideal shave is two passes and done. Even lathering for five minutes seems excessive to me. Maybe I’ll find a happy medium or is wet shaving really just for hobbyists?
@CDShavinMurphy
@CDShavinMurphy 2 жыл бұрын
The feather blades are tough, you either love them or you don't like them at all. I found that people who don't like the feather blades because they're too aggressive seem to like the Astra ones quite a bit. Astra has a couple different models of their blades that you can try. I found those blades tend to pair well with most razors. As far as the lathering is concerned if you're looking to cut down on a little bit of time I would suggest using a shaving cream versus a soap and buy cream I don't mean the garbage that comes in the can. I mean either the stuff that comes in a tube or even some artisans make a cream base shave soap. I think on some of the shaving supply sites you can filter it down to just creams and there is quite a bit to offer. I know that Taylor of old Bond Street has a really good formula for this because you can pretty much just dip the brush into the bowl throw a little water on it and you can face lather in about a minute and a half

For Derby, try the newer ones. The writing on the tuck goes long ways on the new packs. They retooled for the newer "USTA" and "platinum" line and now their regular derby blades have changed. They are sharper and more comfortable to my face. Still not my favorite but alot better. The old ones were unusable. Blue packs are 10 packs and 5 packs are still green. But the writing is perpendicular to the older style on the tucks. 👍🏻

Damn I'm just trying out the Dollar Tree safety razor with 5 pack blades. Bought it on a whim to check out. Usually use the 4bladed disposable walmart brand cartridges but im digging the safety razor. Shaves decent and mine is a shit dollar tree one.. Thinkin about getting a decent razor and a pack of decent blades. The shave style is a bit different than those cartridge blades. Feels kinda neat although I knicked myself my 1st shave with it. It's a hell of a lot cheaper but I only shave my neck and cheek area as I have a beard so blades last me quite a while.

The thing with feather blades is typically although not always but typically the first shaved with them is not always the greatest comfort wise because they kind of have this break in. It's not a bad shape by any means but you find that your subsequent shaves are much better. That said I get a serious amount of shaves out of one blade from them before I call it quits. I said Astra is a fantastic way to start with I can't say enough about that company

It's the lubrication of the shave soap or cream more than anything IMHO. Like with any tool, let the tool do the work. In this case, the blade and razor. Go slow. the reason why we can not judge which blades is better than the others is due to the fact that we have different type of skin and different thickness of facial hair, also we are in a different habit of using the blade once or using as long as it is not dragging on our skin.

Which finish is the most durable with the (Merkur Futur)? The (polished chrome) or the (matte chrome) ?
@CDShavinMurphy
@CDShavinMurphy 4 жыл бұрын
I only used the matte one so im not too sure. My guess would be that it depends on your definition of durable. It's been my experience that razors that are matte or stainless steel with that dull finish, seem to not show fine scratches as much as say a polished chrome one might. Beyond that in terms of metal corrosion of sorts, I don't believe i can speak to that as I have not used the Chome plated one you speak of

Weirdly, the King C Gillette blades, which they are currently selling for their King C Gillette modern DE razor has worked the best for me..comfortable dhave and not at all aggresive. I have heard from several sources….that the King C. Gillette blade ….is just a Gillette Platinum blade (Russian made) that has been rebranded with the KCG logo. I concur with that as I have used both branded blades…and they seemed the same to me. If you liked the King C. Gillette blade (or G. Platinum)…..try a Gillette Nacet blade (Russian made). The G. platinum was very good…but not quite as sharp and smooth as the Nacet.

Even if you’re a DE shaver you should keep a nice cartridge razor with minimal blades on standby if you need a quick shave. The Gillette Sensor Excel is my favorite, only two blades and it’s a very nice comfortable shave that you can do in a pinch. Don’t use the 5 bladed razors Gillette is making these days though, and if you do, never shave ATG with it.

I really liked the Japanese Feather blades but they are expensive and I experienced that several blades were unusable. In a ten pack I would get anywhere between 1 to 3 blades that were unusable. WARPHEAD not every blade is for every beard that's for sure :-) it's a good thing there's so many out there right? Sometimes it can be a little overwhelming trying to find the right blade in what seems like an endless supply of companies and models if you will. My suggestion to you would be if the feather is seemed to be a little harsh then you might try something like an Astra SP or maybe even a voskhod? These seem to be quite popular and people have really good luck with them. I used to use Astro SPS when I first started wet shaving. As my technique improved I found I needed something sharper and the feathers are my go-to.

Personally, I found using tea tree conditioner rather than a shaving gel to be much better. Fewer cuts and fewer razor bumps. Today I used the shaving gel on head and face, big mistake. The skin feels more like it's been irritated with a slight burn sensation. I don't get that with the tea tree conditioner. It must be the tea tree ingredient that helps? I worry more using the safety razor compared to using say something like a BIC double blade disposable shaver. I must say BIC is so much cheaper. For me, a year's shave with BIC is about $20 (50 shavers). Yet to see saving anything using a safety razor. But I do like the old fashioned shavers but I find them not a money saver.

Nickel dime blades perform. Maybe just 2 or 3 shaves but against a 25Cent blade they still come out ahead to save money. ive learned that if they sell 500 or 1000 at a time its barbers they cater to. And a Barber will not purchase a bad blade.
@CDShavinMurphy
@CDShavinMurphy 2 жыл бұрын
That is very true however I've noticed that barbers will not purchase a bad blade per se but they will purchase an inefficient blade on the side of caution. They tend to choose mild to really mild blades, I found the few times I've gone for a legit shave and they use something like a shavette the blades tend to be really dull and never get it nice and smooth

They are not the sharpest but give me a comfortable BBS shave with my 6S and 6C razors. They have a real cult following out here in shaverland. I ran across a guy on a shaving forum that has a 3000 blade stockpile of “Voshkies”. That’s what I call a loyal customer. Can you imagine how long it’s going to take….to go through 3000 blades? More time than I’ve got…..being 79 and shaving every two days.

+CD Shavin' Murphy well, I use the single one (the barber shop type). I use it every week for neck hair and had no problems with it for years, except for Derby's, awfull rash that I cannot explain. maybe its the formula made for "depop".

It's taken me 6 months, multiple razors & finally an R41 to decide Derby Extra's are utter garbage for me. I'll never use one of those again. PIF'd the lot of them.

My advice would be this. If you’re new to DE shaving buying a sampler is ok, BUT you have no idea how to shave yet and your opinion on how a blade shaves doesn’t mean much. It’s going to take some time to learn technique, and then you’ll be able to figure out which blade best suits you. Buying a sample pack to begin with just gives you more variables to worry about and you probably won’t know which is better than the other.

Why That Razor on your head I’m asking because I’m a Beginner with A Safey razor
@CDShavinMurphy
@CDShavinMurphy 4 жыл бұрын
The razorock? It isn't something i use a lot of anymore. I like the yaqi heads, but that razor is awesome in that it has a lot of forgiveness...i feel it's a good teacher of slants. You can throw an aggressive blade in it and have an aggressive shave. Or tone it down a bit with a lesser aggressive blade but still get the slicing type of shave a slant bar gives
