Chinese doesn't generally have tense - all verbs stay the same form regardless of time. Time is conveyed through context, time expressions and markers. So there is certainly a way of saying "loved", just not how English says it.

I have heard so many people recently say they adored the Ministry of Time but they don’t think it would appeal to a wider audience and everyone of them has touched on slightly different parts. It seems like the type of book that gives the individual reader what they need in that moment which is beautiful!

I love the Mid-Year Book Tag! I'll answer the questions. - Best book you’ve read so far in 2024 --> Lady Audley's Secret. I loved this book so! much! - Best sequel you've read so far in 2024 --> Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson. The climax was insane. - New release you haven't read yet, but want to --> Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands. I wasn't too keen on the first one, but I like the characters well enough to try the second one. - Most anticipated release for the second half of the year --> Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson, the fifth book in the Stormlight Archive series. I am so scared! - Biggest disappointment --> Babel by RF Kaung. It sounded like a perfect book for me. It had everything I was interested in. The book wasn't as good as I thought it would be. - Biggest surprise --> Once Upon a Broken Heart. I did NOT think I would like this. Especially because I'm not the biggest fan of YA fantasy/romance. And although it's not very good objectively, I LAUGHED SO MUCH at its ridiculousness. I had a great time. - Favorite new author. (Debut or new to you) --> Ursula K Le Guin. I read A Wizard of Earthsea recently and it became one of my favorite books. Her prose is magical. I look forward to reading more from this series and trying Le Guin's Sci-Fi books. - Newest fictional crush --> Kaladin Stormblessed from the Stormlight Archive. I love him so much y'all. - Newest favourite character --> Dalinar Kholin from Stormlight Archive. - Book that made you cry --> Lady Audley's Secret and Oathbringer. - Book that made you happy --> Half A Soul by Olivia Atwater. - Most beautiful book you've bought so far this year (or received) --> The Dragonsteel edition of Yumi and The Nightmare Painter. It's so gorgeous! The colors are amazing, and so are the illustrations inside. - What books do you need to read by the end of the year? --> I need to read Rhythm of War before the release of Wind and Truth in December.

Adding 'Minister of Time' to my wishlist. And since like words as much as the rest of us: the concept of time in English is experienced very differently than in the romance languages. In English you ARE your age. Other languages I speak you HAVE your age. Which is by default so much heavier and less abstract. I love how in English you *are* as in it is temporary, fragile and romantic.

OMG!!! Edmond Dantes!!! 😊😊😊 I remember reading The Count of Monte Cristo coz it's a requirement in an English high school class but because I super loved it, I read it many times. Our class even came up with a short musical on the novel and I had to play Edmond Dantes coz we were in an all-girls school and I think the majority of the class voted for me to play that role. My gosh! I was so scared coz I had to deepen my small high-pitched voice, and also I had to sing when I couldn't even carry a tune! 🤣 But the president of our Glee Club was in my class so she kind of trained me. Wooohh! Ending: our class won 2nd place I think, among seven (?) classes coz it was an inter-class competition so I guess I portrayed him well. 😁😁😁 Just sad that I wasn't able to keep my copy of that book. I think I sold it when I was in college. Should I get a new one? Haha! Edmond Dantes lovers club, let me in! 😁😁😁

Hi Emma! I also didn't like House of the Spirits. I read it back in 2020 for high school and had a really bad time getting through it. After that, I point blank refused to pick up anything else by Allende. Until last night, when for some reason I opened Mi pais inventado (my invented country). I guess you could say it's more of a memoir, but it's really good, I am loving it to pieces, so if you ever feel like reading something for her again I'd really recommend that one ❤❤❤

There were a few great ones but this was obviously amazing Biggest surprise: "The Unanswered Question" by Leonard Bernstein (I have tried a truly impressive amount of music since reading this omg) Favourite new author: Definitely Italo Calvino ❤ Book that made me cry: Memorial by Alice Oswald Book that made me happy: The Nine Tailors by Dorothy L. Sayers To read by end of year: If I can finish just a couple more bookclub picks before having to switch to focusing on school then I will be happy 😢 A final honourable mention/extra surprise: "Embracing Contraries: Explorations in Learning and Teaching" by Peter Elbow is absolutely enthralling.

Xiaolu Guo is one of my favourite writers, and the book you mentioned one of my favourites by her! It made me happy to hear you mention her, it's the first time I hear about her on social media :) I'm currently learning Mandarin so can help out a bit here (though more fluent speakers are very welcome to correct me!): Mandarin doesn't have tenses per say, not in the way that Western languages do. There are particles that you can add to the sentence that gives more specificity to the timing of the predicate, but it is not in the same way that tenses do. For example adding 'le' means that the action is completed, or 'guo' means that it relates to a past experience of the speaker, but yeah, not quite the same.

Dear Ellie, I thought the cover of 'Ministry's was so cool, and so I got one ordered from the UK! Yep, first edition, signed at a release date with memorabilia from this event...... and.... it arrives here in a couple of days! When I saw your blog about it, I figured it would be pretty good in my collection.... thanks, happy trails

FINALLY!!!😄 Someone who is obsessed with The Ministry of Time as I am🥹 In my corner of booktube I’ve been seeing quite a bit of disappointment with it but it’s one of my top favourites so far this year. The discussion of immigration/belonging/otherness meant so much to me. I was obsessed with her Author’s Note and I totally fell into a rabbit hole researching Lt Graham Gore and the expeditions he was part of. Apparently there’s a show, The Terror, about the Franklin expedition that I can’t wait to get my grubby hands on and continue to love on all that this book brings into my life!

@@dani_wade I should warn you that it is a pretty brutal depiction of the story. It’s based on the supernatural horror/historical fiction novel by Dan Simmons, so probably doesn’t have the same vibes as The Ministry of Time! Absolutely worth it for the beautiful characters though.

@@dani_wade Yep! I read it before watching the show. One of my favourite horror novels, definitely not for everyone though! The characters aren’t as likeable in the book, so if you prefer stories with really likeable characters, the show is probably more suitable for you.

Hi Emma, I am honestly surprised you didn't like House of the Spirits. It was a 5-star read for me but I haven't read 100 Years of Solitude so I don't know how the two would compare. Aside from that, I am slowly making my way through 1Q84 and loving it so far.

The best experience I've had this year is with the audiobook of I'm Thinking of Ending Things, which is just so good it becomes the definitive edition of that story. And Donna Tart reading The Secret History was tons of fun, also the best version. Absurdly long and dull in parts but her performance is amazing. I also loved The Overstory by Richard Powers, which is about trees impacting the lives of several characters across decades. But my favourite new author is Martin MacInnes, and I read his first two books Infinite Ground and Gathering Evidence, which are both special in different ways. Gathering Evidence, a sort of techno, eco horror, in particular, is the most thrilled, unsettled (in the best way) I've been since Annihilation. Highly recommended. Infinite Ground has about 50 passages I want to quote but this was my favourite: "He used to think he could see where language fell. The loads amassed at a particular conductive right angle. It was one of the things that made a bathroom different -- its dearth of words. Rooms affected by language were warmer, softer. It was cold where no one had spoken for a long time." I have A Dowry of Blood on audio, excited for it! I am going to buy The Ministry of Time

Another book that has *some* similarities to One Hundred Years of Solitude that you may like is Little, Big by John Crowley. It is, for me, the single most beautifully-written novel I’ve read. It has a family tree printed at the front that I kept having to reference (Crowley has said the family saga part was inspired by Solitude) and blends the mundane and the fantastical. It’s not as wild and topical as Solitude, but it’s gorgeous and I found it remarkably moving :)
