Yeah it’s really tough making these videos because I’m finding all kinds of stuff at these stores harbor freight, Walmart and now tractor supply, that I never knew they carried. I’m fighting buying random stuff real hard.

But particularly Harbor freight because it’s so cheap.

I’ve had amazing luck with harbor freight. My budget go to lights are nilight (amazon) but the output isn’t quite as bright as those road shocks from what I’ve seen.

I found the jerry gas cans at mine, only had 3 in stock but here in SoCal there's practically 1 harbor freight in every other city.

I wanted to talk more about those cases since I do use them, however the things that I store inside of them don’t exactly fall in line with KZfaq’s values as far as the second amendment. So I chose not to talk about them but I really do think they are great.

Yeah I wanted to talk about them but didn’t want KZfaq to demonitized the channel or something because I mentioned ammunition or something. YT isn’t to friendly to that convo. Best I can say is that I’m very pro 2nd amendment.

Those ammo cans are great, I get the plastic and metal ones when they go on sale. I use them for camera gear, ammo, and first aid. They are also great for random items.

I actually just built a cheap awning out of one of their tarps and some extendable paint sticks. I filmed it but I’m not sure it’s worth a video.

@@paladin11C40 I've seen another yt review saying to use sealant around the screws to prevent water being trapped and rust issues. it comes with a rubber tube that slides over after you connect and screw down each connecting point, but i still added sealant. overall, its pretty good for the price!

Yeah me and a buddy yanked a Silverado up a huge rock face with that winch on metberry gulch. Basically the most difficult and steep part of the trail and the winch pulled him right up.

Yes - I’ve used several models of HF compressors and have been happy. Even the small 12V is good for airing up.

I only buy synthetic for my stuff. Steel is also very heavy.

I can personally say using steel cable in the snow sucks sooo bad. Synthetic is priceless.

No joke when I lived in North Carolina I would wash my car only at dawn or dusk so I would use both a headlamp and our street lamp to clean it. I don’t miss summer days in the south but summer nights I really do miss.

That’s awesome that it lasted that long. My expensive REI one goes into some sort of weird limp mode if I used it for 6 hours straight.

@OXFOOT not sure if you clarified to viewers rope less than two inches wide is bad for a tourniquet. Material should be at least one and a half inches in width so 550 cord is a last ditch effort.

Something that should be added, NEVER use any winch components that are not tested and approved by a trusted independent lab. Many things you can cheap out on, but something that could easily kill you or a bystander is not it. The winch is fine, no idea how reliable it will be in an emergency, but if it fails it won’t directly kill you. The synthetic line, snatch blocks, d-rings etc are definitely something you shouldn’t buy if they aren’t certified at those loads. No matter how beefy they look, the material used and treatment process can make the difference between 1,000lb rating and 10,000lb rating even with the same thickness.

Yeah, I recently switched to a goal zero venture jump. I really researched it hard because I learned what jumper cables can do to a vehicle. Thanks for the heads up on that for everyone else!

That’s great to hear. I actually ended up seeing some very similar… suspiciously similar at an outdoor company and they were almost $100. I’m sure there’s some quality differences but I’d you use them that often and they are still going then the quality seems to be there.

I still call it camping/ car camping or back packing depending on what type. I hate the term overland but people who are looking for car camping stuff on KZfaqcall it overland.

That's because Overlanding isn't your traditional style camping. Hence why they came up with a separate term. Most Overlanding situations involve trailing down a 4x4 path to find a pretty good camping spot. Back in the days, people would just typically pull into predesignated campgrounds or just to the local lake to "camp". It wasn't as dispersed at it is now. It's a pretty balanced mixture of Off-Roading and "outback" style camping. That is why it is referred to as "Overlanding" taken from the traditions of Australian Off-Roading.

Yeah I don’t exactly know why but that makes sense. Yeah the roller fairlead are for the steel only. If you go synthetic with that winch then switch the fairlead as well.

I’ve got some other videos on some budget stuff that’s good for a beginner as well. I always say to buy the budget one and then if you feel like you need to upgrade you can and you can sell the old one or have a back up. If you find that the budget option is enough, then you saved yourself the trouble and money of buying the top brand.

That’s good news. Most folks in the comments have praised the chair. Only heard one person say anything bad and only then they said that it tipped over with a beer on it. I’d call that a decent chair.

That sounds just like my old set up. I used to do so much with that set up. When I lived in the Appalachian mountains I would just go wonder into the woods near the parkway and spend a day or two chilling in the hammock. Fun times.

I’ve never used a come along before because I usually just go with a dedicated winch pretty quickly after starting a build. It seems like a nice cheap option to a full on winch and it performs pretty much the same function. It looks kind of dangerous though. I’d have to do more research on them because sometimes looks can be deceiving.

Yeah I have a lot of their tools and some power tools from them. I like the price but I really like the price coupled with the warranty.

@@OXFOOT just get one and try it out. We have used them to move things you'd never believe. I used to rebuild trash trucks the cylinders on those trucks are weird shapes and extremely heavy. Also used come-along to straighten bent frames. The only thing that will stop you is your mind. In my day every 4 wheeler had at least 2 come alongside one cable an one chain. It would at least make a great video have fun.👍

@@richardhenry1969 I got my come along from Harbor Freight, just haven't found a place to store it in or on my vehicle yet, so it just sits in the trunk! But yep! Cheap option and arguably sometimes has a better angle than a forward mounted wench

@@wreckitmech306 you wouldn’t believe some of the stuff I’ve done with a come-along in the army I changed a clutch in the middle of the desert all I had was a handful of tools a diggers bar ( in the army they are tankers bar). Fun times especially because I was airborne infantry but I had more experience then our mechanic. Truthfully I don’t think he could change a tire. Lol

It’s been brought to my attention that some of the stuff mentioned in the video isn’t in other states. I believe the hammock and a few other things but for the most part it should be pretty similar. Hopefully your local store is stocked up.

Yeah i think even people who are scared of harbor freight would be fine just buying stuff like that. Straps are straps for the most part, same with zip ties, and little things like that. Now I can kinda understand people scared to buy a winch from there but I think harbor freight has much better sourcing tactics lately and actually find good stuff to keep in stock.

Please be careful with their zip ties if you actually expect them to hold any load.

That sounds like I good idea. I swear I can’t see anything when I back up at night. I’m always glad I have a backup cam because there isn’t enough light from the taillights.

The rocks lights are bright! I have a 2000 blazer and wired them as my interior lights. 10/10 recommend them for anything

Yeah I used to always do this with tarps. They have “tent foot prints” made for tents at like almost the price of the tent but a regular tarp works fine. Like yeah, okay… it’s not the same shape and size as the tent base but who cares?

About use of magnets: important to wash clean each mounting spot before placing magnet, to prevent dust/dirt from grinding into paint.

Yeah I have personally only used their duct tape a few times and it’s been pretty meh. I will say that I have a battery tender for my Harley and ive had pretty good luck with it. That being said I don’t think that harbor freight stuff is bad I just think that QC from their suppliers isn’t always spot on. That’s how I can have a good working product and you can have some fail. That’s why I always hear so many mixed reviews if their stuff. It either works or it doesn’t. It’s not amazing if it does work, it just does the job. If it doesn’t work, at least they’ll replace it.

Most of the tools I've purchased have been reliable and a good value, although their price differential compared to Home Depot, Lowes, Napa, etc., has narrowed over the last year. I often will preferentially buy an American made product, especially after the CCP's increased international belligerence their initial concealment of Covid, and refusal to allow independent investigations into its origin. But it's sad to see that even traditional American brands now have their products made in China. As for their winches, I bought two 2500 lb winches for INDOOR use. Both work. But I belatedly (after warranty expiration) discovered that one has less than half the pulling power of the other. It works, but something is wrong with the internal coils/wiring

Damn, they don’t have harbor freight on the island? I have a video coming up with Walmart, do you guys have that there? I’m guessing shipping from the mainland is pretty bad from traditional camping and offroad shops. The offroad community there is a whole other ball game from what I’ve seen.

So there may be some differences at your store due to location and that this was shot in the summer but I think they keep a lot of the stuff year round. Worst case you can have it delivered to your local store.

Yeah I never really saw myself as an overlander. I was just a backpacker that liked offroading and got too lazy to do overnight hikes. Then the more I put the word “overland” in the title the more views the videos got. And here we are now haha.

Yeah it’s not my go to brand of cast iron but it’s still cast iron. Unless a company blatantly lies about the cast iron they are usually pretty similar.

I keep the shovel and hatchet in my Jeep for camping. I have the folding saw not the bow saw, but I would imagine it would be reliable. I did have to put a better edge in the hatchet though

Thanks that’s really good information. Once I get a bumper to mount them I think I’ll just go with those. There’s some law about US nozzles that makes them weird, if you look at older gas cans supposedly they were a lot better. I’m not a gas can expert though.

I agree. It’s really trial and error with them sometimes but generally the stuff I mentioned here is probably pretty full proof. I had a rule about not buying power tools there but I also have an angle grinder that’s done amazing, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Yeah hf isn't terrible unless ya buy battery tools but their newer ones seem to have gotten better..but corded tools are perfectly fine for an occasional use tool . daily use would be better to at least buy Ryobi or similar brands but they can be had refurbished off eBay for half cost. Hand tools I buy there a lot because they have lifetime warranty..who cares if it's a cheap tool it works .I've rarely broken a harbor freight tool .if you use em wrong no brand will survive.

I gotta look into that. All my batteries in the house are rechargeable, I try not to get non rechargeable ones when I can.

I disagree. Rechargeable batteries have a fairly short shelf life between charges. Alkaline batteries much longer. Since tools, flashlights, or whatever in vehicles are only used occasionally, it's better to have a set of alkaline batteries stored separately and installed when needed.

All great advice! Thanks so much. Yeah everyone back home (North Carolina) used to carry chains with them. We also used to camp with chain saws too. It’s weird how it’s so different in different areas.

I have my ditch lights set up as flood lights but I also don’t have side shooting lenses on them. Mine are bajas and are great as a flood. The idea of the side shooting lenses is that it is a flood at that point because the light pattern shown on the box doesn’t include the side pods.

Rock lights are for tire placement yes, but IF I got them I would use them for camp.

@@OXFOOT The side lights just don't throw enough light. Not for good wide angle view. At the end of it, you want your ditch lights to be flood, and your bar to be mounted high and be 'spot' to focus light in distances. This means you get 3 coverage points, up close (flood), main headlights (med), and light bar (distant)

I had a too light bar and absolutely hated it. In Colorado it’s too dusty for them. I have a bumper light bar because the top mounted light bar just usually illuminates dust and snow. I’m not a fan.

I have a buddy who runs the exact like for ditch and seems to think it lights up enough in the side pods. I don’t disagree that typically you would want a flood. I like the baja flood/spot combo personally.

I have a nitecore headlamp had it for close to 10 years now never had an issue only 1 which was my mistake changed batteries and apparently the dead one rolled under my truck and I squished it it still holds juice but is out of round and won't fit in the light tube😂

Reflective probably makes more sense if you walk around with a headlamp which I usually do. Maybe I’ll have to check that out. The glow in the dark chord isn’t super bright so you might be in to something.

The reflective line I have will pick up light from the camp fire, or a flashlight even with a red headlamp the reflective I use is noticeable even if the GITD is not. The biggest problem with glow in the dark is it has to soak up light to be able to glow (sometimes for minutes, sometimes for hours depending on the product). How long depends on the quality of the GitD material used. If you are like me (or several outdoor channels I follow) it is not uncommon to roll/hike into camp just before sundown if not after. that does not give much time for the GITD material to build up a charge. It is not uncommon for GITW to be depleted in the middle of the night when you want to slip over to the latrine. I do still make use of GitD as mentioned above I have stake caps and toggles, I like to mark containers with GitW paint or tape (especially important ones like first aid kit which has a GitD first aid cross patch glued onto it.) and I have often had GitW tape rings around my fire extinguisher (a band on the bottom, and a band just below the shoulder of the cylinder) I used to have GitW paint on my old scuba gear for similar reason. the more ways you can make your stuff noticeable, the easier it is to spot in an emergency or the less likely you are to trip over it in the wee hours. I like to have both reflective and GitD on safety items as well. As I replace my camping gear it will again be getting GitD and Reflective treatment. Some reflective tape and GitD paint or tape on a new first aid kit, red reflective (harbor freight and amazon both have red/white reflective tape for trailers) on fire extinguishers. it is not a bad idea to mark easily lost items with reflective tape or reflective paracord. I presently have an iorange and black (harley colors) paracord key chain on my key fob, but since I have push button ignition, I tend to keep my keys attached to my belt at all times. I am still considering replacing the orange and black with orange and reflective (my tacoma is orange) if you have electric lanterns for camp it is not a band idea to mark the switch for your light with GitD (I used to have one with GitD paint around the switch bezel.)

Yeah I remember the one near me growing up was pretty iffy but that might just have been that location. I really do think it’s come a long way in really the last maybe 10 years.

Yeah that’s how I treat it. I’ll buy something and then assess if I need something better down the road. It’ll the Pittsburg or another product does fine then I stuck with it, if not I’ll just buy something else and I only spent a few $$ on the harbor freight thing.

Yeah I hadn’t messed with their chains very much but my dad has a lot of chains and stuff for towing and for emergencies and he’s a big harbor freight guy. Yeah that’s nice I’d rather have a strap in that situation but the chain has a lot more uses and would likely be a better purchase if you’re mostly doing on road recoveries where it’s less likely to be a yanking pull. Maybe I should consider carrying some chain with me as well.

@@OXFOOT there’s a lot of uses for a chain that a strap isn’t good for. I live in the Pacific Northwest and everyone I know carries a big chain. Probably because that’s what is used when logging lol. Side note: besides duct tape a roll of bailing wire is essential in a lot of situations also a roll of #36 bank line comes in handy. Add a couple of heavy duty needles and you can stitch up just about anything with the bank line. Cheers
