I get how guidance works for clerics, but I've seen it abused by players. Also, thematically, casting guidance on yourself for help with things your PC doesn't know seems silly to me. It's like the PC is either misusing thier ability or has now real faith.

Why no thorn whip for the druid, it's literally the only class to get the cantrip and it's a great deal more iconic the magic stone (which is on half the spell lists). And what about the classic Mage Hand, didn't even get an honorable mention. What's going on here!

One of my favorite cantrip moments involved Magic Stone. My arcane trickster needed an effective distraction to break into a house where a noble's daughter was being held captive. He gathered several children and convinced them to throw the stones at the dude guarding the door, because he was a jerk to them. The kids ended up knocking him out, drawing the attention of the town watch. My character then breaks into the house, with the guards out front and releases the druid (hiding as a mouse in his pocket). She shifts into a grizzly bear, mauling another bandit and raising enough hell to draw the watch inside. My burglar then spiderclimbs up the wall and locks all the bandits out of the room where they held their captive. He cuts her free and ducks out of the window. My rogue (who has... a few warrants) then draws the attention of the soldiers, allowing the druid to escape. The two meet up later, learning that the guard can't decide whether to implicate my character or not, after the woman's testimony. Thus my rogue maintained his rep as a ne'erdowell, and the watch raided a trafficking hub.

Haha what...gotta disagree with some of these. Thorn Whip has tons of utility both in and out of combat and is my pick for druids. Pulling dudes through Spike Growth? Yes please. Toll the Dead is great for clerics - I find Spare the Dying can just be replicated with healer's kits and medicine checks (though the Bonus Action Spare the Dying at range Grave Clerics get is very good). I agree that Shocking Grasp is great as a way to do damage and debuff, but Poison Spray is junk - the range is bad, poison is highly resisted (many monsters flat out immune) and it's a Con save so it rarely does anything.

I wonder how many players know you're never allowed to change your cantrips ever, RAW. I never really thought about it until I started playing an artificer, which has "The Right Cantrip for the Job" at 10th level, which allows you to change cantrips after a short or long rest.

Why is it a problem? If you picked cantrip that doesn't scale, its your fault, but usually you just pick the best ones that'll stay relevant until the end, or the ones that cover a situation that happens often. Honestly, i dont know what's use of "right cantrip for the job", maybe swapping damage cantrips depending on the resistance of enemies that you're expecting to see.

Mage Hand is kind of the necessary default for Arcane Trickster, much like Eldritch Blast is for Warlock. That said, Booming Blade is actually also excellent for them. Rogues tend to get one or two attacks anyway, a melee cantrip just makes that hurt all the more- it doesn't interfere with Sneak Attack. Combine Booming Blade with a bonus action disengage...? They can try to come get you for more damage or just sit there hating you.

Rubens Martins de Carvalho because it doesn't need one. If you're fighting in melee, you can simply say that you are not trying to kill them, and when they drop, they automatically stabilize. You can't do it with ranged attacks (though I'd probably allow it if the attack deals bludgeoning damage) or spells, but you don't even need to declare it before you attack. PHB p. 198.

@@Darknight4434 it does. If you deal melee damage to an enemy that would otherwise be lethal, you can just say "I deal non-lethal damage" and they're knocked unconscious. It's not much of a system, rather a simple rule, but it's there. If you still have to fight the creature you want to know out, you can just say that it's non-lethal. Nick Williams Theirs ways to make it good even at later lvs (just gotta build your char around it). Like for example one of my chars I’m playing right now I’m a Druid cleric multiclass (3 lvs land Druid, 1 lv Arcana cleric). For Wizard cantrips I choose Booming blade and Green flame blade and for feats I’m gonna pick up Polearm master and mobile. So I can go up to an enemy cast Shillelagh (if I haven’t already) and then booming blade, smack them, and then leave without an attack of opp and that’s means if they have to move to get closer they take the extra dame from moving cause of booming blade and they also get hit again if they get close to me cause of Polearm master (Warcaster is another feat I’m gonna get so I can cast booming blade on my Polearm mastery attacks). Also my dm is allowing unearthed arcana stuff so I might go into fighter or something to get the fighting style tunnel fighter (which if u don’t know what that does it basically makes it so your attack of opp’s don’t use up your reaction).

As an Arcane Trickster, I liked the combo of Control Flames and Mage Hand. For exploration, if you don't want to sneak around in the dark, you can have the mage hand carry a torch, and you can use control flames to double the range of light produced by the torch, getting 40 feet of bright light and 40 feet of dim light. From a torch up to 30 feet away from you that can be moved 30 feet as a bonus action and leaves you with both of your hands free. If you're really into using magic and want to use a third cantrip for this exploration, you can use Minor Illusion on each of your turns to repeatedly create hiding places for yourself, such as a crate, a rock, or a bush, depending on where you're exploring. You might want to decrease the range of bright and dim light created by the torch if you're trying to use hiding places, but with Control Flames, you could choose to drop the light created by the torch to 10 feet of bright light and 10 feet of dim light. Or you could just sneak around in the dark and not use a torch at all. For ambushes, Prestidigitation has only a 10 foot range, so it's not effective for putting out fires from a distance. But with Control Flames, you can put out a fire from 60 feet away. And because you can have your Mage Hand 30 feet in front of you, and you can move it and use it with just a bonus action, you can control your Mage Hand on the same turn that you use your action to put out a fire from 60 feet away. So if you start off your turn 60 feet away from a fire, with your Mage Hand 30 feet in front of you (and invisible, because Rogues can do that with Mage Hand), you can use your action to put out the camp fire from 60 feet away, then use your movement towards the fire, and then with your bonus action, move your Mage Hand up next to the camp fire and dump out the contents of a quiver onto the ground, remove a sword from its scabbard and carry it 5 feet away, or some other thing to mess with an enemy before they even know that you're there.

1) Shillelagh is a very good Cantrip for Circle of the Spore Druids, if not outright essential. Their particular kit relies heavily on the Druid being up close and personal with the enemy, in order to use many of the subclass features. I've actually toyed with the idea of giving a Spore Druid the Polearm Master Feat, just to maximize their damage output. After they've cast Shillelagh, there's not a lot they'll be able to do with their Bonus Action, so this Feat helps leverage that for more value. (On the other hand, the Primal Savagery Cantrip can serve many of the same functions, though you don't get the extra poison damage from Spore Druid's alternate Wildshape). 2) Poison Spray becomes pretty neat if you run a Yuan-ti Pureblood, who get it for free. Make them a Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock, or even Paladin, to make use of that sweet Charisma. My preferred build would be a Warlock, so between the free Poison Spray and Eldritch Blast, both close and distant attacks are covered. Frees up other Cantrip slots for more varied tools. 3) Spare the Dying is also useful if you want to go around saving NPCs. Enemies you want to interrogate, allies you want to keep around, innocents you want to protect, or bystanders you want to establish report with (and nothing gets you in someone's good graces like saving their life). No player can be expected to burn a spell slot, healing potion, or Healer's Kit charge on a rando. So Spare the Dying makes a cheap alternative, that just keeps saving. Extra good on Grave Clerics, who get to do it at range as a Bonus Action.

If you're an evocation wizard you're probably taking war caster feat, so if you also take polearm master and use a staff, you can use a reaction (from war caster) to cast poison spray at anything that comes in melee range (polearm master), and if they save they still take half damage (evo wizard potent cantrip). At level 20, that's a free single target fireball. There's not a lot that this works with, as you're looking at single target cantrips with saving throws. Or you could just finger of death :P

Personally I really like the cantrip Mold Earth. Zee Bashew did a really good video on the ability’s of it, but it’s kind of like an earth bender’s prestidigitation and reminds me a lot of Edward Elric from the anime Full Metal Alchemist. I use it a lot with my warlock. Examples: 1) Make spikes on a wall and use Eldritch Blast with the Repelling Blast invocation to knock them into the spikes doing extra damage. 2) Quickly get to bodies buried in a grave yard to get a small zombie/skeleton army over night 3) change the shape of stone to make makeshift weapons (darts, spears, etc., but that’s up to your DM if you’re allowed to do it) 4) Minecraft dirt hut And I’m sure I’ve done other things with it that I can’t remember off the top of my head

Depending on your playstyle/character I would suggest different cantrips for the bard. Prestidigitation is a must for a face-bard. Always clean clothes, any food you serve is perfectly flavored and just a ton of utility. Throw in mend, making sure your fancy new clothes newer gets worn or has holes. Not the most useable in combat, but a bit of creativity goes a long way. (Snuffing out the lights, against a group of enemies without dark vision can change the battle field significantly more, than a single disadvantage).

You want a combat use of prestidigitation? Does your enemy use healing potions good sir? MAKE THAT POTION TASTE LIKE ROTTING PIG SWILL! Admittedly you’d have to have good prediction with holding actions, or be engaged with a predictable enemy that has a few potions. Also though it’s not combat related, you could use it to cover up the taste of poison.

CorrosiveApplesauce that's brilliant! It does require a bit of timing, but with a high ac and/or resistances enemy your action might help more if it prevents healing, rather than hitting him.

Since the description of the cantrip specifically states "Create a shower of sparks", why couldn't you use it to distract a foe, blind him for a second, at least imposing disadvantage the first time you use that trick on him?

I used prestidigitation in a tavern to have the perfect concert. Instead of snuffing out the candles and torches in the tavern, my DM allowed me to just make the fire smaller and therefore less bright, while making it bigger and therefore brighter around the stage area. Also used it as a fog machine, colored overhead lights, and echoing for my instrument. And obviously the shower of sparks for a climactic finale. I earned a lot of money that night.

I wonder if this video was made before Create Bonfire was available. I kind of like Create Bonfire as an option over Produce Flame for my Moon druid at least because it's a concentration spell, and therefore you can continue to focus on it while you're Wildshaped. If you place it in the right spot, like a bottleneck, then you might force enemies to have to walk through it to get to where you are, and if you have teammates that can force enemies into the fire, even better. It's like a little preview of Spike Growth for lower level druids, plus you can use it for flavor as a means to get campfires started. Or hell, maybe you even want to commit a little bit of arson every now and then.

As Argus said, you could go Monk 14, Paladin 6. But there's other ways to deal with a save than pure numbers- and 14 levels is a long time to wait for those numbers. A Diviner wizard can choose to make a save good or bad a few times a day for an investment of 2 levels, some races have feats related to saves or immunity to conditions... it really depends on how you want to go with things. 2 levels of Barbarian gets you advantage on strength and dex saves a lot of the time. The big problem of those cantrips is that you either use them or your multiattack - I understand it gives you choises, but it doesn't add much in my opinion. Now on an arcane trickster, who never gets mutiattack ;) Or my personal favourite - swashbuckler with magic initiate feat, since the sawashbucker can disengage for free after a melee attack, so if I'm not mistaken you can booming blade and just move away, still getting a bonus action for dash or hide etc. EDIT: I forgot about the war magic feature, which can change it up quite a bit especially if the campaign won't last that long after lvl 11, making the combo much more potent than I first thought :)

Say a player or npc goes down, there’s a chance they roll a 20 or 1 and either hop up to fight or die, you can prevent this by casting spare the dying so you can take them out of combat, while not having to worry about them dying if you don’t want them to.

Rules say this. When you reach 0 HP but don't die, you're basically fighting for your life. Anything that stabilizes you, whether it's getting all three death saving throws, someone using spare the dying, someone using a medicine check, whatever, still leaves you at 0 HP, but you're now not dying. You're unconscious. Now, if you're at 0 HP, whether you already are stabilized or are still making your death saving throws, and regain at least 1 HP, from any source, you are no longer unconscious and can stand up and keep fighting. As long as you regain HP you don't need to be woken up, or wait the ammount of hours necessary. A misconception is that when you're stable you are at 1hp. That's not true, you're still at 0. If you were to get a 20 in a death saving throw, you instantly regain 1hp and you're awake. If someone heals you, or makes you to drink a healing potion, you're awake.

I'll say what nobody wants to say for Arcane Trickster and a few specific builds: I'm a huge fan of True Strike Yes, at level 13 they get Versatile Trickster. But at low levels, the ability to just get advantage which would let sneak attack work opens up a lot of ideas: Casting it when your bard makes a persuasion check in case they fail to get advantage and sneak attack chance at the start of a fight Sorcerer quickening the cantrip and then casting a huge attack spell with their last high level spell slot The multi-class eldritch knight/paladin or hexblade warlock who just needs one more smite to take care of the bbeg Everybody says "it takes one turn to get advantage on the second so its a waste" doesn't think about the situations that it might be useful. @MegaDirtPotato
@MegaDirtPotato 5 жыл бұрын
@@mclark347 I never specified it would be used every turn, merely the fact it could be. Eldritch Knight gets their War Magic ability at level 7. Gaining the advantage is best for rogue sneak attack, paladin divine smite, or high level spellcasters, so this would be a 7-level multiclass. True strike can be taken at level 1 (or 3 with arcane trickster), and the quicken combo takes 3 levels. In addition, War Magic requires an action for a cantrip and a single weapon attack as a bonus action. This would mean you could not do it every turn, as if it requires you to use the action of casting a cantrip first. To make use of this strategy, you must attack before casting the cantrip. With quicken, you could do a lot more on the rest of your turn, such as dodge, dash, hide, or help.
@mclark347

@@MegaDirtPotato It seems like your strategy is WAY more specific than I thought and I'm missing a LOT of details about what specifically you're trying to do. But I can't really tell what your goal actually is. It seems to be the latter plus something else that I can't quite follow. Your initial post was so vague that I almost recommended War Domain.

Benniken Benniken Is that a joke? True strike sadly isn’t good like at all. It takes your whole action to get advantage on 1 attack next round and it uses up your concentration and it also doesn’t get any better (if u ask me it should be a bonus action or at least become one at later lvs). But yea your flat out better attacking on both turns since u have the same chance to hit since your rolling the same amount of dice and u also can hit twice (it gets even worse if u have extra attack). I mean the only thing I can think of is if your an Arcane Trickster and have disadvantage on attacking (which means no sneak attack) then u can cast it to cancel it out to be able to do so but even then if flanking is an option in your group of if u have a familiar who can help u then their is ways to do that don’t involve using up your whole action and don’t use up concentration. It’s objectively the worst cantrip sadly (followed by Blade Ward). Honestly both these spells should be bonus actions.

Minor Illusion is probably the most busted spell under third level in the game, and possibly higher. It lasts for 1 minute and doesn't take concentration, and we can see through our own illusions, so let's remember this. You can create an object that is no larger than a 5-foot cube. Today, we're making a cardboard box in the 5-foot cube that we are standing in. This box has slits that a person might use to grab on to it. Our Halfling Hero, who happens to be an Arcane Trickster Rogue, stands underneath it with his bow and launches volley after volley of Sneak Attacks from inside the box. The enemy cannot see him, so he is always Hidden, and always has Advantage. All enemies have Disadvantage to attack him, too. Our enemies have to use an action to examine the box to determine that it is an illusion, and they must use an Investigation check to do so. While they are doing this, Our Halfling Hero pops out, snaps their neck, and then hides in his box again. Because if you have the option to be Solid Snake, you should always choose to be Solid Snake. For D&D Flair, make it a rock instead of a cardboard box. It's a Cantrip that effectively gives you Invisibility, Advantage on all Attacks, Disadvantage to your Enemies, makes you immune to all attacks that require Line of Sight (most spells), and it literally doesn't matter if the Enemy sees you put it up. This is obviously the best choice for anyone who can take it.

Wow...that's pretty evil, and I never thought of that. I was going to dispute your tactic, based on this: "When a creature can't see you, you have advantage on attack rolls against it. If you are hidden-both unseen and unheard-when you make an attack, you give away your location when the attack hits or misses." So, once you attack, you've given away your location...funny thing, your opponent still can't see you, so technically you do still get advantage. As a DM, I'm hoping none of my players ever figures this one out. :P
