Cars of this era were truly luxurious. The quality of the materials and the design were what it was all about. Now it seems to be the number of toys or how much bling you can throw at a car. Great to see this amazing car in such detail. Thanks Gary and David.

Hi Chris here from Hampshire coast. I have really enjoyed your brilliant vids over the Christmas period. Its a great escape from the party time. I started rebuilding motorbikes 8 years ago and now after 3/4 years have rescued cheap cars. Now I am rescuing a 1954 Standard 8. Hoping to enter local show this year. Your vids give me inspiration to keep at it ( I am nearly 76). Thank you keep up the style of your shows. Happy New Year to you and your family.

Morning Gary I recently purchased a Silver Shadow Grille and mascot for my man cave office, on hunch ....I asked for the aluminium chassis plaque from the donor car, to look at the cars history, amazingly the car was used for the Oasis stunt in a swimming pool, quite an interesting bit of history. I dismantled the grille to refurbish, if you haven't dismantled the grille and mascot... it's an amazing over engineered piece of work, the plinth the mascot is mounted on is machined to have a slight tilt and only fits one way on the top, run your finger around the groove on the underside of the mount you'll feel it's wider on one side, .....on the underside it's attache to a machined block of brass with a honed bore to accept the stem and spring mechanism for the mascot, it's a proper machine fit...the steel frame soldered to the stainless still section was rusty so I've carefully cleaned the surface and painted over with silver hammerite, leave exposed all the soldered joints it's amazing to see how they constructed these, sorry if I've bored you ....the quality of the construction is quite amazing, I have a feeling all the new stuff is probably pressed out like saucepans! I would love to see your your Corniche one day, as I own a 1973 fixed head two door saloon, perhaps you'll be going to the RREC international rally near Stamford in June 2023 ...Happy New Year ...All the best John Brown

Back in the 70s my neighbor, a doctor had a "big" Mercedes. It was unusual at the time when the M-B 280 sel was the largest and was becoming popular with Americans. The car was not a limo but a smaller 600. I've not seen another one that small since. Where I live in Portland, there is an independent M-B shop that restores them. There's always something to gawk at when picking up my C-class.

The 600 is a technical tour de force. Extremely well made and it needed to be because the complexity of this car from the hydraulics to the injected engine and electronic transmission are extraordinary. But the best no. I actually preferred the 300 SeL 6.3. Which was much faster. I have owned 3 of these cars. My last a RHD 1972 had all the fancy interior the later 6.3 engine and transmission. But make no mistake. Parts for these cars are stratospheric and much is no longer readily available. Eg head gaskets etc. But to say best is too much of a generalisation IMO because cars are used for vastly different puposes and the criteria of quality is so subjective. Hispano Suiza Packard all produced superb vehicles. As has Ferrari Aston Martin and Toyota! Today one of my key criteria is can I fix it. And here the 600 and the 6.3 score very poorly and there are a good many orphans around the world where owners have given up. The complex bespoke parts have become a nightmare. Superb but...

Pik Botha may have had great taste in cars but he was instrumental in keeping aparteid going for many, many years. Towards the end of the 80's, the National Party knew that their days were numbered and in order to alleviate a cival war, started their step down from power. I have no doubt in my mind had Nelson Mandela had died whilst incarcerated, there would have been bloodshed. Nelson also had great taste in cars though I doubt he would have turned it down. He was given a lovely W126 500SE soon after his release from prison.

Thanks Spencer. I thought it extremely controversial for a NP party member to come out with such a speech but maybe he saw it was an inevitability that Mandela would be released and was preparing his own future to continue under his govern. I was more interested in cars having interesting stories surrounding them as well as also marking significant points in history. Rated as the best car in the world at the time, members of the Elite and dictators alike all wanted one so these fantastic cars (for good or for bad) were always in the thick of it. Kind regards.

Sorry, but you are still too severe closing those doors; this should be done more gently. The doorlocks are very sensitive and it does not take all that much to damage the hydraulics. The locks are a nightmare to repair and the hydraulic piece is no longer available as a sparel part, only the whole lock. The cost of a new lock will make your eyes water. I have seen these modified with a spring after the hydraulic part had sprung to leak, but it's nowhere near as neat as the original action. I owned one of these cars, restored it and drove it in Targa Tasmania ('93). It performed really well and completed the 2000 kilometers without a scratch. A temporary Ferrari could not catch it.
@classic.obsession
@classic.obsession Жыл бұрын
The fact that the door locks are so easily damaged is a design fault. People don’t read a manual before travelling in them. For a supposedly beautifully engineered car this was under-tested and a massive flaw. That’s why by 1965-66 the soft closing door mechanism was ditched and quickly changed to a more conventional catch.

@@classic.obsessionThe 600 was a little like "Service Before Use " 🤔 I think that it was mainly designed as a chauffeur driven car. The Hydraulic Windows can be lethal and the automatic Parking Brake Release when engaging gear also is not such a good idea. I was surprised to discover that there were no protection (crash)bars inside the doors It was great fun to drive really fast on windy Tasmanian roads and from time to time l would engage the Bilstein sport mode feature, but only for a little while to avoid overheating the large shock absorbers. The car would handle like a huge GoKart. A very comfortable way to do a Tarmac Rally and the public loved it. The car was sold (in the late nineties) to a man in Perth, Western Australia and his mechanic told me last week that the car will be for sale.
