Mel Brooks taught me how to laugh ( him and the Monty Python troop) . 40+ years later and I can still sing 'The Inquisition Song' from memory. What a rare genius he is. His standup philosophy is what we need in the world now. He reminded us that it's good to be the King. Only a Miracle can save us. Maybe we all need to smoke some Roman Red, then walk around in a circle. My ultimate comedy double feature is History of the World part 1 and The Meaning of Life. Those two movies pretty much cover all the bases.

There was criticism for Mel Brooks's movies back when they were made. In fact, I've heard that when asked if he thought 'Blazing Saddles' could be made today he said "Well we couldn't make it back then but we made it anyway." Either way I think it's a good thing we're considering how appropriate or offensive a joke might be to other people, but I still find Mel Brooks's movies hilarious - always have, always will.

Mel Brooks movies are self-effacing but the cast is always a pastiche of diversity. My hope is that the cast was able to give representation authentically with the ability to laugh at themselves instead of just being paid to be laughed at. It would be offensive to deny their agency and demonstrate a naievete about the context of it's time if one were to speak on their behalf in feigned offense. It also deprives them the ability to be proud of their work. History of the World Part 1 is an enduring classic that makes history accessible to people who might not be exposed to it, otherwise. People should stop conflating their politics with shit-tier art criticism.

So the last few years of his life "was" a great musician applied as he no longer "is" until his death. When you no longer do something, You no longer are that. "Was"
