Got to agree with you one hundred percent! Despite the inclement weather and the midges, Scotland is an amazing place. I’ve been going up there for 45 years, and when I’m not there, I’m already planning to go back! Thanks for sharing.

I've cycled all over Scotland from the Cairngorms, Arran and the nc500. I've loved every minute of it, it does help that I'm based near Edinburgh so fairly central, planning on doing the Hebridean way in June and cannot wait.

Good points well made. Scotland is a country you can keep going back to and see new and different things every time. We love holidaying there in our campervan, but these days we try to visit out of the main tourist season when it's calmer and more relaxed.

Yup, Scotland is hard to beat .... if the weather's kind. If all goes well, wife and I are planning on spending at least 6 weeks cycling there during April and May then hopefully going back for more in September, early October ❤️ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I've had some of my best and worst holidays in Scotland. More bad than good, completely ruined by bad weather and midges. I abandoned Scotland some years ago and started touring in Switzerland, Fantastic nationwide network of cycle routes, both on and off road and backed up by mountain huts and hostels, with plenty of camp sites in the valleys.

Yes I get where you’re coming from there. Had my worst day on a bike cycling from Inverness to Bettyhill. Switzerland sounds great! Done a small amount of riding there but never done a bikepacking adventure. Where would you recommend?

Coming from Scotland I would agree Scotland is amazing for bike packing, I would also suggest Albania, it feels like going back in time. Korea is has great cycling touring routes and amazing food.

France has some sensational bits but the heat can be too much of a good thing. Scotland often has alternatives to the main roads. Parts of the Highland Trail 550 can be done on a 4 pannier touring bike. No need for LEJOGgers to use the A9 unless pushed for time.
@Cycling366

Agree with you there! Love France and the sunshine but Scotland’s magic is partly down to the weather. :)

I ❤ Scotland as well but would like to try Green Velo in the North of Poland along the forests sea and dunes…I am from North mid 🇵🇱 so would be good to do the route one day. From May/June the weather is warm though could be stormy. Good luck !

Criteria No. 7 - lack of bugs. That and No. 6 are where Scotland struggles. Though iffy weather usually means no midges. 😄 Otherwise it's rather lovely.
