Which budget sewing machine is the best for upcycling or sewing through layers and layers of jeans or leather? And which sewing machine is best for beginners? I'm reviewing and testing the Brother Strong & Tough ST371HD and the Singer Heavy Duty 4452. I've heard a lot of good things about both machines and they're both under $200, so I wanted to give you all the facts about what they can and cannot do.

I just started tailoring my own clothes and got the Singer heavy duty, I mostly bought it because it was more manly looking (as a 32 year old guy I gotta protect my ego while sewing of course) but the thing performs like mad, it punches through anything I throw at it.

I'm back into garment making so thought I'd treat myself to a heavy duty Singer. I love it!! It sews almost as well as the 1940's Singer I used to own. The 40's machine had interchangable cams as well, to give you dozens of different fancy stitches. Now that was a heavy duty machine. On par with today's industrials.

I had a kenmore like that! It had stacks of cases w cams. Being new to sewing I hadn’t a clue but I diligently prodded on bc I loved playing w it. Later, my boss gave us a months salary (about $1,000) and I bought a Viking TOL for $850 and my kenmore trade in. Had that machine 45 yrs w only a change of computer card. Those were the days

When I was in high school in 1960 we had little old Singer straight stitch only sewing machines in our sewing classes which were good little work horses. We had 2 machines in clothing 2 classes that did zig zag and only the best students could use those.

I own a Brother cs6000i. I grew up using a Singer treadle sewing machine and as a novice with electric sewing machines, I was quite rough with it as I was used a full metal sewing machine that did not break no matter what I did (it would be 75 years old now). The Brother sewing machine survived my rough handling pretty well (I might have dropped it once or twice 😅). Bought it in 2012 and still love using it to this day.

I love your side by side comparison of these machines. The thicknesses that they both go through is amazing. I'm glad you were using the Teflon foot. It's my favorite accessory when sewing through leather or vinyl. Also, I saw you were using a heavy duty 100/16 needle, but an actual leather needle has a sharper, more 3D diamond shaped head for cutting through non woven materials vs. a standard needle, which is more flat and basically punches through woven fibers. I had an occasion years ago to make a costume almost entirely out of marine grade vinyl and it was tough going, especially when topstitching. I was really struggling until I asked a coworker (I worked at Hancock Fabrics once upon a time) and she suggested I put tissue paper under my project to prevent it sticking. It worked like a charm. Like you, I was having skipped stiches, but adjusting tension and stitch length weren't helping me much. The paper dropped skipped stitches to almost zero, except for the very thickest parts, where I was sewing straps made of the same vinyl over flat fold seams. I ended up hand stitching those few pieces. But tissue paper is a quick and cheap hack for "sticky" material. Also, super jealous of the Fabricator!

She doesn’t seem to have watched the videos for the Singer and I think they really matter. The Singer has two thread tensions (both upper and lower) which she could have adjusted to get something she like better for the denim, her needle exploded because just being a 16 doesn’t make it a good needle for denim, the faster a machine is the more issues the wrong needle will cause because drag becomes a bigger factor. I would have used an 18 for the denim test and a no. 20 leather needle for that test. Singers are beasts (I also have a 4423) but they rely on you knowing how your machine works.

@adbreon
@adbreon 3 жыл бұрын
@@meliarackliffe6342 The 4423 is not a beginner machine but its not an industrial machine either. That said, I like mine. I've never had any problems with it but I don't tend to have machine issues in general because I tend to do a lot of fabric/needle/thread swatching before I start projects and that usually keeps things from going off the rails. It has the usual problems that a top loading bobbin system can have (needle strike on the bobbin shuttle casing if the needle isn't seated properly, bobbin bounce) but again, watching all of the videos from Singer and getting to know your machine keeps that from being much of an issue. I wanted a metal frame without buying a European machine and I prefer mechanical machines because I am a garment sewist, not a quilter or embroiderer. It's also much easier to find someone who can fix a Singer than a Brother, at least in my area. My previous machine was a cheap Walmart special Brother that lived way longer than it had a right to. I replaced it because I couldn't find someone to do repairs or cleaning on the machine.

@@meliarackliffe6342I bought this machine it’s great. It does go really fast a bit intimidating at the start. I would have liked it to have a speed switch. It goes through thick things. The trick with thick fabric is to have a fabric at the back to even it up. I think this came with a plastic thing that helps with that and you can pop the needle in it to help you thread the machine. I like I can buy cheap feet for it at spotlight. My bernina a foot is over $100 this one about $20. I have used the heavy duty overlocker too and it was really nice to use, I haven’t bought that yet but found they are not selling them anymore

LOVE this review. I bought the Singer 4452 machine last year and I am quite pleased with it. I've often wondered how many layers of fabric it would sew through. But, don't think I'd ever need to sew ten layers of thick fabric like denim. Glad to know how I can actually do that with my machine, though. However, like you, I appreciate the fact that the Brother machine has a foot which goes up higher as it does on the one in your video, here. Now, that would be another feature I'd love to have on my Singer along with the auto foot - raise you said you would like to have. TYSM for taking time to make this informative video for us. Also, using denim needles and leather needles works alot better for both machines I'm sure. HLX5 needles also work well but the cloth specific needles are always the best way to go. Especially stretch needles for that stretchy fabric

After watching this video a few weeks ago I had to have one!! I was blessed to find a Brother ST371HD sewing machine today on FB market brand new in the box for an amazing price!! I haven’t used it yet but I can’t wait to try it out. I have another Brother sewing machine that I’ve had since 2006 but just started using it this year in May 🤦🏾‍♀️ but now I have 2 machines so I can start designing clothes for myself.

I love that you took the time to test both machines. I think that in both cases the thread tension, the needle and the feet used made the difference. I agree that the results were a bit surprising. Though I have a preference for Singer, Brother has stepped up their game "big time". What I DO NOT like from both machines and more modern machines in general is the shortness of the arm, what make them both for domestic purpose. Anytime you have a big project, you start wondering whether you should have a "beast" similar to the one you just acquired or not. The "beast" looks really good and I cannot wait for your reviews.

I love my Sailrite machine. The walking foot helps for thick layers. It is also for welt in the foot. You can purchase a larger welt foot from them. This is great for making furniture cushions, pet beds, etc.. If your looking to save money, buy a cone thread stand, and use cone thread. Sailrite has videos on how to make different things.

My only complaint about the Sailright is lack of a triple zigzag, it's normal zigzag/straight stitch only which was a deal breaker. That's an issue with tompson copies generally though. If someone would make a tompson clone with a triple zigzag sell a lot of them even if was at the expense of having a normal zigzag. It would be the perfect inexpensive (relatively) machine for sewing ripstop sailcloth.

@@atomicskull6405 I've always sewed commercial furniture, not clothing. I hope you can find the right machine for your purpose. I have to say for a home machine it's not bad for lighter weight commercial materials. I don't think it has enough presser for the heavy weight leather that i love to sew. Sometimes you have to adjust the pressure on one side of the 2 leathers for it to come even with each other. This pressure foot can't handle the resistance of the heavy, thick leather. It is pretty tough otherwise.

Loved your video.A quick tip when you are sewing stretch knits use a stretch needle lengthen the stitch length and use a very narrow zig zag or lightning style stitch. I had a singer for 18 years it burned out my Mama had one she used for 50 years. I use a Brother now. Its ok a lot of bells and whistles.But I am getting old and set in my ways old dog new tricks etc. keep movin and groovin and God bless you.

Great review. Beginner machines are great, especially if your not sure you will like sewing. But sometimes when an inexpensive machine doesn't perform as expected and is one challenge after another to finish a project it makes sewing more frustrating than joyful. The demand for sewing machines that make it easier to machine quilt has increased in recent years, so manufacturers have introduced new models to satisfy sewing wants and needs. Bernina's Stitch Regulator is one feature that helps even beginning machine quilters sew evenly spaced free motion stitches. Other sewing machine manufacturers have developed special presser feet to help quilters use their machines more easily, too

This will be so much nicer and faster than having to always hand stitch all of their clothes, arms, legs and doll bodies! Woohooo! I’m so excited!! 😆👍🏻 🧵🪡 ❤️❤️❤️

My DIL just bought a heavy duty Singer which I recently gave her a little help with. I think it's a good machine and believe that it handles thick layers better than the Singer model I have - but I have to admit that I've only used a number fourteen so far on mine - which conjures up thoughts of damage each time I go over seam crossings even of the quilting-quality cotton I use. It's okay because I know I won't - as most home sewists - ever need to go through eight or more laters of denim or leather even as it's good to know that a machine has that kind of power. I don't know that either I or she will ever need to sew anything at 1100 stitchers per minute as I have found that sewing slower gives one a lot of control over the stitching and the fabrics and have found that almost all of the experts I've watched recommend that that's what you should do. However, if you're doing production sewing than that's a different story. I also like the fuller area metal plate as I often wish my little pretty model had a much wider area for my magnetic stitch guide to adhere to. I would very much like more than the twenty-three decorative stitches I now have but don't use much anyway - so I can live without them. I think for the prices - each is a really good buy. Thanks for the comparison - a good watch!! Best and stay safe wishes to you and yours!

I agree with the slower-is-better-control mantra. I did production garment sewing for a couple years and the only time speed was super useful is when you have fold guide or such so you barely need to do anything but make sure it feeds clean. Then you can stand on the foot pedal and run 1000 peices. Now it is mostly making me and friends things that I want the best quality over quantity.

I use metal bobbins in my Singer 4452 and 4423 machines. I think they jump around less than the plastic bobbins. I have had the 4423's for years and really put them to the test, still going strong! I do like the color as it looks more industrial, but the white color machine is nicer looking in a sewing room. I keep my 4423 in my car for sewing onsite. PS- plastic is OFF for me too! 👍🏼

I have a huge collection of vintage singers, and 2 husqvarna machines. I got the singer heavy duty and I'm quite impressed with it. I use it to sew leather and vinyl handbags, wallets and such. It can handle anything I throw at it. And I LOVE that it came with the walking foot, the hump jumper, and basically everything you need. I literally sewed 3.5mm thick leathers with it like butter. I use microtex needles. This is my machine to abuse and not feel bad about it. As my others are too nice for that. A few tips, the feed dogs can be dropped the switch is on the back of the arm. Also, you can slow it down by adjusting it from inside the machine foot. And on the right side is an adjustment to make your buttonholes thicker or thinner

BlueprintDIY all of my current machines are brothers. I also have a brother serger which I love. My old singer though, (70’s), is awesome. My problem is both of my brother (1 is 4yrs old and the other is 3) machines are in the repair shop. I’ve been sewing on a much more regular basis and I guess they just couldn’t handle it. I made all of my kids clothes when they were little and now I’m making things for my 4 grandchildren. I also made a lot of masks for ppl and that’s when I started having trouble. They broke down within a month of each other and that’s when my old machine came out. I just bought myself a singer quantum 9960 and so far so good. It’s sooooo much quieter and smoother. Only time will tell just how good it is.
