Ben, I just recently got into the 2012 Mac Pro (The last Cheese grater) and wanted to advance and soup-up the old girl to the max! I added in two drives into the DVD bay (Which I never use) and got into Opencore as a solution for updates. Since getting into Opencore I have created a Facebook page for OC on the Mac Pro, and we are able to update to both Catalina and Big Sur. This include video hardware acceleration....this could be a potential solution for you and your visitors. Thanks for the great video. I love my new/old cMP! Thanks RC

Great walk through on the benefits of these amazing under rated machines. Kind of wished we had all just stayed quiet about them cause the prices on the used market is skyrocketing. With that said. Was able to still score a 2010 Dual 6 core for $150 USD. Built it up with NVMe drive 2 M.2 SATA SSD and a couple of Raid 1's in the expansion bays. Will be tearing it all down soon for an OpenCore guide.

Haha. Oh well. $150 USD is a pretty solid deal. I still hear of them going to the junk yard so I think having some value will keep more out of the trash. Im about to add NVMEs to my system. And looking forward to the gains

I have a Mac Pro (Mid 2012) running HS and CS6. I can’t be bothered with upgrading to the latest and greatest. Only use it for one purpose-vector artwork creation. The only thing that I need to add would probably a 30-inch Cinema Display though my dual 20-inch Cinema setup is not bad either.

Nice. I run a 32" and a 27" display. I would rather have two displays over one big one but that is mostly because I do video and like to have one monitor to view the full screen image.

Great video, I am absolutely thinking about the Pro’s and cons of switching to a 2009 Mac Pro and upgrading it compared to my current late 2014 iMac with an i5 and garbage graphics card. I edit video in FCPX which I think would make better use of a decent gpu in an upgraded 2009 Mac Pro. I’d love your thoughts!
@BenSchubert

It would definitely give you better performance in FCPX. I have been using resolve more and more because of how well it uses the GPU. I'm not even using an amazing GPU but I am seeing really great results.

Support your thoughts and I sold my m1 and bought a Mac Pro 2010 . M 1 is faster but I think it is not steady as the Mac Pro. And there is some mouse incompatibility of m1 and other unexpected issues. Maybe m2 will be better. So I even bought MacBook Pro 2012 as my daily laptop. Anyway as a video editor, steady is the most my needs than other concerns.

Good to know. Its tempting but honestly Its the drive space I have in my Mac Pro that I am most addicted to. Until they make a "M1" style Mac Pro, Im not even interested.

As a suggestion, one can install OpenCore 6.0.1 on the 5,1. There is an entire 5,1 community on the web, and a few videos to show how it is done, pretty simple. Anyways, the advantage of installing OpenCore 6.0.1 on the 5,1 is that it will enable hardware acceleration especially when rendering/exporting video when using FCPX. The performance difference with and without is dramatic.

That’s a good machine still. You would be giving up a bunch of functionality to switch to a Mac Pro. I would recommend looking at a Thunderbolt enclosure with 2 PCI slots. One for a GPU and one for an nvme raid. This way you can run desktop level power at your desk but still keep the portability of a laptop.

I want to say yes because I did and I love it, but it all depends on much work you want to put into setting up and maintaining it. Most of the maintenance is software as the OS can only be updated through patches like Open Core. For the most part that is fairly easy, so if you are up for doing the work, then it is pretty great. There are lots of great videos on KZfaq about this and definitely check out the "MacProUpgrade" group and the "OpenCore - on the Mac Pro" group on facebook before you buy anything. There are tons of great tips on best/compatible parts and deals.

@@BenSchubert thanks man! I loved your video, and yes I do enjoy sort of tinkering with things like this. I have a pretty good idea of what it entails. I've just been warded off by some out there that probably haven't even done this, but still.. they say things like it's still ancient and would be slower than a new computer even when maxed out, so.. I don't want to trade my cow for some subpar beans you know? but it is so damn intriguing to me I don't know if I can resist. I do understand the single core is a bit slow... how much stuff does that actually affect? Thats something I definitely don't know too much about. Processing threads and cores. I believe I've read that GB/Logic is single core intesive as well as multicore, but yet I see audio producers out there saying this machine kills it for them. Do you have anything to say about that?
@BenSchubert
@BenSchubert 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t use Logic but there are a lot of Logic users in the MacProUpgrades group. A lot of programs are offloading more work to the GPU so look in to how you might benefit from that. I haven’t noticed any speed issues until I started dealing with 8k footage but most of that is because my GPU needs to be updated as well as my OS. 8k is still not really part of my main workflow so it doesn’t matter that much yet. I do a lot of 4K Raw work in DaVinci Resolve and it is super smooth. I also expanded the drives so my scratch drive is an 8tb nvme raid with 25tb of backup. This thing is a beast. It feels like like the computer nerd equivalent of restoring an old hot-rod to race newer sedans. It is surprisingly capable for its age.
