I bought an Ego LM2125SP the other day. I love everything about it. The convenience of not having to check/change/fill oil. Not having to store gas, add fuel stabilizer, and worry about bad gas by the end of the cutting season. It folds up compactly in my little 10x10 shed. Drop the battery in and start cutting. The self-propelled controls are nice and easy to use without having to really think about it. The quality of the cut is great (single blade model here) and I can cut my grass on my lot 3-4 times if needed on one charge of the 7.5AH battery. This is my first self propelled mower and I am sure the extra money spent will be well worth it once the Louisiana summer heat kicks in any day now. I love it so much, I am going back to Lowes this morning to pick up an Ego trimmer and blower. My mom and my sister each have a Kobalt push mower and neither have had any problems with them. They seem to be very capable machines.

I just got the Milwaukee mower today. Seems like everyone is complaining about the price without taking into account the batteries and glossing over the fact that it gets the job done without excuses. That’s what I wanted from a cordless mower and your review along with others show that is exactly what Milwaukee delivered. Thanks Rob and the rest of the crew for another detailed comparison video.

Other options also come with batteries that are pricey on their own, but cost less. But if you could use those larger batteries for other stuff like a Milwaukee cordless miter saw, that it certainly does offset the price a significant amount.
@entropic6957
@entropic6957 2 жыл бұрын
@@ccbowers Absolutely! One of my goals with this mower (and most tool purchases tbh) was to not need "get into" another battery platform just for OPE. I'm already deep into the m18 and m12 products and batteries. Like you said, being able to pop the 12s into a miter saw, table saw, angle grinder (for bigger jobs), or their other OPE -- ultimately saving time and allowing you to get done faster -- gives a much better value proposition.
@ccbowers
@ccbowers 2 жыл бұрын
@@entropic6957 Understandable. But I expect to always be in multiple platforms, because despite needing different batteries, you can end up saving money and also opening up your options for better tools under certain circumstances. I mean maybe 2-4 battery platforms, not the 8+ I'm currently in. There are many deals that come along that may be in a different platform or specific tool that is available only in one vs another. Or maybe a lower priced brand vs higher end, depending on your expected use. Those potential savings often pay for themselves in the long run,assuming you are buying wisely.

Have been looking at outdoor equipment for a while. Had used an electric corded in the past and bought another. But that was when I was a lot younger. That electric lawnmower works great. But the cord management is just too much, too heavy now. Working the cord is wearing me out. 12AWG heavy cord. Now looking for a battery powered one. This video was great. The amount of effort displayed to test, the layout of results. As an old math person your last graph was superb. This will make my next decision easier. Slightly surprised there was not a don't buy on any MFG. Great job keeping us Noobs aware. THANKS very much.

I bought an Ego about 4 years ago, based on all the buzz I had been hearing for a few years prior. And its a good mower. It gets the job done. However, after 1 year of very very minimal use, the (very expensive) battery wouldn't hold a charge for more than a few minutes. Fortunately, it was still under warranty, and the Ego people sent me a new battery pretty quickly, for free. So far, so good.

@@jsirivanchai I've heard nothing but great things about their service, that's why they're number 1 and everyone else is chasing them. I will give you to examples of my recent experience. I bought the mower with the 10Ah battery. It's advertised as a run time of 60-75 minutes. I was only getting 45 minutes. With that being said I was cutting weeds that were a foot tall. I called in and complained. They sent me a new battery and said keep the old one, have 2 batteries. Since I have my lawn under control and cutting it weekly that battery is getting about 70 minutes now that I'm cutting it at 4 inches. So that was my bad on that 1st battery complaint. My second experience that happened yesterday, I bought the multi head with the edger and weed trimmer attachment. I went to load the string and it didn't have the lines to line up with the eyelets to push the string all the way through. I searched KZfaq in every video I seen had them lines. I then looked in the manual and it had them lines too. So I called them and told them that my head did it match up with the manual or every video I seen on KZfaq. They apologized and said they are going to send me a replacement head out immediately. So 8 can say first hand my experience in the last 2 months has been above and beyond helpful. So much so I'm going to buy the new ego 52 inch zero turn as soon as Lowe's gets it in stock

@@eclecticgentleman, I had to call customer service several times to get a replacement. Before they issued the replacement they asked me to defeat the safety shutoff lever by strapping the lever down (which should never be a process requested by a manufacturer to a consumer) while the unit runs the battery down. They even suggested that I leave it unattended. If you don't believe the issues with customer support, check their BBB rating. Check other sources as well. Ego is getting hit hard with bad reviews for customer service, and I can say from experience that I agree with those reviews.

I recently tried 3 of these mowers. 1. Dewalt RWD with (2) 12Ah flexvolt batteries for $799. The DeWalt chokes out every 3 to 5 feet cutting my high grass/weeds. 2. Milwaukee for $1,099 it didn't choke out like DeWalt but I wasn't happy with the mulch mode. It left lumps of grass everywhere. Also on the DeWalt and Milwaukee my thumbs got tired from having to push the lever for self propelled. 3. Ego with (2) 10Ah batteries for $1,099. *In the review he used the 1 battery, with 2 you get double the run time that he mentioned in the video and moves into the #1 spot of all these mowers for the same price of the Milwaukee. The Ego is a beast and buttery smooth with excellent mulching. Also the Ego has the best buttons for self propelled. You don't have to use your thumbs. You use the palms of either hand. As a bonus the Ego is the only one that gives you a 5 year warranty on the battery and mower. Do your self a favor and get the best Ego

@@grego3762 I'm at DIYer and just like things that have a long life. For example, I'm into off road vehicles and the one thing off roaders hate are trucks that have too much electric or digital gizmos versus mechanical parts. you can work on mechanical things much easier than diagnosing an electrical or digital issue out in the middle of nowhere. This is why the off road community is not sold on electric trucks b/c many of us are not convinced they can hold up in the harshest of conditions and if anything goes wrong with vortec or LS engines or Allison transmissions, I know how to fix them and parts are readily available. Not so for electric vehicles. I thought about saving my peanuts to buy a Tesla Truck but I'm terrified of having an electric vehicle that becomes obsolete because they no longer make parts for or servicing the thing become unbearable. This is why I've been leery about switching to anything electric. I don't like things I can't fix myself.

You guys did a terrific job and spent a considerable amount of time reviewing these mowers. One question: Which mower cuts all the grass the first time and leaves little to no stragglers? I purchased the same EGO mower in your test 2 weeks ago and unfortunately had to return it because it left so many stragglers. I tried everything to make it work- slowing down, re-sharpening the blades, experimented with different cutting heights and also swapping the lower mulch blade with the lifter blade. Despite all of this, I still had to go over everything twice to get all the single grass blades left behind. Thanks again for the review! You just earned another subscriber.

The Ego 2156SP is hard to beat for commercial use, it's oddly better (probably because of weight) if you stack a spare battery between the battery compartment and handles on the very top of the unit. The curvature of that particular spot cradles the spare well with the battery shape. I'm a Milwaukee fan and I want to test out the new mower but the Ego 2156SP is hard to beat. Need to test the Ego with their 12AH battery and note the distance since the Milwaukee has the 12AH.

This was a great comparison! Liked. Obviously a lot of work went into it, yielding a lot of useful information. That said, at this point think I personally, and I’m guessing others, have seen about enough reviews at this point on battery life, how fast some dude can sprint through waist high weeds pushing two mowers, noise levels, etc. I think I’d like to see a comparison of just CUT QUALITY. That seems to be the biggest issue I have seen with some of the battery powered mowers and it seems to also be the one area that no one wants to really take the time to test and compare, much less in anything close to a semi-scientific way.

I've recently bought a mower in this category, and I think your findings are about right. The Milwaukee is probably the best, but expensive - while the Ego is very nearly as good but significantly cheaper. I ended up with the Ego purely because of that price difference - I'm really not convinced the extra money is worthwhile for the Milwaukee unless you're really pushing the mower hard I considered the fact that Milwaukee batteries are useful in more tools, but with the huge batteries and the way you use two of them I felt like I'd probably want to just keep dedicated batteries for the mower anyway, and it would be annoying trying to share them with other tools because of needing to keep them charged and balanced (eg if you use one battery for the string trimmer then you've effectively lost the runtime from both...) whereas the Ego can just share a battery with the string trimmer and you never have to think about it Plus if you have a smaller yard, you can drop down to the 17", 19", or 20" Ego mowers and get the same features/quality for even less money

I'm in the market for a new cordless mower. FYI I have used the black and decker for the past 4 seasons. I would not purchase it again, even though it has several nice features for my current personal needs. The good with the B&D I have 2 lawns to mow, one at my home which is maybe 700 to 1000 SQ Feet, and at my seasonal campsite which is about the same. It's light, it folds up nicely and the height adjustment is great. The Bad: Battery life is not good. I also have a B&D blower, chain saw and string trimmer. I got batteries with each, and 2 with the mower. Out of the 5 batteries, 2 died and will not charge within 18 months of purchase. The others 4 years in are close to the end of their life. The other thing that is bad is (I'll try and explain so it makes sense) Mowing power. If you have 6" tall grass, and set your deck at the 4" height, it bogs out and stalls. So if you have 5" grass and mow to 4" you're good, but only being able to mow less than 2" without stalling is the main reason why I will not purchase again. After watching this (and a few other videos) I was considering the Stihl or the Milwaukee. The Sthil (460) is $399 but it has another battery system. Now I have since I got the B&D purchased Milwaukee, String trimmer, Blower, hedge trimmer and LED magnetic light. All of my Milwaukee batteries are still in perfect shape. The mower is overkill for my current needs, but we are planning a move within a year or so to a new state and will be buying property with a bit more yard. So though the Milwaukee is double the money, based on my current and possible future M18 and M12 battery usage (I have some M12 tools as well) AND add to that the property we have is a 3 family which we live in one unit, I can claim 2/3 of the purchase price directly on my taxes. So the Milwaukee wins.

I used the makita “pro” for a few weeks this fall. Its self propel slows significantly as the batteries drain, its ramp speed is terrible on self propel. I measured 2mph on full speed self propel while under load cutting tall grass on weakening batteries. This mower is badly limited by its 36v of 18650 cells. I just grabbed a Honda $550 gas mower and it’s night and day: power and instant acceleration. Realistically you gotta pay a thousand bucks for a good battery mower now-2x a comparable gas. If n

Why do you say that? You obviously haven’t used any of their products, e.g. weed trimmer with carbon fiber shaft, mower with aircraft aluminum grade handle, tool quality polymers, fast charger with blue tooth wireless connectivity. I’m invested in Milwaukee, with the only deviation being half my OPE. I have the EGO mower with 10 amp battery and weed trimmer and the Milwaukee Fuel Gem 1 and 2 blowers and M18 Fuel Hedge Trimmer. The EGO weed trimmer has an auto string winder, which is very cool. I bought the weed whacker at Home Depot for $60.00, as they were getting rid of their EGO inventory. I bought the EGO Select Cut mower at Lowes for $649.00, after haggling with them. I think they’re selling now for $799.00. So I definitely got worth what paid for. I don’t own any Festool, but my Milwaukee M12 Fuel Installation Driver smokes the similar Festool driver. You just thought you’d type a cute comment….

When it comes to the Makita pro mower….with experience in landscaping, I can say that having a folding mower is definitely an asset. Things get damaged when they roll around and aren’t secured. Sure, you can tie it up but it’s not as compact and secure as a mower with the handle folded and secured to the wall. You can also easily send a guy out in a car or van with the folded mower in the back. Just good for thought.

“Blade speed is critical for a clean and fast cut” .. I could not agree more and that’s why I took my Ego select-cut back as it only spins at 2,700 - I replaced it with the EGO steel deck and it’s RPM is 3,150 and I also installed twin blades … it only now comes close to a Honda commercial mower in performance! Commercial mowers spin at above 3,000 rpm to enable a clean cut without leaving stragglers, and to enable a fast job - time is money! However the only metric the Ego steel deck with twin blade modification cannot come close to in the Honda commercial mower is “energy density” or runtime - there’s over 40 times more energy in one Kilogram of fuel than one kilogram of lithium batteries.

I just bought the Ryobi you tested here and overall I am fairly happy with it but only used it once so far for my initial spring cutting and leaf cleanup. I needed another battery to finish the job. Two things that annoyed me you didn't really mention in your reviews for all mowers was needing to engage the blades to use the drive feature. This combined with having to push AGAINST the motors makes it really inconvenient to move the mower around while NOT mowing or if the batteries die. As far as rating them I think you need some kind of grass cut/dollar ranking. The Ryobi is expensive because about $500 of the cost is two 6AH batteries plus a rapid charger. The mower itself is only $300. The cheap mowers in your pack wouldn't handle a very big yard and buying enough batteries for larger yards should be factored in somehow to ranking. What I am puzzled about is huge difference in mowing per watt hour, it just doesn't make sense why the Ryobi seems so inefficient. Is the drive consuming all that power?

was not expecting m18 mower; it really shows that they are actually using R&D to do enough research and have the battery economy to make a product like this; if you are not able to get batteries from a 8 year old platform then you are generally are not looking hard enough; the mower is only sold in a kit which is the problem

Excellent review (so thanks for the hard work and dedication). Spoiler alert: Best Ranking @ 25:44. I had already opted to go with the #3 overall Ryobi AWD (since I'm heavily invested in the Ryobi ecosystem, so battery runtimes were essentially irrelevant with backup batteries galore), and enjoyed the confirmation bias I got here. If it were just a tad faster it'd be perfect.

I am 6'3" and find that most (including my gas Toro with the horrible height adjustments) are designed for shorter people. My back complains about stooping for short handles. I have looked at machines in stores EGO seems adjustable higher than others that I have seen. I saw handle height wasn't covered and appreciate that it would be impossible to cover all factors. I liked that EGO scored well with your ergo category as that is probably the most important to me, assuming a good cut. As you mentioned, I am well invested with many DeWalt tools and was hopeful, but in every review DeWalt has ranked poorly.

Very disappointed that more attention was not paid to knowing under difficult conditions. For instance, many years ago I had a B&D 40v mower, if I didn't cut my grass every 3 days in the spring the mower would not handle it. I would end up having to make 1/2 wide passes so that the mower would not shut down. I also think you should have given the motor specs per unit. For instance, my first ego SP unit had a 1000 watt motor, my current ego select cut which I upgraded to last year I believe has a 1500 watt motor. And that thing will cut down anything. Giving the motor wattage would also help to show why some mowers batteries don't last as long as others, and it goes back to what I said about pushing the mowers into more aggressive cutting situations as mowers with higher xapacity motors can cut through more neglected conditions. I do want to point out that on my new ego select cut, I don't like the recessed levers that engage the self propelled feature. As I get older arthritis makes it difficult to grab the handle and keep depressing the levers, not sure if any of your guys complained about that. Lastly, you made a big deal about speed. Mower speed is irrelevant, if you cut too fast your cut quality is going to suffer. Although in the end I guess none of that matters as 90% of people don't know how to mow a lawn. They cut it far too short, far too often further stressing the lawn and with blades that are waaaay overdue for a sharpening.
@ConcordCarpenter
@ConcordCarpenter 2 жыл бұрын
Good points on offering the watts but I think you're in the minority on that. Most people don't care - they want to know how much grass it will cut. As far as difficult grass - this grass was 7" tall and damp when we started, I think we had that covered.
