We used to stuff onion bags or burlap sacks with grocery bags. It worked surprisingly well to stop arrows, especially if it was suspended. The lightweight targets would stop the arrows, even if you missed the thickest center part, by rolling with the shots.

Great video! I was wondering how to go about building my first target that wouldn't ruin my arrows. As soon as you said pallet wrapping, well, I work in a factory where we throw that stuff away, so I knew I could get all that I needed for free. Plus I used the wood pallet to build a box frame 700mm × 700mm × 200mm. For the front and back faces I also used a huge bulk bag from work that we also throw away. It's made of the same fibrous plastic material as tarps. I put it all together the same as yours, and it stops arrows perfectly. I was worried about pass throughs and ruining my fletchings, but the arrows stop about 3 inches in. That's using a 40lb recurve at 15 to 20 meters. I have the bonus of having dual face, now that I know the arrows don't pass through. So when one face is worn out, I'll just spin it around and use the other side. Top target!!

I was about to waste a stupid amount of money here in Norway to get a decent target because my first attempt of making a DIY one was a disaster (I used small branches from bushes in my garden to fill it). I never thought of using plastic and it seems perfect for the wet weather and wet grass I use to have around! Thank you!!!

Brilliant! I've been stockpiling plastic bags, bubble wrap, plastic packaging, etc, and some cardboard boxes, but this seems like it would be simpler and have better longevity. I might try it with a large rectangular Rubbermaid container. When not in use, I could probably squeeze the lid on and set it upright to keep it dry.

That's brilliant Kev! Thank you. The only downside is that it makes me feel like a fool. I spent 1200 kronor on a target this year. That's about 120 euro I think, I'm going to save a lot of money in the future thanks to this video. I've been trying all sorts of things to do my own target, and I must admit that I just got tired of it, so I bought one instead. This one looks like an easy way to do for myself. So again, thank you Kev! Greetings from Sweden

Great ideal plus on the cheap for those that don't want to drop a lot of cash. Seen a lot of DIY on targets for Archery and most get into a lot of work or required power tools. Not to mention a long list of materials to buy that can really increase the cost to manufactured models seen in stores or in online shops. I think a few who have posted below have missed the point. Clearly this is just a ideal where one can modify to fit his or her needs. Anyways, great ideal @Robin Hood Archery!

Been using mine for a few months now, works amazing! 🏹 I've put the target inside the house after im done shooting, so it should last forever. Sometimes theres little pieces of plastic on the arrowhead, but this depends on the filling used and how messes up it gets after hundreds of shots, might have to change it at some point, but that's easy.

I've made a similar target, mine is an oblong frame made of scrap 12mm ply roughly 90cm x 60cm x 30cm with chicken wire stapled to the front and back faces and stuffed with pallet plastic before stapling squares of builder bag over the wire. Lasts for ages and enough to easily stop a 40lb recurve/ 125lb crossbow. The last one was made with scrap from the work skip and cost nothing but time!

Yep, made these for years with plastic shopping bags. Have made a PVC frame/box 3’ x 3’ x 1.5’ with legs out of hardware store PVC plumbing parts covered with burlap and stuffed with bags. The only issue is if you shoot tight groups. Each arrow compresses the material and each successive arrow goes a little deeper until they start to punch holes out thru the back. They work well But even with plastic you want to put a rain cover/roof over them as they will collect water and get heavy and nasty...

I like this target idea better than having to build a box but I'll have to see if I can find a tub like that here in the U.S...probably. I'll have to admit, I had to go look up what "Hessian" is. I thought a Hessian was someone from the German State of Hesse, silly me. Of note, it is boat launching season here in the area surrounding the Chesapeake Bay where we live and that means lots of used plastic shrink wrap. People winterize their boats here using shrink wrap coverings, terrible from a plastics in the landfill point of view but I think it will work great to stuff a target. Thank you for the video and idea!

It works very well for my 30 lbs bow and the target is still in use - only had to replace parts of the surface a few times. I was quite surprised how fast the material catches the arrows. They only go in a few centimeters. Very easy and cheap to build and maintain. Perfect :)

I made a similar target with collected styrofoam cups but your idea inspired me to use a 50 lb. Dog food bag for a skin. Cut in half it is a about 30 inches x 30 inches. The large bags are Similar to the blue IKEA bags - a woven blue plastic material. It works great because I made 3 Orc targets out of these bags with pvc pipe spines when my kids were little. My kids loved shooting them but eventually I ended up hitting the "spine" with a bigger bow and "paralyzing" the bugger.

Here is an idea for you to try instead of the cd. Some businesses get goods shipped on pallets where a thin cardboard is used between the goods and the pallet. How about using the cardboard as a stencil to paint the concentirc circles on the material you use for a target. Or even as a replaceable target in itself that can be pinned to the base target you are using and talked about in the video.

Great idea Kev. Thank you for putting this on here. I like using different parts of my targets as it helps make them last longer and can be fun. I use stick on smilies I get from the pound shop. You get two sizes and six colours. I put six of each colour on the target scattered around and try to get all of one colour, two into one then two singles then back to first. This is not only fun it also helps with making adjustments like you would if you missed a 3D or center of a target. Also making my homemade boss longer. I have just one question on what was the plastic you used to fill the target. Thanks again for sharing this

I use old carpet cut into 1meter long, 15 cm wide, tightly stacked in a frame. Add more layers if you are using powerful bows. The arrows will stick between the layers of carpet, and since it is only the friction between the layers stopping your arrow, the target lasts forever, and the arrows come out easily.

i can get around a big palm sized group at my best often twice as large spread but not better than that at 18 meter or 20 yards i shoot with both eyes open without aiming/using the point tip for reference. At around 15 yards and in ward i can hit palm sized nearly everytime and at 10-12 yards i can nearly robin hood my arrows. Now i have only shoot 4 times. But i want to start off right learn good habits and dont learn bad stuff. I am shooting tre under with a tab. Using a black sheep nova recurve bow only thing i could afford with skylon frontier carbon arrows. How do i get good and most important consistent everytime because out of 6 arrows maybe one or two are like maybe 10 inches of where i aim sometimes when i get a little tired.

There is an even cheaper and just as effective way, that is more enviro friendly. Cardboard , just laminate with wall paper paste to atleast 10cm thick (depending on bow weight ! Justv pin your target face to it. make sure all surrounds are soft in case you miss and to prevent ricochets!

@@CameronStewartDC Hello, yes it is really easy. You get hold of waste cardboard boxes , the larger and thicker the better, those from any appliances that you may have had delivered are ideal. You then stick them together with paste. You need a thickness of atleast 10cm upto 20cm which will stop any weight of bow.The finished square will absorb the force of any arrow without damage and are used around many field archery courses around this country. When it gets soft you just add another layer of cardboard. you can insert this into a complete box full of old material as an added back stop if required. Regards Derek
