Hey, I am also learning too as well. But based of what I have been learning is, checking account is basically where you put your money when you get paid or when you receive money from someone else. (Bank account is a general term for both deposit, savings and credit cards).

@@silencewithsolitude127as I understand it, an APY is the yearly interest that your bank pays you back for the money you have in your account. The more money in that account, the more that percentage has to work with to bring you more money. A good APY is around 4% these days. Checking account is what you use to pay off anything whether it be bills, credit card, fun stuff. Savings account is where you (as the name implies) keep and save your money for emergencies/upcoming big purchases

Should discuss deposit requirements - SoFi requires a direct deposit of 5k recurring monthly to qualify for their increased apy...No thanks.

IMO the best checking accounts for the average Joe are. -Amex -Discover -Schwab -Ally -Capital One 360 -Navy Federal CU -Alliant CU

Sorry, you lost me when you mentioned the Amex checking account. It’s probably one of the most barebones account on the market. No ability to deposit cash, no online bill pay, no Zelle and no cashiers checks.

All of those features will most likely be added in the future. Aside from that, Amex's account is almost entirely fee-free, modern, and even earns you points. Even more so, it helps to have a bank account with one of the four major card issuers, especially considering only two of them work directly with consumers. This is why Discover and Amex are probably the best banks when it comes to filing disputes. No middle man.

@@ChaseDizzieDiscover is great. AmEx’s checking product isn’t ready for prime time. Too many missing features. I mean, launching a 100% online checking account with no bill pay and no Zelle/Popmoney? What were they thinking?!

Betterment is one to mention because they may not have the interest on the checking but have a really high interest on savings and allow for cashback on your checking account on different popular brands.
