Mint is one of the most popular crops for commercial hydroponic growers because it's always in high demand at restaurants, bars, and grocery stores. The mint they sell in clamshells is a shadow of what it used to be before it was harvested. Hello , first of all - big thanks for doing this.. you really really helpful. Could you please help me resolve my few doubts.. If I'm growing tomatoes in cocopeat medium, should i be circulating nutrient solution every day three times ? Wouldn't over fertilize and wilt? Or should i be feeding nutrient solution once or twice a week and feed rest of the time water?? I'm doing soilless tomato growing in cocopeat and im afraid of over fertilizing ? Pls help since its hydroponics method nutrient water feeding 3 times a day makes sense but will it cause over fertilizing? Many thanks in advance..

If you're growing those plant with a vertical system, why do you need to make a gap between one zipgrow to another? You can make it more dense if you eliminate the gap between one zipgrow to another isn't it?

Hi +wesley taller - Any system will grow mint, but obviously we're a little biased towards growing in ZipGrow Towers since that's the solution we developed to help folks like you grow more of whatever crop you're wanting to grow.

I think that there is an opportunity, when it comes to choosing (or even better offering) the right mint! Doesn't matter if true or not... but especially when it comes to cocktails and ethnic cooking, specific mints are usually used - and would have an USP, if offered. E.g. Spearmint is the mint, usually used in juleps, yerba buena (Cuban mint) is usually used for mojitos and Cuban mojo sauce. Obviously unique mints like chocolate mint, pineapple mint, would further sell for a premium, if properly marketed. It is surprising, that farmers are reacting so slow for the trends....

+Dominik MJ (opinionated alchemist) You are so right! Being able to supply ultra fresh, but super rare mint varieties puts the farmer and his/her crops in very high demand with the right chef/bartender! Are you growing any of these currently?

Yeah - I do have a "balcony planter" with mint. Unfortunately I could not get my hand on "yerba buena" or anything cool in Dubai - where I am living. And lemon balm in the same planter was "killed" by my mint. You are so right, that mint is unstoppable, as soon as gained momentum... :)

+Owen Berry you can if need be. If they are fresh, they’ll root out. I’d also start a significant amount of seed to maintain some vigor in your cuttings over time. Hope that helps!

To get rid of the chlorine I'd suggest investing in a reverse osmosis filter, that way you will purify your water. They're quite cheap and effective. As for temperature - I'm afraid mint prefers cooler temperatures, so you'd have to have air conditioners in your growing area. I believe electricity is quite cheap in some Middle Eastern countries so it could be economically profitable.

We are not currently growing mint, but mint does very well in our system. In the past we've tried common mint, peppermint, spearmint, as well as some specialty flavours as well. they are all well suited for vertical growing and being harvested many times. Since they are typically an invasive species, the Tower separates them from spreading over other crops, it keeps them contained. 🙂

What's the EC for Mints in an NFT system

Hello Omar, thanks for the comment. Mint performs well between EC’s of 1.30 - 1.40µS/cm. It’s a low growing crop and doesn’t require much demand for higher EC’s. However, mint tolerates EC’s of up to 2.0µS/cm, which will push the crop into a bushier state. A higher EC would simply require more time to be spent on harvesting and pruning.

Sure, but could you sell the crops for the price you need to in order to justify the additional electricity needed for the lights and the cooling?

Nah man, just get a bunch of solar garden lights from a bulk sale, break them up, mind you can get them at 0.40 pence each, so you can get about 100 of them, for around £70, unscrew the solar cells (Made in china so that won't be hard) and fix them together and make sure they all run on the same electrical circuit. By then you should have a good decent sized solar panel with each cell powering a led at bright, so around 100 LEDS being lit throughout the night on a good battery. Which would equate to around 3 - 7 grow lights.

I can get about 300 for £150 or just go to your normal yank stores (Walmart) and pick a few up or this radio shack which is the equivalent of our B&Q :)
