00:51 Key factors to determine what are the best countries to retire in Europe
-Low taxes on pensions and investments
-Easy to acquire a residence permit if you are not an EU citizen
-High quality of life (health care, infrastructure)
-Favorable climate (ideally avoiding extreme cold or hot weather)
-Safety
-Affordable cost of living and property market.
02:13 Portugal
Relatively easy for non-Eu citizens to acquire residency in Portugal if they receive a foreign pension. The financial requirements are lower than in Spain, Italy or Greece.
NHR - non-habitual residency program that can reduce your tax rate significantly for up to 10 years (program is changing)
One of the best climates in Europe year round
Expensive property market in Lisbon, affordable elsewhere
Direct flights to the US, UK, most countries in Europe and Brazil
04:10 Greece
New scheme - 7% tax on foreign pensions (for countries which have a bilateral tax agreement with Greece - US included)
Safe country, full EU member, part of the Schengen area and the eurozone.
Affordable real estate even in the capital Athens, prices per square meter are lower than in most other European capitals
Relatively easy to get a residence permit if you are a financially independent person (and not an EU citizen).
05:36 Italy
Italy is one of the most iconic tourism destinations in the world.
What people often don’t know is that you can move to Italy as a retiree, even if you are not an EU citizen.
The residence permit to live in Italy as a retiree is called Residenza elettiva or elective residency.
Financial requirements are higher than Portugal, but comparable to Spain to obtain this residence permit (only if you are a non-EU citizen).
Quality of life is high in Italy, especially in the Northern part of the country, which has one of the best transport infrastructures in the continent.
Italy is a great choice if you want to enjoy its idyllic landscapes, delicious cuisine and unparalleled cuisine.
Italy is, however, the most expensive country in this list. For that reason, if you are considering retiring in Italy prepare your pockets. Nevertheless a great country to spend any period of your life.
06:36 Spain
Spain is another popular option if you want to retire in Europe
Affordable cost of living, EU and Schengen area member.
Spain has some of the best health care systems in the world
There are residence permits available for non-EU citizens retirees. But the income requirements you need to show are higher than in some other countries in this list. Currently, you need to show an income of roughly 2500 USD per month to be able to apply for a residence permit as a retiree in Spain.
Property prices are appealing in Spain, if we compare it to other countries in Western Europe. While Madrid and Barcelona are quite expensive, most other cities and regions in the country are quite affordable, both for renters as buyers.
07:30 Montenegro
9% flat tax on all types of income (including pensions)
Buying property grants you the right to acquire residence (no minimum).
There is still a citizenship by investment program in Montenegro, but it is due to end soon.
You can also acquire a residence permit by opening a company (as a self-employed person or hiring staff).
08:52 Serbia
One of the most underrated countries in Europe
The capital Belgrade offers the best value for the money in Europe - affordable cost of living and real estate, with a good infrastructure and safety.
Private health care is extremely affordable and is of great quality
Easy to acquire residency through a real estate purchase (no minimum) or opening a company.
Privileged location in Central Europe.
Belgrade offers excellent connectivity to most cities in Europe, and even year round direct flights to the US.
10:00 Bulgaria
Bulgaria has the cheapest residence permit in the European Union for retirees. The financial requirements to retire in Bulgaria are much lower than in countries like Spain, Italy or Greece. It is cheaper than Portugal also.
Bulgaria is the cheapest European Union country when it comes to real estate. You can live in a big house in Bulgaria for a fraction of what it would cost in Spain, Italy or Portugal.
Bulgaria is definitely the best country to retire in Europe if you want to save money, as its cost of living is also the lowest in the European Union.
Despite its relatively small size, Bulgaria has some of the most diverse landscapes in Europe, with mountains, plains and beautiful beaches on the Black Sea.

I discovered that The US has a "no double taxation treaty" with Bulgaria, so you can only be taxed in America on your pension. I also emailed The National Revenue Office in Bulgaria, asking them about taxing my pension, and they replied, "US Social Security pensions are tax exempt in Bulgaria". So, I'm Varna bound in a year....

@OG_Wonder_Woman
@OG_Wonder_Woman 2 жыл бұрын
@@preciousg1rl Depends, are you looking for a small village or a big city? It's a small country so if you want the metropolitan assets of a city, your choices are limited to Porto, Coimbra and Aveiro (assuming Lisbon is too expensive). I need the healthcare services in a city so I've focused on which cities to live near. Porto is the biggest, has everything, including the airport. Coimbra has the University, great for an academic type. Plus it has the center hub for the trains, one of which runs to Madrid, then to Paris. Aveiro is the Venice of Portugal and is flat and easy to walk, plus very nice coastal weather. It just depends on what you are looking for. But I agree the Algarve is not a great option due to heavy tourism and high prices on real estate. Too hot for me too. Now, if you are looking for a small village or town and you love nature, Portugal has tons of options for great prices. Just rent first because if you have only 50 or 100 neighbors, you better fit in!
@preciousg1rl

@@OG_Wonder_Woman thanks for those tips! I'll definitely check them out. The original plan was to rent for a year and travel all over to get a feel of the country. So maybe close to the airport or train. I love the idea that trains are easily accessible and connected to another country. Can't wait!

I am wondering how the tax on retirement/investment income works? If I collect my pension and investment income in Canada and pay taxes on that here, do i have to declare that amount to the country I've chosen? Or do i divert my income to the new countries banking system and just pay the tax once? In Canada my pension income is deducted right at source. I dont think i can avoid that. As a 70 years old retiree this heat means: Stay from June to September in your home with AC or you are risking your live. Even as young people you feel like a grilled chicken if you only walking down the street to catch some food. So I think that's why he tolled in the disclaimer at the beginning of the video that he is not considering countries with extream high heat or cold.

That's not really true. Within the EU there are countries with specific retirement visas for non-EU citizens, such as Portugal, Latvia or Bulgaria. Portugal, I dismissed the country, high property prices, but also high property taxes. Income taxes is one item to consider but other taxes are also important. Why not mention the high property taxes. I live in Hungary (not mentioned amazingly). The overall cost of living and more importantly quality of life (and the cost attached) should be mentioned. Bottom line do not only refer to income tax but also other taxes. I will NOT take your suggestions (too basic)
@traveleconomics

Hungary is one of my favorite places indeed. But first of all, it doesn't have a specific retirement residence permit class for non-EU citizens. Taxes in Portugal are indeed high, but it does not affect pensioners much as they mostly qualify for the NHR program in Portugal that involves either low or non-existent taxes for first 10 years. Quality of life in Portugal is amazing though (and so it is in Hungary). The worst about Portugal are definitely property prices especially in the Lisbon area.

Does not qualify because of high taxes. Would be a great place for a second home if you are tax resident elsewhere. The biggest mistake when choosing and country for retirement is simply by costs of living. As a retiree you are one of the most voulnabre persons and more depend on some factors than young persons. Factors as like...: Infrastructure Publuc Transportation Security and moat important Health care system ...are more important than most expect. So it should be made clear if the health care insurance covers ecerything you need....from a cold to accidents but also cancer treatments. Just because of that I would take countries as like Bulgaria out of this list. The infrastructure and health care is horrible. As an old person you will be lost in this high corrupt system. Also as an old retiree you need to see more beauty in live. Bulgaria and Servia as post communist countries are just simply depressive. Old post soviet ugly rotten archtitecture, muddy roads and clowdy skies. An all day and allaround color mix of grey and brown. Greece is cheap and the weather is great but the health care in this poor country is a nightmare. Tens of thousands doctors and nurses left the country for north and west europe during the crisis. The beaches will not compensate the lack of health care when you really need it. Within europe I would consider Portugal Spain Slovenia In some cases may be croatia. If we would take the range just little further I would also add Turkey on this list. It his highly popular especially within Reitrees of german speaking countries. It has agreements with the EU for double taxation and health insurances....which means that EU (at least those countries I know) can use the turkish public hospitals by their home country insurance. At least in the touristy south coast you will have no problem by using english or german.

We all eventually retire someday. With retirement comes other issues. I think we all look for a great place to live at a price that doesn’t eat away at your life saving. I’m a little nervous about places that are super affordable because it draws the retirees that basically did poorly in their lives because of poor personal choices. Only having $1,000 a month to retire on is unimaginable to me. It also tells me this person didn’t live very well in their productive years. I know there are always exceptions. Albeit I live on about $1500 here in the US because I don’t have any long term bills. I’ve traveled to many countries and enjoyed their beauty, novelty and cultural differences but at the end of the day I personally enjoy going to and hanging out with people who I can communicate with. There is no way I going to learn a foreign language with the few years I have left and without the ability to properly communicate life starts losing it’s luster. I’m also not very tolerant with simple incompetence or feelings of entitlement given off by some. I respect people but don’t owe anyone anything more than common courtesies. I’m not looking to take advantage of anyone and don’t like anyone trying to take advantage of me. For all these reasons I’m realistic enough to realize I’m best off in my own country where I have no questions about how to get by. Of course day dreaming, fantasizing and wanderlust will forever keep us searching.
