If you hike in the rain with a DSLR mounted on a capture clip, a dollar store shower cap works surprisingly well as a mini pack cover for your camera. It fully covers my 24-70 with hood and covers about 90% of my 70-200 with hood reversed. 1.5 oz

Thanks for the informative video. Reaffirmed many of my personal choices - after much trial and error. I've also settled on the A7C with Tamron 28-200mm combo for longer backpacking trips. Image quality is pretty decent for an all-in-one lens. But definitely switching to a A7C2 if Sony comes out with one with a better viewfinder.

Awesome information! Thanks for making this video and for sharing! I actually recently purchased the A7C and the kit lens which is actually very solid in terms of quality and weight. Still, for cross country travel over rugged terrain I leave my full frame mirrorless camera at home and go with the cell phone.

Well done, I'd add my own preference for backpacking, my Olympus OMD EM-5 mkIII, very light and the lenses are much lighter than even Sony ASP-C lenses. After using most mirrorless brands Olympus has the best IBIS I've used. I also shoot with Sony, and unless you shoot in low light a lot, M4/3 works great. But if you have a Sony already they are fantastic cameras. Fujifilm, Panasonic also make reasonably light but excellent cameras. The newest Canon full-frame mirrorless cameras are getting great reviews and I plan to rent one when my local store has one available.

One of the best videos related to this topic I’ve seen in a long time. Good job aaaaand subbed! :) BTW: Another great option for the Sony APS-C cams as an all-in-one-ish hiking lens could be the 18-135mm f3.5 - 5.6. Good image quality and AF, OSS and huge zoom range for a compact lens with only 325g of weight.

I use the Sony 18-135 zoom as my all around travel lens. I've also got the sigma 16mm f1.4 for those trips with planned night shots. For tripods I also have the ultrapod and I've got the peak design carbon tripod. I carry all my camera gear (minus the tripod) in the DCF fanny pack from hyperlite mountain gear.

I got 12mp DSLR 50-200mm lens and a tripod for my hiking. Keeps things simple and makes me think and restrained so I can spend more time admiring than stressing over taking picture.

I have the a6600 which has the stabilization. But there just aren't any good all-in-one hiker lenses that don't weigh a pound. The kit lense is a decent option but for wildlife 50mm just isn't enough to sneak in without scaring off wildlife. We need a lightweight 16-105mm or similar. I have an A-mount 18-135 that's pretty fair but it's also heavy and with an adapter, more heavy. Great content in this one, nicely done.

Mirrorless cannon cameras have adapters to be used for fitting ef or ef-s lenses to m lense camera mounts.

just found your channel - quality video! How do you safely store your gear in your pack while hiking, besides the capture clip? Seems to be a disconnect between the camera backpack community and the hiking/backpacking community!

This is a excellent video. I especially appreciate your attention to weight. Thank you! Random question, when you're outdoors, how often do you use the EVF? I'm looking at the A6100, A6400, and the ZV-E10. I like the lower weight of the ZV-E10, flip out screen, gyro stabilization, improved mic, and USB-C. The biggest downside is the lack of the EVF. Do you think the sacrifice is worth it? I've been a phone shooter all my life, so I have no experience with an EVF.

How do you pack the camera into your bag? other than the defender cap, do you have any other kind of padded protection? or is it mostly just hanging from your neck as you hike?

That tripod is funny : 71cm is the length of mine when it is folded, haha ! It's a bit of a pain to carry as it is 2.1 kgs but it's a huge tripod (Orion Tritech II). As a light I use the one I have on my mountain bike (super bright). Ziploc bags can be life saver. I use a camcorder (I'm into filmmaking not photography) so I don't have to carry lenses (I have a 24-600mm f1.8 f4.2 "in camera"). It weighs under 600 grams with filters and battery.

Great video. I got the Tampon 28-200mm after seeing this video. Was looking at some wider and lighter and cam down to these three. Tarmon 20mm 2.8, Tamron, 20-40mm 2.8 or the Tamron 17-28mm 2.8. I am mostly debating between the 20 and 20-40mm. Thoughts anyone?

DUDE!! ...AGAIN!! This is the third video of yours id wish I'd seen a while back. I couldn't find any good videos on trail tripods so i did one... it wasn't well recieved. I've not been happy with the Rode mic either. Definitely gonna check out the Deity! Great video and super helpful! I'm still a cell phone user only on trail so I'll come back again when I'm ready for an upgrade!

@@GearTestTV I've heard that the Deity back facing mic doesn't work with smartphones. Do you know if that is true?

Now that you mention it, I don't think I've tried recording the mic into a phone. I've always used it with other cameras, so I'm not really sure. I know it has to be stereo to record both mics. iPhone has a setting to turn on stereo audio recording, so I'll have to test it and see if that works.

@@GearTestTV in pretty sure my Samsung S10+ records in stereo. You never know with reviewers whether or not they just weren't aware of something you have to do to make it work. A few other reviewers also said the dead cats didn't do a good job with the wind so... im still hesitating on picking one up! If you happen to figure that out please let me know! Thanks.

Is there a backpack shoulder holster that would be compatible with both a phone and Insta360. I Insta360 sells a magnetic holster, but I don’t think that fits a regular phone so was looking for something that would hold both.

Great information and video - a little dated. As a canon guy I would say - new 24mpx r8 (450grams)and 15-30/24-50 or 16/24-15combo is a great option with better video than Sony but a little lessor mpx. The new Rf 100-400 is also a great option for wildlife. At the time of the video Sony had more light choices. Now I would say canon is equal or better. And canon now has R50 as replacement for m50 but lens are yet to come - but there should be some smoking deals coming on M6II that is the best apsc/small lens combo if you are not afraid of obsolete because the canon m lens are the best small lens/boy combination. The world is good with choices.

Hey Paul, I've been working on the idea of starting trekking, hiking and camping again. Am 40 now and one thing that brought me back to missing the outdoors again was this crazy lock downs. For years i felt disconnected with the outdoors because as a chef, i was always busy and convinced that i didn't have time to get on the trail again. Now, i started to do it again and the love for the outdoors come back and in force lol. Being a chef as been my biggest passion in life, with that said, i found myself getting really excited and interested in photography and video. I know a lot about cooking, not much about photography or video lol. My question to you is, if you can help me on this. In your opinion, what is the best bang for buck camera i can get to get start on photography and to start filming my small adventures. Sorry for the size of the comment 😅 but is a lot and am genuinely confused with the photography and video world. Keep up the amazing work and God bless

Hello, your post was a year ago, but I am curious if you got an answer to your question. I also used hiking during the summer of 2020 to help deal with the situation. The camera question is a tough one because there are so many choices. I had been shopping for a good year and a half before buying. Anyway, hope you were able to choose a camera that did the job!

Hey did you see the Nitecore SCL10? It's a 10k/mAh battery bank (same as your NB10000 probably) with an included video light that has adjustable color temps, 800 lumens and it weighs only 70 grams more than the regular NB10000 - so much lighter than your light, though, probably not as durable (but it's made from aluminum). Maybe this is something for you. Thanks for the video!

Re: memory cards - I hate those MicroSD adapters with a vengeance. For me (!) they introduce a bunch of completely unnecessary potential failure points. And I have been burned by that once and do not care for this repeating. So unless you have a specific requirement to have them interchangeable, I would not bother with the adapters. If I was to put together the equipment, I would always have dedicated (fullsize) memory cards specifically for my camera(s) and Micro cards for drones. But I realize that this might just be me being paranoid.

Great video, love the content! I carry an aoka 28 inch CF tripod (similar to the Oben, only cheaper) and a RX100 series camera, mavic mini (the mavic mini 2 is negated by it'scontroller), gopro hero 9. Does the job and left my a7riv at home. Picked up a bunch of your recommendations. Thanks!

So glad I found your video on outdoor camera gears. I've been looking for a smaller tripod for an extremely niche hobby and I don't need a full size tripod but not a small tabletop tripod. 28" is nearly perfect, i'll have to test this out for my next camping trip :P

I wouldn't say its too heavy. Its getting close to 3 lbs, so its not super lightweight, but I've carried heavier setups before. Thats a great combo, so it would probably be worth it for the image quality.

In NZ on bushwalks you usually have to get DOC (gov Dep of Conservation) and Iwi (local indigenous groups) as well as local council approval, as well as paying admin fees, to fly a drone over native forest or else you get a hefty fine. The reason for that is irresponsible and inexperienced drone fliers previously crashing their drones into trees, and the nests of endangered birds. They also flied too close to native wildlife to get good photos, freaking birds out and permanently scaring them away from nests so the chicks/eggs die, in some cases they even crashed into flying birds and caused bird injuries/death directly. Essentially idiots ruined it for everyone and you can only get approval if you are willing to set up the paperwork and admin months in advance of travelling and getting footage, which for most people except documentary makers, isn't worth it. I'm not against the rules since they help prevent idiots from killing wildlife. It just sucks that people were so idiotic that those rules are required in the first place.

Over here in Europe, the rules just changed so that you have to pass a theoretical exam in order to fly any camera drone. Which I guess is just as well. Not just because of your story, but from others as well. There’s a KZfaqr I know who posted a video with just scenic shots from the area, someone noticed what nations park he was filming from and next thing he knew he had prosecutors knocking at his door. He just didn’t think it over. So I hope that some basic education can not just educate, but scare the worst idiots off as well. It often doesn’t take too much before they won’t bother with it, quite simply.

That seems to be the case for most all drone laws. When I started flying 15 years ago, you could fly anywhere, just use common sense. As soon as drones became mass-produced and able to practically fly themselves, those with zero regard for other people, property, and nature brought on a slew of regulations. R/C flying used to be a huge hobby. Now the hobby has mostly died off due to all the hurdles that exist. I agree with you though, the rules are needed. Just unfortunate that the few have ruined it for the rest of us.

that center column is going to be hard with heavy lens. My manfrotto shook like a mf for almost 7 seconds after pressing shutter

Yeah it's hard to find an ultralight tripod that is stable with heavy setups. SmallRig recently released a carbon fiber tripod that is slightly heavier than the Oben, but also rated for higher weight. Hoping to test it out soon and see if it's any more stable.

id say the smart phone can take care of 90% in a pinch for sure . The 10% for wildlife and sports/action defiantly needs a lot more light gathering, compression, and focal range that a smart phone will never be able to do.
