I'm in Western Canada and still doing research - with only a few due to arrive mid May. So I've got a brooder in process and a while yet to build a coop; I sure like this idea for the roll-away design and until a while ago - I didn't even know such a thing existed. So - I've got a lot to learn!

@@hatleyhomestead Yes, I agree. And I want the nesting boxes inside - easier to heat in the winter (if I decide to add light in there). I'll plan the coop size to accommodate that. I see 99% of nesting boxes with TOP opening lids. I am not going to do that - I hope to have mine open at the rear because their predators come mostly from above so they are programmed to freak when startled from above. Now that I'm planning on integrating this type of collection box as well. I look forward to your video on it.

You did such a good job explaining the build except for the floor pieces. You didn’t say anything about the angle, or why you did that as separate floor pieces instead of cutting the angle and doing it as one sheet. I feel like that’s the most crucial part of this whole build. How did you measure the angle for that slant? How long are those pieces? How did you secure it? Why are there little triangles on the bottom?

Not a dig here. I am no shop teacher. But see room for some improvement for power saw safety. Ex. Table saw use first cuts. think the push stick need to be in left hand that is closer to the blade. Not in right hand that is farther from the blade. With circular saw try putting long boards over saw horses and a few stringers at 90 degrees to those to hold work up above support boards. Better done than not done at all. Just be safe. I like the saw jig.

A slightly modification on your design; Eliminate the "Tongue on your side and dividers. Have one common area for collection. Plenty strong, but If you're worried about strength or warpage, throw a 1x2 under the back edge. An adjusted layout on the plywood will give you' A Solid Back, Top, and Floor. Ends and divider can "share" a single floor cut to obtain the slant. The "tongue" on the end walls (only) is made from a piece of 3" wide x the floor length of "scrap" plywood. Attached to the Inside wall. The resulting layout will give you less wastage, and an equally strong design. And still use 1 sheet of plywood (or less) A quick swap in pieces, and widths will give you a "Rear Collection" Nest Box.
@hatleyhomestead
@hatleyhomestead Жыл бұрын
I have actually made this modification. If you look at some of our shorts, I had to make this design a rear collection box so it would work on our mobile coop. It works great and all I had to do was take the rear face off and make a 2-by face frame. It works awesome! I should probably make a dedicated video.

The entire thing needs a total redesign. Best plans need to be repeatable, easy to follow, least amount of waste, fewest cuts, and be easy to assemble. This "best" must be sarcastic. You are close to it being better but eliminate the "tongues" completely. Build the bays separately and make the rollout and catch tray separate. With one sheet of plywood you can make 2 4ft boxes.

I'm thinking, when installing the back flat to a wall, the bottom which is already sloped forward, will make an egg roll in that direction

This sure seems like EXACTLY what we NEED!! I am tired of trying to weed out the chicken/s who are eating the eggs! So can you please give us an update on how it is working? I wonder about bedding in the box?? Don't you use some? If so then won't it hinder the egg to roll away? What does keeps the eggs from breaking when they roll away?? I feel like I need more info before we build this. Thank you!

This is a lot of wasted wood and too much cutting. Title is far beyond exaggeration.

I'm planning on building one for my hens but I'll make the egg hatch in the back so it can be mounted outside of the house

poor design. So your chickens poop all over the egg catch lid.

@@hatleyhomestead Good plan. I am no carpenter and did all my cutting with a circular saw and the attachment. Works great but I would suggest extending the 6 inch safe egg area to 8 or 10 inches. I have had a few times that eggs will stack 2 deep and a hen will still reach under and eat one. Got my lumber today to build another one for my other coup. Thank you.
